Clarke Schmidt scattered 5 singles and 2 walks, to pitch shutout ball past his nemesis the 6th inning and into the 7th inning, and Anthony Rizzo provided all the offense in the Yankee 2-0 win in Tampa on a Friday night.
Rizzo drove in a run with an RBI single in the 4th and added an insurance HR in the 9th. Meanwhile Jose Trevino helped Schmidt by throwing out 3 runners on the basepaths in the razor-tight game.
And Clay Holmes finished it with a heart-attack save — loading the bases with 2 outs in the 9th before getting a strikeout to end it.
“Aggressive with them; (had them) going after a lot of 1st pitches; a lot of quick outs,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “He dealt with some stress all night too. They put some guys on base against him. But I thought he was really good — slider/sweeper was really good. The cutter — he had a little bit of everything going tonite. Really, really sharp performance. Made a couple big pitches when he really needed to in a 1-0 game. Just a really good start by Clarke.”
NY improves to 26-14 and pull to within a half game of 1st place Baltimore. Tampa falls to 19-20.
1. Schmidt Shutout Into 7th
Clarke Schmidt had good stuff but was not perfect — allowing a single in every inning but the 2nd. He was helped by Jose Trevino and his arm.
Schmidt:
- Allowed a leadoff single in the 1st but got the next 3 batters,
- Pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd,
- Allowed a leadoff single to Caballero in the 3rd inning — but Caballero, after stealing 2nd (on a good throw by Trevi that just missed getting him), was gunned out at 3rd by Trevi.
- Allowed a 1-out single in the 3rd but got a double play to end the inning.
- Allowed a 2-out single in the 5th, then walked a batter — but got a big strikeout of Jackson to end the inning.
- Allowed a leadoff single in the 6th, but then picked Randy Arozarena off 1st.
- Allowed a leadoff walk in the 7th, but then got a strike out and line out and left with a 1-0 lead, 2 outs, and a runner on 1st.

2. Rizzo RBI Single Puts NY Up 1-0 in 4th
Rookie righthander Taj Bradley matched Schmidt — pitching 6 innings and allowing only 1 run on 4 hits. The Yanks got that run in the top of the 4th — that run came after Aaron Judge worked a 1-out walk, Giancarlo Stanton got a 2-out single, and Anthony Rizzo singled Judge home.

3. Trevino Throws Out 2 Runners
Nick Burdi relieved Schmidt with 2 outs and a runner on 1st in the 7th, and Jose Trevino helped Schmidt one more time by throwing out Paredes trying to steal 2nd to end the inning — keeping it NY 1 Tampa 0.
4. Weaver Great
Luke Weaver came in for the 8th and was great again — a 1-2-3 inning — strikeout, flyout, strikeout.
5. Rizzo Insurance HR in 9th
Anthony Rizzo led off the 9th with a 392-foot homer to center for a huge insurance run. NY 2 Tampa 0.

6. Holmes with the Heart-Attack Save
And then in came Clay Holmes who has been brilliant this year so far — pitching to a 0.00 ERA.
While most of NY was watching the Knick game — another intense barnburner, the 3rd game in their 7-game series with Indiana — Holmes threw down a walk, strikeout, walk, strikeout, single to load the bases, strikeout inning for the old ballgame.
