CC Sabathia is back. And he got hit. There was some rust. Can’t they pitch him a few times in AAA before throwing him into a big league start? He’d been out three weeks with knee soreness. He pitched a scoreless 1st, but then allowed 4 runs in the 2nd capped by a 3-run homer to 3rd baseman Mike Freeman. He then walked two batters before getting out of the inning.
CC struck out the side in the 3rd and left. A silver lining.

Nestor Cortes Jr.came in and there was more bleeding — 2 runs in 2.1 innings. The Yanks were down 6-0 in the 6th.
Defense
The Yanks played terrific defense behind the pitchers. Gio Urshela made a terrific play on a roller to 3rd to nab a runner at the plate; Aaron Judge almost caught a homerun ball at the wall that made it 5-0, his glove appeared to be touched (interferred with) by a fan. And Brett Gardner made this catch:

Yanks Tried to Come Back
They had several chances to get back in the game:
- down 4-0 in the 2nd against Cleveland starter Mike Clevinger (8-2 3.11), Mike Tauchman came up with 1st and 2nd, 2 out, but flied out.
- down 4-0 in the 3rd, Gary Sanchez came up with 1st and 2nd, 2 out. But Sanchez struck out.
- down 6-0 in the 6th, Gleyber Torres came up against former Yankee Nick Goody with 2nd and 3rd, 2 out, but lined out to center.
The Yanks finally broke through in the 7th on a DJ LeMahieu 2-run homer to make it 6-2, but Cleveland answered with 2 runs in the 8th off Luis Cessa to make it 8-2.
Judge Provides Another Silver Lining
Aaron Judge doubled in a run in the 8th to make it 8-4. It was his 2nd hit of the day — a silver lining. His days with hits are starting to be more common than hitless days — a sign he may really be coming out of the slump.

Down 8-4 in the 9th, Gio Urshela came up with 2nd and 3rd, 2 out, and hit a drive to left that looked like a homerun but was caught at the wall for the ballgame.
Etcetera
With the loss the Yanks are now 83-43, 9.5 in 1st over Tampa, and 3.5 ahead of Houston for best record in the league.
