Hurricane Joaquin Andujar’s Ghost Heads Up East Coast

Joaquin Andujar died on September 8, 2015 in the Dominican Republic and shortly thereafter Hurricane Joaquin started forming over the Dominican Republic.

andujar2When Joaquin died, the baseball world mostly paid no attention. There were some articles out of Houston and St Louis but most fans missed the news. Hurricane Joaquin is now heading up the coast, looking like it will disrupt the final baseball weekend of the season and the Wild Card games.

“There is one word in America that says it all, and that one word is, ‘You never know'” — Joaquin Andujar was a funny guy, with Yogi Berra wit.

hurricanejoaquinAndujar was one of the elite pitchers in baseball for numerous years during his career, when he first came up with Houston teaming with J.R. Richard, and when he reached his pinnacle with St Louis as an ace who won big-pressure games. Andujar came up HUGE in the 1982 playoffs and World Series, helping the Cardinals to a title. He won 20 twice; was a 4-time All Star, won a Gold Glove, and 3 times finished in the top 7 in Cy Young voting.

andujar1As Hurricane Joaquin’s Ghost comes up the coast this weekend, another famous Joaquin quote comes to mind: “You can’t worry if it’s cold; you can’t worry if it’s hot; you only worry if you get sick. Because then if you don’t get well, you die.”

Enjoy the playoffs everyone. If the Yankees (or your favorite team) lose, it’s ok — it’s baseball — it’s entertainment — it’s fun! Enjoy this window of opportunity that is life.
