Luis Severino was the story in this game – super important for the Yankee playoff hopes. He was Brilliant with a capital B – 6 very strong shutout innings to beat the Blue Jays and get his 1st win of the season. He threw 80 pitches, striking out 9 in 5 innings, allowing 3 hits to get his first win. He has now pitched 10 innings, no runs, 0.00 ERA on the season.

With best record in the league possibly out of reach (the Yanks are essentially 1.5 behind Houston with 5 games to go), but with a solid ‘virtual’ 2.5 game lead over the Dodgers (or any NL team, since they own the tiebreaker with LA) should they get to the World Series, all that is left now is to get guys ready for the playoffs – rested and hopefully in rhythm.
Aaron Judge looks in rhythm – another 1st inning home run in this game – he went 2 for 4 with a walk. Brett Gardner the centerfielder is in rhythm; he followed Judge with a 3-run homer in the 1st inning with Giancarlo Stanton and Luke Voit on base to make it 4-0 NY.

DJ LeMahieu is in rhythm – 2 for 4 with 2 walks and a 2-run homer in the 2nd to make it a 6-0 and the old ballgame. He raised his average a point to .329. Tim Anderson of Chicago went 1 for 4 and is at .335. That is the other sub story to the end of the season – with 5 games left LeMahieu is going to have to do something special like a 4-hit game followed by a 3-hit game to raise his average up to .334 and hope Anderson drops down.
It would be nice to see Gio Urshela start hitting – he’s in a mini slump that has dropped his average to .316 after going hitless in this game. And ps we’re still waiting for Gary Sanchez to be brought back from the groin injury; Austin Romine played in this one and went 1 for 3.
Etcetera
With an 8-0 lead, manager Aaron Boone brought in relievers who do not figure to make the post-season roster – Stephen Tarpley, Tyler Lyons, and – unfortunately – Nestor Cortes Jr.because he has not been sharp lately. Cortes pitched 2 innings and allowed a run. Tarpley – who made the post-season roster last year but is not good enough to make it this year – pitched a shutout 7th and struck out 3 batters.
