George Lombard Jr. Grand Slam with 2 outs in 3rd puts NY up 5-0.

The Summer of George Continues!

George Lombard Jr. hit a Grand Slam into the short porch in opposite-field right with 2 outs in the 3rd to give NY a 5-0 lead, and Will Warren and the Yankee pen took it from there for a 6-1 win over the Rockies on a beautiful, 75-degree, summer-breezy Wednesday night in the Bronx.

Aaron Judge got 2 hits on the night — including a hit with 2 outs in the 3rd to keep the inning going. Luis Garcia Jr. followed with a double, and Spencer Jones worked a 3-2 walk to load the bases for Lombard.

Garcia had hit a HR in the 2nd to put NY up 1-0, and Cody Bellinger hit a HR in the 8th to pad the Yankee lead at 6-1.

Will Warren went 6 strong innings, allowing just 4 hits and a run, and striking out 8 while walking 2. Then John Schreiber, Paul Blackburn, and Michael Fulmer pitched a shutout inning each.

“That was big. A lot of really good at bats to set up that inning,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about the Lombard slam. “All with 2 outs — Judgie gets the hit, Luis gets a hit, Jones had a really good at bat where he gets behind, fouls off some pitches, laid off some pitches — and then we get the 4 ball from George. Really good to see that all with 2 outs.”

Warren wins to go 10-6 4.05. He started the season 7-2 then went through a rough patch, but has been pitching great lately — in both his starts and a 2-inning relief appearance earlier in the week.

“I think it’s a little (bit) posture — staying taller,” said Will Warren afterwards. “I think it keeps me more in line, therefore I can fill the zone up, and a little tick in velo too.”

NY improves to 83-62, still 4 back of Tampa but now 4 ahead of Boston. Colorado drops to 55-90.

1. Garcia Gets to Sugano in 2nd

Colorado started 36-year-old, 6’2 righthander Tomoyuki Sugano — Tommy Gun as they call him — and he struck out the side in the 1st with 83-MPH sweepers, lots of 88-MPH splitters, and an occasional 94-MPH sinker.

But Luis Garcia Jr. got to a 94-MPH sinker leading off the 2nd, and Rocketed it to the Moon in right center for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

2. Warren Terrific

Will Warren countered Sugano by striking out the side in the top of the 2nd.

Warren got into and out of trouble in the 3rd — allowing a leadoff double to Norby and walking Veen to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out.

Warren then got a quick strike on Jake McCarthy — who was looking to bunt the runners over, then threw consecutive wicked changeups — both fouled off by McCarthy, including the second one for strike 3.

Warren then struck out shortstop Cole Carrigg and got former Yank TJ Rumfield to foul out to 3rd — Ryan McMahon making a terrific catch against the stands — keeping the score 1-0 Yankees.

Given a 5-0 lead by Lombard’s Grand Slam, Warren pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, with another strikeout.

Warren allowed a solo HR to 2nd baseman Connor Norby with 1 out in the 5th making it a 5-1 game.

He then allowed consecutive singles to leftfielder Zac Veen and Jake McCarthy — but got Carrigg to ground out into a HUGE 1st-to-shortstop-topitcher double play.

After that Warren pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th to end his night at 94 pitches, up 5-1.

3. Lombard Slam Puts NY Up 5-0 in 3rd

After the Garcia HR in the 2nd, Sugano walked Spencer Jones and Austin Wells in between getting 3 outs, then got the first 2 outs of the 3rd so looked to be settling down in the 1-0 game.

But Aaron Judge laced a 2-out single to left, Luis Garcia Jr. ripped a double to right, and Spencer Jones worked an 8-pitch walk, fouling off consecutive 3-2 pitches before taking a slider low.

And then George Lombard Jr. ripped a 1-0 slider to opposite field right — into the short porch for a Grand Slam and 5-0 Yankee lead!

4. Bellinger HR in 8th Makes it 6-1

Cody Bellinger hit a solo HR to right leading off the bottom of the 8th off Juan Mejia to make it 6-1 NY.

5. Schreiber to Blackburn to Fulmer = 3 Shutout Innings

The Yankee patched-up pen looks different these days. John Schreiber and Michael Fulmer have been added to replace the injured Fernando Cruz — and both were used in this game.

  • John Schreiber pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 7th.
  • Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 8th — allowing just a 2-out walk, and
  • Michael Fulmer pitched a shutout 9th — allowing a 2-out triple to 3rd baseman Kyle Karros but getting a groundout for the old ballgame.
