Tommy Kahnle couldn’t get the final out of the 7th inning, allowing consecutive shots to right that went over Juan Soto‘s head — the first with bases loaded and 2 outs, the next one driving in another run — and before the inning was over a 7-7 tie turned into a 12-7 St Louis lead and that was the ballgame.
Kahnle was in to relieve Jake Cousins, who induced a 1-out double play ball that would have ended the inning but it bounced off his glove and went for a single.
On a Sunday that started with grey skies and Massive thunderstorms which landed in the 4th inning, and ended as a beautiful, 75-degree Sunny afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
The Yanks had battled back from a 7-2 deficit in the 5th to tie the game with 3 runs in the 5th and 2 runs in the 6th. Nestor Cortes allowed 5 runs in 4 innings, 4 of them in that pouring rain in the 4th.
“One of those games,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Tommy’s been so good; Cousins has been so good; no issue going right back to those guys knowing how important they’ve been to our bullpen.”
NY falls to 79-58, and their AL East lead over Baltimore drops to .5 game. St. Louis improves to 69-68.
1. Giancarlo Bomb Ties It; Chisholm Speed Puts Yanks Up
The Cardinals started 36-year-old, 6’4 righty Miles Mikolas, and Giancarlo Stanton got to him in the bottom of the 2nd with a 387-foot homer to left that tied the game 1-1 after Nestor Cortes had allowed a run in the top of the 2nd.

Jazz Chisholm Jr., up next, hit a grounds-rule double, then stole 3rd and scored when Mikolas threw the ball away.

2. Cortes So So & Hurt by Rain
Nestor Cortes did not have the sharp stuff he’s had in his last few starts.
He allowed a leadoff double to Brendan Donovan in the 2nd, then a single to Jordan Walker for a 1-0 St Louis lead.
Staked to a 2-1 lead, Cortes pitched a shutout 3rd, but ran into trouble in the 4th, as the skies turned DARK and a thunderstorm started raging down. Cortes allowed leadoff singles to Donovan and Walker to start the inning — the single to Walker skipping under Anthony Volpe’s glove on the wet grass.
Cortes then struck out Nootbaar and Victor Scott II .

But with 2 outs, Masyn Winn hit tge ball off the end of his bat for a double and 2 runs, and then Luken Baker hit a 2-run homer to left and it was 5-2 St Louis. Cortes finally got a lineout to end the inning but the damage was done.
“The fastball profile was alright,” said Boone about Cortes. “He wasn’t getting the swing and miss he’s been getting. He had some tough breaks — a couple of soft contacts — that ball that skipped through the hole; Winn hits the ball off the end of the bat and it bounces around. The ball didn’t bounce his way; but maybe not quite as sharp; didn’t have the swing and miss he’s had in the last several.”
3. Effross Coughs Up HR to Make It 7-2
Scott Effross is back — and he pitched for the first time this season in the 5th. He is rusty. Effross allowed a leadoff single, then got a double play — started by a terrific play on the wet grass by Volpe.

But Effross then allowed another single and a 2-run homer to Jordan Walker and it was 7-2 St Louis.
4. Rizzo Helps Comeback
Down 7-2, the Yanks started coming back. Jazz Chisholm Jr.led off the bottom of the 5th with a single, and Anthony Rizzo hit a booming double to left, scoring Chisholm to make it 7-3.

The Cardinals brought in John King. With runners on 1st and 2nd and still nobody out, Juan Soto hit into a double play. Aaron Judge was intentionally walked to put runners on 1st and 3rd, but Austin Wells grounded out to end the inning.
5. Mayza Good
Tim Mayza pitched a shutout 6th, helped by a another tremendous play on the wet grass by Volpe.

6. Yanks Tie It 7-7 in 6th
And the Yankees kept coming. They were in the air and everywhere.
Giancarlo Stanton led off the 6th with a walk against John King, and after Chisholm hit into a fielders’ choice, Rizzo singled.
Riley O’Brien came in and Anthony Volpe met him with an RBI single. St Louis 7 NY 6.

Alex Verdugo then singled to load the bases, and Gleyber Torres hit a SHOT to right center that centerfielder Victor Scott II made a tremendous catch on. It went for a sac fly and 7-7 tie.

The Yanks were ‘this close’ to breaking the game open in their direction. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Juan Soto flied out to end the inning.
7. Kahnle Can’t Get Final Out of 7th
Jake Cousins came in for the 7th in a newly tied game at 7-7.
Cousins walked Nolan Arenado to start the inning but then struck out Paul Goldschmidt. Ivan Hererra hit a comebacker that could have been a double play but ricochet off Cousins’ hand for a single.
Boone brought in Kahnle, who got a line out to left but then allowed a single to Walker to load the bases with 2 outs.
Kahnle went 2-2 on Lars Nootbar, who fouled a pitch off then ripped a shot over Soto’s head in right for a bases-clearing double. St Louis 10 NY 7.
It looked like the sun got in Soto’s eyes but afterwards Soto said he saw it all the way it was the wind that took it. The wind had been swirling all day, which ushered in and out the thunderstorms.
Kahnle then allowed a double over Soto’s head again to the next batter Scott II, and it was 11-7 St Loo.
Paul Bickford came in and allowed a bunt single, and another run came in on a throwing error by Bickford and it was 12-7 St Louis.
“I didn’t have my A plus stuff tonite,” said Kahnle afterwards. “Just kind of got behind a couple of counts; they adjusted and took advantage.” When asked what wasn’t good, Kahnle said “The changeup — I left it over the plate a couple of times; a couple of heaters were hit pretty hard. Overall not a great outing.”
8. Marinaccio Allows 2-Run HR to Make It 14-7
Ron Marinaccio — recalled from AAA earlier in the day — pitched the 9th in a 12-7 game. He allowed a single to Walker and then a 2-run homer to Nootbaar to make it 14-7, before retiring the next 3 batters.
The good news is that the Yankees never mounted any offense after tying the game 7-7, so maybe they would have lost anyway if they had only allowed 1 additional run.
Stanton hit a 2-out double in the bottom of the 7th, followed by a Jazz Chisholm walk — but Rizzo struck out to end the threat, and the last 6 Yankees were retired in order for the old ballgame.
