Bomboclaat: Rays Sweep Yanks Out of 1st; Paxton MRI. Tampa 10 NY 5 — Aug 20, 2020

Tampa swept the Yanks in the 3-game set, crushing them in this final game, to launch ahead of the Yanks in the standings and into 1st place with a 17-9 record to the Yankees now 16-9 record. As the Jamaicans might say — Bomboclaat.

Worse yet — James Paxton it was reported after the game, is going for an MRI after having discomfort in the area of his forearm and elbow, and Gleyber Torres is going to the Injured List with a pulled hamstring, which he injured stumbling while running to first on a groundout in the 3rd.

Bomboclaat

Bomboclaat is a Jamaican term whose literal meaning is “Under pad” — referring to a woman’s hygiene product but used to express shock at a bad situation. The word has taken on a new meaning on Twitter in the last year — meaning “Caption This.” The caption for Yankee fans this morning is Bomboclaat, the original meaning.

Was Looking Good for Yanks

This one was looking good for the Yanks (as the previous game had with Gerrit Cole on the mound). James Paxton was on his game — he had a no hitter going into the 5th and the Yankees had a 2-0 lead. Then 3 Tampa runs fell from the sky in the 5th, on one hit — 2 walks, a double, and a sac fly — and just like that Tampa was up 3-2. The Yanks drew back on top 4-3 on a Gio Urshela 2-run bomb — NY up 4-3 and Tampa only 1 hit heading to the 6th inning.

Sky Falls

But then the sky fell in — Tampa with 5 runs in the 6th off Adam Ottavino and Luis Avilan. It was 8-4 and ballgame.

Luke Voit got back a run with an RBI single in the 6th to make it 8-5 but the vaunted Tampa bullpen shut the Yanks out the last 3 innings — Jalen Beeks, Aaron Slegers, and Aaron Loop — and Tampa tacked on 2 runs in the 9th on a 2-run bomb by 3rd baseman Yandy Diaz for the utter dismantling of the Yanks.

Voit, to Detroit

Luke Voit had gotten the Yanks their first run with a homer in the 1st — making 5 straight hits that were homers for him.

Etcetera

The Yanks are of course without DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton — all out injured. Still — they look like they are in for a challenge this year with the talented, young Tampa team.
