Yanks Blow Big Lead to Worst Team in Baseball — Sept 10, 2019: Detroit 11 NY 10

This was a game where Yankee fans on twitter were describing what they were doing when they came back and found that Detroit — the worst team in baseball at 42-100 — had erased the 6-0 early-game deficit to tie the game. Some were walking their dog (us); some like Barry Piatoff were having dinner; some were at a dinner party. Most missed Gleyber Torres‘ flub of a double-play grounder that Didi Gregorius fielded and threw to him at 2nd in the 3rd that would have ended the inning with the score 6-2 NY.

Instead two more singles and a sac fly tied it at 6-6, and it was anybody’s ballgame. Gleyber Torres got one back immediately with his 36th home run in the top of the 4th to give the Yanks a 7-6 lead. And Didi Gregorius made it 8-6 with a homer in the 6th.

But Detroit tied it and went ahead in the 6th against Cory Gearrin and Jonathan Loaisiga.

The Yankee offense came back — a 2-run bomb by Edwin Encarnacion in the 7th tied the game; another homer by Didi Gregorius later in the inning put the Yanks ahead 11-10.

Manager Aaron Boone then went to his ‘good’ relievers — Adam Ottavino came in to pitch the bottom of the 7th — but a walk, a passed ball by Gary Sanchez, and a 2-out single by 2nd baseman Harold Castro tied the game 11-11.

Zack Britton pitched a scoreless 8th, and with Tommy Kahnle nursing a sore wrist and Boone keeping Aroldis Chapman out of the tie game — Chance Adams came in allowed a 1-out double then a walk off single by Jordy Mercer. Ballgame.

Early Game

The Yanks jumped out to their 6-0 early game lead on the home run bat of Brett Gardner, who hit a homer in the 1st inning and the 2nd inning. He was on pace to hit 9 home runs in the game, tweeted Jimmy B — the tweet of the night. It was funny at the time at least. Tyler Wade hit a 2-run triple off the wall in the 2nd to make it 4-0 NY.

The Yankees were facing Edwin Jackson — who has played for more major league teams than any other player in Major League Baseball history, having played for his 14th club, the Toronto Blue Jays, in 2019 — according to his Wikipedia page.

Etcetera

Aaron Judge got the night off. Tyler Wade played right. This was consequential as twice in the game there was a play to right where Aaron Judge‘s arm might have turned the game around — but instead, both times, Wade threw home off line up the 3rd base line and with not as much velocity as a Judge throw:

  1.  A sac fly by left fielder Christin Stewart in the 3rd to make it 6-3 NY — Judge might have thrown the runner out at the plate to end the inning.
  2. A play at the plate on the Harold Castro single off Ottavino in the 7th to tie the game — Wade’s throw was not as strong as Judge’s and was just up the 3rd base line — Sanchez made a stab but missed the runner.

Oakland clobbered Houston so the Yanks remain tied with the Astros for the best record in baseball. The Astros won the season series 4-3 so the Yanks must finish with a better record to get home field advantage if the two teams meet in the playoffs. The Dodgers are 1 game back.
