Aaron Judge = MVP MVP MVP — NY 9 Boston 7 — Aug 2, 2020

Aaron Judge hit a homerun in his 5th straight game in the 2nd inning — a 3-run blast — and then hit a 2-run game-winning homerun to left in the 8th to launch the Yanks to a come-from-behind 9-7 victory on a beautiful, warm, breezy Sunday night at Yankee Stadium (with no fans in attendance).

The Yanks were trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the 8th — when with 2 out, Mike Tauchman drew a walk, stole second, and DJ LeMahieu singled to tie the game. Then Judge came up and hit the 2-run bomb to put the Yanks ahead.

Paxton Velocity Issues

James Paxton got ripped early — 2 runs in the 1st — but Judge’s 3-run homer in the 2nd put him back on top 3-2. Paxton got ripped some more in the 3rd and he was gone, down 5-3. Paxton’s velocity was noticed by many to be down; the hope is he is still recovering from the back surgery he had in the off season, and will return to form as he gets back in form.

Back and Forth with Bombs

The Yanks jumped right back and tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd, 5-5 off back-to-back RBI doubles by Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela. Mike King pitched pretty well — 3.2 innings, 2 runs — but ended up down 6-5 when Xander Bogaerts hit a homer in the 5th — and then after Luke Voit tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the 5th with a home run — King allowed a homer to Rafael Devers in the 7th and the Yanks were down 7-6.

That set up the 8th inning heroics by LeMahieu and Judge.

Adam Ottavino and Zack Britton closed it out for the Yanks. (Tommy Kahnle is out for the year with Tommy John surgery, it was announced during the prior game.)

Red Sox Pitching Not What It Used to Be

The Red Sox threw a bullpen day at the Yanks — reliever Austin Brice starting. The Red Sox starting staff has Imploded this year. They traded David Price to Dodgers (unloading the last few years of his massive contract), Rick Porcello signed with the Mets as free agent, Chris Sale (who had a bad year last year) had Tommy John surgery in April and is out for year, and Eduardo Rodriguez developed a heart issue (which they are blaming on coronavirus) and is out for year. That leaves former-Yank Nathan Eovaldi and pray for rain (and lots of bullpen days).

Yanks Off to Giddy Start

The Yanks are now a giddy 7-1 to start the season and Aaron Judge is the leading candidate for MVP — say the fans at home and Alex Rodriguez on TV (National Game).

After the game, Judge said he wasn’t locked in yet..
