Anthony Volpe Grand Slam, 3 Hits, 5 RBI! NY 10 Colorado 3

Anthony Volpe Grand Slam!

Anthony Volpe returned from demotion to the Minor Leagues to play 2nd for an injured Jazz Chisholm Jr. — and went 3 for 4 with an RBI single in the 2nd inning to put the Yanks up 3-1, and a Grand Slam in the 7th — leading NY to a 10-3 win over Colorado on a beautiful Thursday night in the Bronx.

Rookie Spencer Jones went 3 for 4 as well with 2 RBI’s, and Luis Garcia Jr. hit Another rocket Homerun — in the 1st to put NY up 2-0.

Max Fried reached his max pitch count of 80 pitches and was relieved with 1 out in the 4th inning — causing a long bullpen day. Fried allowed only 1 hit and struck out 7 of the 10 batters he retired, but walked 2 and went to 3 balls on many batters.

Michael Fullmer, John Schreiber, Ryan Yarbrough, Brent Headrick, and Luis Gil took it from there — holding onto a 4-1 lead thru the 6th, when Headrick allowed an RBI triple to make it 4-2. The Yanks broke the game open with 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th.

Volpe’s HR was the 2nd Grand Slam for the Yankees in 2 nights, George Lombard Jr. having hit one the night before; NY had not had a Grand Slam all season until then.

“Amazing feeling,” said Volpe when asked what it felt like rounding the bases after the Slam. “Had a good approach, and just tried to take advantage. And that’s what it’s all about, and I applied it.”

“It was kind of a weird outing, where I was executing in certain counts, but I also had a lot of really, really bad misses which caused a lot of deep counts,” said Max Fried afterwards about his performance.

NY sweeps the 3-game series and improves to 84-62, pulling to 3 games back of Tampa, which lost earlier in the day. Boston is 4.5 behind NY. Colorado drops to 55-91.

1. Another BLAST by Garcia Gives NY 2-0 in 1st

Colorado started 30-year-old, 6’4 righthander Ryan Feltner, who came in at 5-9 5.82. Ben Rice led the bottom of the 1st off with a single to right — but Feltner got a strike out and ground out and was almost out of the inning when Luis Garcia Jr. Blasted an 83-MPH changeup 415 feet to center for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

2. Volpe RBI Single & Belli Sac Fly Put NY Up 4-1 in 2nd

Max Fried allowed a solo HR to Kyle Karros in the top of the 2nd, so it was a 2-1 game when the Yanks went back at Feltner in the bottom of the 2nd. Ryan McMahon led off with a single, Austin Wells walked (he would walk 3 times on the night), and Anthony Volpe singled past shortstop for a 3-1 Yankee lead.

Ben Rice then grounded out, moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd, and Cody Bellinger hit a sac fly to center for a 4-1 NY lead.

3. Fried Good but Leaves with High Pitch Count in 4th

Max Fried was getting ahead in counts and getting a lot of strikeouts. He struck out the side in the top of the 2nd — around a 2-out solo HR by Karros.

But Fried was running into long counts — getting ahead 0-2 then running the count to 3-2 on several batters. After walking former Yank TJ Rumfield leading off the 4th, then striking out Cole Carrigg — he was relieved at 80 pitches, which was the predetermined number the Yankees were going to have him throw.

4. Fullmer, Schreiber & Yarbrough Hold the Middle Innings

Michael Fulmer relieved Fried and got the last 2 outs of the 4th, stranding the runner at 1st and holding NY’s lead at 4-1.

John Schreiber pitched a shutout 5th — allowing but a 1-out single, and NY was through 5 with the 4-1 lead. It was going to be a long night for the bullpen so you started to figure who they would pitch in each of the next 4 innings.

The Yankees almost increased their lead in the bottom of the 5th when Cody Bellinger hit a high fly to right off reliever 26-year-old, 6’0 righty reliever Zach Agnos that Jordan Beck robbed of being a Homerun — gloving the ball over the wall and bringing it back into the playing field.

Meanwhile Schreiber got the first out of the 6th and passed the baton to Ryan Yarbrough who got the last 2 outs of the inning.

The Yanks had another chance to break the game open in the bottom of the 6th — loading the bases on a Spencer Jones leadoff single, Austin Wells 2-out walk, and Anthony Volpe infield single. But Ben Rice flied out to the warning track in center to leave the bases loaded.

5. Colorado Pull within 4-2 Off Headrick in 7th

And so it was a 4-1 Yankee lead to the 7th, when Yarbrough got the first 2 outs — the 2nd on a sparkling play by Spencer Jones in centerfield — coming in and making a sliding catch.

But Yarbough walked Ezequiel Tovar with 2 outs and was relieved by Brent Headrick, who allowed an RBI triple to Jake McCarthy for a 4-2 game — the ball hitting off the wall in right — just missing a 2-run HR.

Headrick then walked Connor Norby before getting Hunter Goodman to fly to left to leave the runners on 1st and 3rd and keeping the score 4-2 NY.

6. Spencer 2-RBI Hit & Volpe Slam Break Game Open in 7th

After getting through the 6th, Zach Agnos stayed in for the 7th — and it was one inning too many.

Cody Bellinger led off with a double to center, Jasson Dominguez walked and then The Martian and Bellinger executed a double steal of 2nd and 3rd. Luis Garcia Jr. grounded out, holding the runners, but Spencer Jones singled to center for 2 runs and a 6-2 game.

Agnos got Lombard to pop out but walked Ryan McMahon and was relieved by 33-year-old, 6’3 righty Jimmy Herget — who walked Austin Wells to load the bases.

And Anthony Volpe swacked a 91-MPH sinker to the short porch in opposite-field right for a Grand Slam and 10-2 game.

7. Gil Pitches Last 2 Innings

Luis Gil came in to pitch the 8th and 9th. He allowed a 1-out walk and 2-out single to right that Jasson Dominguez booted for a run. The Martian was sent down to the minors after the game.

Gil allowed 3 consecutive single to start the 9th, loading the bases with nobody out in a 10-3 game. David Bednar started to warm in the pen.

But Gil then got 3 consecutive outs — shallow fly out to left, shallow fly out to center, and strikeout for the old ballgame.
