Woodruff Shuts Down Yanks. Milwaukee 4 NY 1

Bob Woodruff shut down the Yankee lineup for 8 innings in handing NY a 4-1 loss in Milwaukee on a Saturday night.

The big blow for Milwaukee was a 3-run homer by Willy Adames in the 3rd inning off Jameson Taillon.

Josh Donaldson hit a homerun for the only Yankee run as NY only got 5 hits on the night.

Aaron Judge went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk — raising his batting average to .312 and moving him into 3rd place in the American League batting title race — the leader is Luis Arraez at .316. That and Donaldson’s homer were amongst the few bright spots on the night for the Yanks.

The Yankees are now 87-58 and lead Toronto by 4.5 games; Tampa is 6 games out; and Baltimore remains 11.5 out. Milwaukee is 78-67, 8 games behind St Louis but 1.5 behind a Wild Card spot.

1. Taillon Loses

Taillon threw a lot of pitches in getting through the first 2 innings, Milwaukee batters fouling off lots of pitches before making out. In the 3rd, the Brewers broke through — a leadoff walk and 1-out single by Christian Yelich set the stage for Willy Adames, who hit a 3-run homer to left for a 3-0 Milwaukee lead.

“They turned up the pitch count early,” said Taillon afterwards. “Worked some really tough at bats. I probably had 4 or 5 at bats where I went 8 plus pitches today. Credit to them, fighting off good pitches, making me work, and kind of just waiting me out.”

After that, Taillon retired the next 6 batters in a row before a 1-out single by Garrett Mitchell in the 5th, followed by an RBI-double by Yellich to make it 4-1 Milwaukee.

Taillon got the next two batters to end the inning and finished the night with 5 innings, 4 hits, but 4 runs on 94 pitches and takes the loss to go 13-5 4.04.

How Monty Has Done Vs Milwaukee

With Milwaukee getting to Taillon — it’s interesting to contrast how Jordan Montgomery has fared against Milwaukee since being traded to St. Louis. In his first Cardinal start against Milwaukee:

  • On 8/17 — Monty pitched 6 innings of shutout ball.
  • On 9/13 — Monty’s last start earlier this week — he pitched 5 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs, 4 earned runs.

2. Woodruff Wins

Bob Woodruff used his 97-MPH fastball, 96-MPH sinker, 86-MPH changeup, and 82-MPH curveball to shut down the Yankee lineup for 8 innings — his longest stint of the season.

The right hander was facing an almost entirely right-handed Yankee lineup — and that didn’t help NY any. With Anthony Rizzo, Matt Chapman, Andrew Benintendi all out, and Joey Gallo traded — the switch-hitting Oswaldo Cabrera and the lefty Marwin Gonzalez were the only lefties in the lineup.

But Gonzalez was accidentally clocked in the side of the head by catcher Victor Caratini throwing the ball back to Woodruff in the 3rd inning, and had to leave the game. Switch hitter Aaron Hicks replaced him — and went 1-3 on the night. Cabrera went 0-4.

3. Donaldson Homer

Down 3-0, Josh Donaldson got the Yanks back in it with a homer in the top of the 4th. It would be the only Yankee run of the night.

4. Judge 1 for 3 — Now at .312

Aaron Judge struck out swinging his first time up against Woodward, but ripped a double to left his second time up. He flied out in this 3rd at bat, and was pitched around for a 5-pitch walk his last time up in the 8th.

He finished the night 1-3 with the walk, raising his average to .312 and moving into 3rd place in the American League. The current leaders:

5. Yankee Bullpen Good

Some good news for the Yanks: Greg Weissert, Aroldis Chapman, and Ron Marinaccio each pitched a shutout, no-hit inning — the 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively. Marinaccio struck out 3 and lowered his ERA to 1.88.

Miguel Andujar helped Chapman out in the 7th with a good catch in left.

  • Shohei Ohtani pitched 7 shutout innings for the Angels in their 2-1 win, going to 13-8 2.43 on the year — in the race vs Judge for the MVP.
