Gil Great. Judge & Chisholm 2 HR’s Each. NY 14 Philadelphia 4

Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ben Rice each hit solo Homers in the first 2 innings against Philly ace Zack Wheeler to put NY up 3-0 — and Luis Gil, pitching with that early cushion was great — pitching into the 6th and leaving with a 7-3 lead.

The Bronx Bombers kept bombing away on Wheeler — Juan Soto with a 2-RBI double in the 5th, Austin Wells following him with a 2-RBI triple in the same inning — and then bombed the Philly bullpen too: Aaron Judge hitting a 2nd homer in the 7th to make it 9-3, Anthony Volpe hitting a 2-run homer in the 8th to make it 11-4, and Jazz Chisholm finishing the scoring with his 2nd homer in the 9th — using Aaron Judge‘s bat as a lark, since Philly had catcher Garrett Stubbs pitching.

“You know that here you’re playing against a great team, but it’s also another just great environment too,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “You feel that little added energy you get in certain games — and for Aaron to set the tone with the long ball in the 1st, was great — and I thought Luis Gil went out there and was excellent too, and took it from there — and the guys obviously had a pretty big, special night offensively.”

NY improves to 63-45 and pull a half a game behind Baltimore which split a doubleheader vs Toronto. Philly falls to 65-41, in 1st in their division.

1. Yank HR’s Rip Wheeler Early

Zack Wheeler came in with a 10-4 2.55 and is one of the best pitchers in baseball — but Aaron Judge got to him in the top of the 1st with a bomb to left and it was 1-0 Yankees.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. got to Wheeler in the top of the 2nd with a homer to left for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

A batter later, Ben Rice joined the Bomber party with a homer to right and it was 3-0 NY.

2. Gil Great

Gil took it from there — pitching commanding ball into the 6th.

Gil showed off an improved, nasty curveball after Luis Severino gave him some tips on it when the Mets played the Yankees last week.

“The last start against us, the breaking pitches weren’t that good,” said Severino as quoted by Bryan Hoch. “I gave him some tips. The one that I’m throwing now has been really good. He went to the bullpen, he tried, and he told me that after that it’s been unbelievable. So I’m really happy for him.”

Gil allowed a walk leading off the 6th, struck out Bryce Harper, but then allowed 2 singles — the second one by Marsh plating a run to make it 7-3. Gil was relieved by Michael Tonkin who came in and got Realmuto to hit into a double play on one pitch to end the inning.

Gil cruised through the first 2 innings, then got into and out of trouble in the 3rd — 2 leadoff singles and a 1-out walk loaded the bases, a groundout scored a run, but Gil got Bryce Harper to fly out for the final out.

Gil allowed a solo Homer to Brandon Marsh in the 4th to make it a 3-2 game — but the Yanks got him back runs and by the bottom of the 5th Gil was pitching with a 7-2 lead, and he pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

3. Soto & Wells Make It 7-2 in 5th

The Yanks got Gil more runs in the top of the 5th off Wheeler — Ben Rice and Anthony Volpe with consecutive 1-out singles, Alex Verdugo walked to load the bases, and Juan Soto in a tough 8-pitch at bat, ripped an 83-MPH curveball that didn’t curve into right for a 2-RBI double. NY 5 Philly 2.

Wheeler struck out Judge, and went 0-2 on Austin Wells, but Wells took a ball, fouled off a pitch, then hit a triple to right, clearing the bases for a 7-2 Yankee lead.

4. Tonkin Gets Big DP to End 6th

Tonkin then had a little trouble in the 7th — a 1-out single and 2-out walk, and 2 wild pitches plated a run to make it 9-4 and put runners on the corners. But Tonkin got Turner to ground out to end the threat.

5. Judge 2-Run HR Makes It 9-3 in 7th

Juan Soto had a 1-out single off Marte in the top of the 7th, and Aaron Judge followed with his second homer of the night, to left for a 9-3 Yankee lead.

6. Volpe HR, Soto RBI Double Make It Laugher in 8th

Anthony Volpe joined the Bomber club in the 8th with a 2-run homer, with Gleyber Torres aboard who had walked.

And then Alex Verdugo singled, and Juan Soto doubled him home for a 12-4 Yankee lead.

7. Chisholm Hits 2nd HR with Judge’s Bat

Catcher Garrett Stubbs pitched the 9th — Giancarlo Stanton walked and Jazz Chisholm picked up Aaron Judge’s bat and hit a homer to left for a 14-4 game.

When asked afterwards if he would use Judge’s bat again, Chisholm said “Definitely not going to use that again tomorrow — it was so heavy!!”

8. Gomez Finishes

Yoendrys Gomez pitched the final 2 innings for the Yanks — shutout ball — for the old ballgame.

Etcetera

  • Giancarlo Stanton was back in the lineup after being out over a month with a pulled hamstring, and he batted 5th with Austin Wells 4th. Stanton had some good swings and worked a walk, and scored a run.
  • Chisholm played 3rd and showed cat-like quickness in knocking down a line drive by Alec Bohm in the 6th — preventing a double, limiting it to a single.
