Finally a Win! Volpe, Calhoun HR’s Key Comeback. NY 4 Cleveland 2

The Yankees finally won one!

NY had lost 7 of 9 coming in, to drop them to 15-15 in last place in the AL East. And in this one, Even the Yanks’ ace Gerrit Cole wasn’t turning the tide. While the Knicks were in a dogfight in their important Game 2 of their series against Miami, Tanner Bibee was shutting the Yankees out into the 5th — Cleveland had a 2-0 lead.

But then — the Yanks started a comeback with Anthony Volpe hitting a HR in the 6th, Anthony Rizzo singling in a run later in the 6th, and Willie Calhoun homering in the 7th to put the Yanks up 3-2. NY added an insurance run in the 8th on an RBI single by DJ LeMahieu and the bullpen of Ron Marinaccio, Wandy Peralta, and Michael King (closing) did it’s job. All while the Knicks were launching their own comeback in the 4th quarter to beat the Heat. A great night for Yankee and Knick fans.

“We’re fired up; I’m fired up,” said Gerrit Cole afterwards about the Volpe HR that woke up the Yankee offense. “We’re now tied for career homers. That will last for all about a month; he’s a good player. It was a good jolt for us and it was good for Willie to finish it off; he’s been grinding up there — put a great swing on a really competitive curveball with 2 strikes. And DJ adding a little insurance. It was a good offensive grind for us.”

NY improves to 16-15. Cleveland falls to 14-16. The Yanks are still in last, 8.5 behind Tampa.
