Even More German Engineering. Reasons Why NY 2 Texas 0 on 5-20-21

Domingo German pitched 7 shutout innings to lead NY to a 2-0 victory in Texas. It was yet another great start for German, who is becoming a living example of the importance of the statistic called the Win.

German pitches great ball deep into games, mowing through lineups 3 times, often leaving in the 7th or later. And that is how he was 18-4 in 2019, and is now 4-2 3.05 this year. The Yankees have won six straight games where Domingo German has started, after he lost his first two starts and was sent down to the alternate site. At the end of Spring training, an unnamed scout said German had the 2nd best stuff on the Yankee staff in Spring training, behind Gerrit Cole.

The Yankees got their runs in the top of the 7th, on a pinch-hit single by Gio Urshela, and a pinch-hit single by Aaron Judge, for the 2-0 victory.

“The old win the game 2-0 with two pinch-hit singles trick” — Get Smart.

Details:

1. German Out Duels Dunning

“It’s kind of tough following up a no hitter, after Corey Kluber and what he did,” said Aaron Judge afterwards. “But Domingo was right there. 7 shutout innings and throwing it over to our bullpen was pretty impressive. All his pitches were working today; that changeup was nasty; he commanded both sides; even some good two-seamers in to righties; just all around a great showing by him.”

German’s final line: 7 innings, 6 hits, 5 strikeouts, no walks. He pitched to easy contact, getting some big double plays when they were needed.

German also got some help from good defense, such as a great play in the 5th by DJ LeMahieu at 3rd, turning a line drive down the line that would’ve been a hit and probable RBI, into an out.

The game was a pitchers duel — Dane Dunning, a 26-yr-old, 6’4 righty for Texas, shut the Yankees out for 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, striking out 6.

Dunning is now 2-3 3.74. He is one of the best pitching prospects in the Rangers organization, but missed all of 2019 recovering from Tommy John surgery. He was 2-0 3.97 last year. Texas acquired Dunning along with lefty Avery Weems from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Lance Lynn. Dunning was originally the 29th overall pick by Washington out of the University of Florida in 2016. Scouting reports say he has an above average sinker, and ability to throw 5 pitches and manipulate the ball.

2. The Runs

In the top of the 7th, John King relieved Dunning, and hit the first batter, Rougned Odor, with a pitch. Gleyber Torres grounded out, but Gary Sanchez singled Odor to 3rd.

Gio Urshela pinch hit for Mike Ford and singled to right scoring Odor with the game winner.

After Miguel Andujar struck out, Aaron Judge pinch hit for Tyler Wade and hit a 2-0 pitch up  the middle for a single and 2-0 game.

3. The Bullpen

Chad Green pitched a shutout 8th, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a shutout 9th. Chapman walked a batter so the tying run was at the plate when he got the last 2 outs: a line drive to center and a strike out of homerun hitter Khris Davis on a 102 MPH fastball down the middle for the old ballgame.
