Bronx Bombers BOMB A’s. NY 10 Oakland 0

Carlos Rodon pitched 6 shutout innings, and the Bronx Bombers bombed away all night in cruising to a 10-0 win over the A’s on a Saturday night in Oakland.

The Yanks jumped on top with 2 runs in the top of the 1st highlighted by an RBI single by The Martian Jasson Dominguez, made it 3-0 in the 2nd on an Anthony Volpe homer, made it 6-0 in the 3rd on a 3-run BLAST by Giancarlo Stanton that seemed to end the game right there, and scored 4 more in the 7th highlighted by an Aaron Judge homer.

Baltimore lost earlier in the evening so NY improved its lead in the AL East to 5 games with 7 games to play.

“Some good at bats early in that 1st inning — a big 2-out, 2-strike hit by Dominguez to get us that 2nd run,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Just kept the pressure on — then Big G took the air out of the building with one of his Big G shots, and Rodo took it from there — was really solid through 6 innings. A lot of good at bats; kept the pressure on all night; just another well-pitched game too.”

NY is now 91-64; Oakland is now 67-88.

1. Rodon 6 Shutout Innings

Carlos Rodon threw down — again — to raise his record to 16-9 3.98. He started off the season on a roll, went through a slump in July that was part of why the Yankee team slumped, and has now been back firing on all cylinders the last month and a half.

Rodon threw 6 innings of 5-hit, shutout baseball, striking out 4 and walking 1.

On Twitter his wife Ashley, who is pretty vocal on Twitter and has been behind him all along, tweeted this:

“Offensively we showed up again,” said Carlos Rodon afterwards. “It seems like it’s pretty common when I’m pitching — so it’s nice to have a good lead and go out and attack the hitters and try to get some quick outs. I thought Trevi was great behind the plate. I thought defensively we played spectacular; really clean, so it made it easy to get some early outs. I was just trying to put up zeros and it worked out.”

Rodon added that when given a big lead, “We’re going to feature a lot more fastballs, be in the zone, try to get outs.”

2. The Martian Puts NY Up 2-0 in 1st

The Yanks were facing old friend JP Sears, who was part of the package they traded to Oakland for Frankie Montas 2 years ago. Montas didn’t work out in NY and Sears has become a dependable lefty starter — 11-11 4.24 coming into this game.

But the Yanks pounced from the beginning — Gleyber Torres leading off the game with a single, Juan Soto singling to center, and Aaron Judge working a walk to load the bases with nobody out.

Giancarlo Stanton grounded into a double play to score a run and it was 1-0 NY. Sears went 0-2 on Jasson Dominguez, who fouled off 2 pitches then ripped a single to left for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

3. Volpe HR Makes It 3-0 in 2nd

Anthony Volpe led off the top of the 2nd with a 421-foot Blast to left center and NY was up 3-0.

4. Giancarlo “Takes Air Out of Building”

Juan Soto and Aaron Judge led off the top of the 3rd with back-to-back singles, bringing up Giancarlo Stanton. This time — no double play; instead a 3-Run 441-foot BLAST to left that “took the air out of the building” and seemingly ended the game — NY 6 Oakland 0.

5. Judge HR Makes It 7-0 in 7th

NY would next score in the 7th — Aaron Judge leading off against reliever Brandon Bielak with a 425-foot homer to center for a 7-0 NY lead.

The Yanks continued to pour it on: Giancarlo Stanton and Jasson Dominguez worked walks, and moved to 2nd and 3rd on a fielder’s choice groundout. An Anthony Volpe groundout scored Giancarlo to make it 8-0.

Oswaldo Cabrera and Jose Trevino then worked walks to load the bases, and Gleyber Torres knocked in 2 more runs with a single to right.

6. Leiter & Mayza Finish Up

More good news: Mark Leiter Jr.— who has been horrible since being traded for at the trade deadline — pitched 2 shutout 1-2-3 innings: strikeout-groundout-strikeout and groundout-flyout-strikeout.

Tim Mayza pitched the 9th — also a 1-2-3 inning — fly out, ground out, strikeout for the old ballgame.
