ENYEL DE LOS SANTOS. And 16 Left on Base. Chisox 12 NY 2

Enyel De Los Santos allowed 6 runs on 6 hits to the first 6 batters he faced in the 7th inning, turning a 5-2 game into a rout, and then allowed 2 more hits and a run the next inning as the White Sox pummeled the Yankees 12-2 on a Monday night in Chicago.

The Yankee batters got at least one baserunner, and often 2 or even 3 in every inning — but went 2-18 with runners in scoring position, and left 16 men on base.

The White Sox entered as not only the worst team in baseball by far at 28-91, but a team making the history book as one of the worst teams of all time — having just lost 21 in a row, winning a game, then losing 3 more straight heading into this one. The Yankees entered tied with Baltimore for the most wins in baseball with a record of 70-49.

“That’s baseball, Suzyn.”

De Los Santos of course was one of 2 relievers that GM Brian Cashman picked up at the trade deadline, which caused a slew of derogatory comments on Yankee Twitter. The other reliever acquired, Mark Leiter Jr. got bombed the game before.

Meanwhile, Luis Gil started and ok but not his dominant self — his fastball was not crackling; he lasted 4 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs to take the loss.

“He had a hard time putting guys away,” said Boone about De Los Santos. “Seems like he got to 2 strikes a lot even; but they were obviously seeing him well — they got a lot of good swings off of him. I felt like their first several runs, with Luis and with Tim Hill — who I thought threw really well — I thought we were a little unfortunate with some balls that fell in that set them up in some innings. But they got a lot of good swings off of (De Los Santos).”

NY drops to 70-50. Chicago improves to 29-91.

1. Yanks Jump on Top

Just like seemingly in every game lately, the Yankees scored a run in the 1st inning to jump on top.

Alex Verdugo and Juan Soto worked walks to lead off against 6’6 rookie lefty Ky Bush. Aaron Judge hit an RBI double to left and NY was up 1-0 with 2 on and nobody out.

This looked like it would be a rout. But the next 3 batters — Giancarlo Stanton, Austin Wells, and Gleyber Torres — popped out, leaving the runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd.

2. Gil OK But Not Great

Meanwhile Luis Gil did not look as dominant from the start — allowing a walk and two RBI doubles in the bottom of the 1st — one to Andrew Benintendi and the other to Gavin Sheets — and it was 2-1 Chicago.

Gil retired the side 1-2-3 in the 2nd, with 2 strikeouts — and pitched a shutout 3rd, allowing just a 2-out single, but allowed a leadoff homer to Korey Lee in the 4th to make it 3-1.

After Lee’s homer, Gil allowed a double, but then got 2 outs, and just when he looked like he would get out of it — allowed a 2-out single by Nicky Lopez to make it 4-1 Chicago.

Gil left after 4 innings as he was at 98 pitches. His line: 4 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 K’s, 2 walks. He loses to go 12-6 3.25.

3. Yanks SQUANDER Opportunities

Meanwhile the Yankees continued to put baserunners on against the rookie Bush, and continued to squander opportunities.

  • In the 2nd, Jazz Chisholm Jr.led off with a single and Anthony Volpe walked behind him; they moved to 2nd and 3rd on a fly out by DJ LeMahieu — and Alex Verdugo walked to load the bases with 1 out. But Juan Soto popped out and Aaron Judge flied out to leave bases loaded.
  • In the 3rd, Giancarlo Stanton led off with a single, and Gleyber Torres got a 1-out single — but Chisholm grounded into a double play to end the inning.
  • In the 4th, Anthony Volpe and LeMahieu got walks to lead off the inning — but Alex Verdugo popped up a bunt attempt, Soto grounded out to move the runners, Aaron Judge was intentionally walked to load the bases — and Giancarlo Stanton struck out.

4. Volpe Knocks in Run to Make It 4-2 in 5th

Finally in the 5th the Yanks got another run — Jazz Chisholm Jr.getting a 2-out single, stealing 2nd, and scoring on an infield single to deep short by Anthony Volpe — Chisholm aggressive on the bases. Chisox 4 NY 2.

5. Hill Bad to Good

Tim Hill came in to pitch the bottom of the 5th, and allowed consecutive singles and an RBI double (to Gavin Sheets) to start the inning.

But with 2nd and 3rd, nobody out, Hill got tough — getting 3 straight infield grounders — to 1st base, holding the runners, to shortstop — Volpe gunning the runner out at home, and back to Hill the pitcher for the final out.

Hill then pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 6th, with 2 more groundouts.

Hill also got the 1st batter of the 7th, on a groundout.

6. De Los Santos Gets WRACKED

And then Enyel De Los Santos entered the game.

Double (by Andrew Vaughn), RBI Double (by Gavin Sheets), Single, RBI Single (by Dominic Fletcher), RBI Single (by Corey Julks), 3-run Homerun (by Brooks Baldwin). Chicago 11 NY 2.

Finally De Los Santos got the final 2 outs.

But in the 8th, De Los Santos allowed a double (to Vaughn) and an RBI single (to Sheets) to make it 12-2.

7. Yanks Squander More Opportunities

The Yanks weren’t finished squandering opportunites:

  • In the 6th, Juan Soto got on with a 1-out walk, went to 2nd on a pickoff error, but was stranded there.
  • In the 7th, NY down 5-2, Austin Wells led off with a single, but was stranded there.
  • In the 8th, down 11-2, LeMahieu led off with a single, but was erased on a double play. Juan Soto then walked, Judge beat out an infield single to put 2 on — but Stanton struck out.
  • In the 9th, the Yanks got leadoff walks by Austin Wells and Gleyber Torres, but lineout, strikeout, groundout followed for the old ballgame.

Etcetera

Many Yankee fans missed listening to the game, as the Elon Musk-Donald Trump chat was going on at the same time on Twitter.
