What a beautiful afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Sunny, temperature in low 70’s, and Gerrit Cole and the Yankee pen throwing a 1-hit shutout against Cleveland, with Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton providing Homers in a 6-0 win.
Judge had a homer in the 4th to put NY up 1-0, and then in the 5th Austin Wells had a big sac fly to make it 2-0, and Stanton blew it open with a 3-run bomb.
It was more than enough offense for the Yankee pitchers — Gerrit Cole leading the charge with 6 innings of 1-hit shutout ball to gain his 150th career win, and Tim Hill, Luke Weaver, and Michael Tonkin following with 3 no-hit, shutout innings.
“After that 1st day in Chicago, I feel we’ve really thrown the ball well as a group,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “A couple of tough losses in there, around us throwing the ball well. But today was more of that — all 4 guys today really in control, and a good series win for us today.”
NY wins 2 of 3 to take the series, and improves to 75-53, moving to 1.5 games ahead of Baltimore after their loss in the evening. It is NY’s biggest lead in 1st place since June 25th. Cleveland falls to 73-54. The Yanks have the best record in the American League, and are 1 game behind the Dodgers for best record in baseball.
1. Cole Grinds Through 6 Innings of 1-Hit Ball
Gerrit Cole had some trouble with control — walking 5 batters — but only allowed 1 hit in 6 shutout innings. That hit came to the first hitter of the game — Steven Kwan. After that Cole pitched a no-hitter for the next 6 innings.
Cole walked 1 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 3rd (both after 2 outs), but threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th.
By the bottom of the 6th Cole was up 5-0, and walked 2 after 1 was out — then got a double play to end the inning.

“Just got to be a little crafty at times,” said Cole when asked how he was able to grind through 6 shutout innings despite walking so many. “But we played great defense all day which helped, Wells was outstanding which helped, the offense putting together great at bats and wearing them down, and ultimately Big G with the big strike — it’s all part of it.”
Cole improves to 5-2 3.72.
2. Judge HR #48 Puts NY Up 1-0 in 4th
Cleveland starter Gavin Williams, a 25-year-old 6’6 righty, has a high-octane 99 MPH fastball and good off speed pitches. He shut the Yanks out through the first 3 innings.

But in the 4th Aaron Judge got to Williams with a opposite-field, 360-foot homer to right. It was Judge’s 48th homer, putting him on a pace for 61 homers. “He’s playing a video game, all the rest of us are out here grinding,” said Giancarlo Stanton about Judge.

3. Wells Sac Fly & Giancarlo BOMB Put NY Up 5-0
In the 5th, the Yanks knocked Williams from the game. Ben Rice and Gleyber Torres worked walks to start the inning, and Juan Soto grounded out for a force at 2nd. With runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out, Williams intentionally walked Aaron Judge to load the bases.
But Austin Wells — the Yankees’ cleanup hitter — came through as usual by tipping a shot to opposite field left center that had double written all over it — it was caught by a splendid play by centerfielder Tyler Freeman but went for a sac fly and 2-0 Yankee lead.

And then Giancarlo Stanton put the game away with a 417-foot, 3-run BOMB to center. NY 5 Cleveland 0.

4. Volpe & Rice Add Insurance
NY added an insurance run in the top of the 8th — Anthony Volpe doubled with 1 out, Oswaldo Cabrera walked, Volpe stole 3rd, and then scored when Ben Rice hit a clutch sac fly to center. NY 6 Cleveland 0.

5. Hill, Weaver, Tonkin Terrific
Lefty Tim Hill relieved Cole and pitched a shutout 7th, then got the 1st out of the 8th before being relieved by Luke Weaver who got the final 2 outs.

And more good news — Michael Tonkin — who got Ripped in his prior appearance on Tuesday night — came in for the 9th and threw down a perfect 1-2-3 inning, striking out 2, for the old ballgame.
