Spencer Jones got 3 hits including a HR to lead the Yankee attack supporting another great Gerrit Cole start, to produce an easy 6-1 Yankee win in Baltimore on a Thursday night — sweeping the series to pull 4 games back of Tampa.
A Spencer Jones single started a 3-run rally in the 3rd inning to give NY a 3-0 lead — 2 of the runs coming with 2 outs on a clutch RBI single by Ben Rice and RBI double by new Yankee Heliot Ramos. The other new Yankee, Luis Garcia Jr., hit a HR in the 6th to make it 4-1 and Spencer Jones hit a HR later in the inning to give Gerrit Cole a 5-1 lead.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. tripled in Luis Garcia Jr. in the 8th for insurance.
Ryan Yarbrough through a shutout 7th thru 9th for a 3-inning save.
It was the Yankees’ 4th win in a row, and all of Brian Cashman’s machinations have been at play during the streak — with newcomers Ramos and Garcia spiking the Yankee attack, rookies Spencer Jones and George Lombard Jr. starring, and so many acquisitions like Jose Caballero and the strong bullpen supporting the strong starting staff.
“I think good location and good mix of pitches,” said Gerrit Cole afterwards about the reason for the success of his outing.
NY improves to 72-55 and pull to 4 behind Tampa, and pull out to 4.5 ahead of Boston. Baltimore falls to 61-67.
1. Jones Starts 3-Run Rally in 3rd
Baltimore started Kyle Bradish, their 29-year-old, 6’3 righty who came in with a 7-11 3.65 record.
Bradish had a shutout going into the 3rd, when Spencer Jones and Austin Wells hit consecutive singles to lead off the inning to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Jose Caballero to shortstop that Gunnar Henderson flubbed for an error to give NY a 1-0 lead — with runners on 1st and 2nd and still nobody out.
But Bradish got Trent Grisham to hit a 95-MPH sinker into a double play, and so with 2 outs, NY had Austin Wells on 3rd — when Ben Rice ripped a clutch single to left for a 2-0 game.

Luis Garcia Jr. reached on an infield single before Bradish struck out Chisholm to finally end the inning.
2. Garcia & Jones HR’s in 6th Make It 5-1 NY
After that Bradish settled down to pitch a shutout 4th and 5th — and so it was a 3-1 game when Luis Garcia Jr. hit a 413-foot HR to right center to lead off the 6th making it 4-1.

3. Cole Brilliant
All of that offense made it easy for Gerrit Cole, who threw down yet another dominant start: 6 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 8 K’s, and 1 walk.

The only run he allowed was to leftfielder Dylan Beavers in the bottom of the 3rd, making it a 3-1 game at the time.

4. Jazz Triples in Insurance Run in 8th
NY added an insurance run in the top of the 8th when Luis Garcia Jr. singled off 6’3 righty Albert Suarez with 1 out, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. tripled him home.

Next batter George Lombard Jr. hit a grounder back to the pitcher and Jazz was thrown out at home. So the Yanks lost the baserunner and a possible run as next batter Spencer Jones singled for his 3rd hit of the night — then stole 2nd base.
5. Yarbrough 3 Shutout Innings
More good news for the Yanks: Ryan Yarbrough was absolutely dominant — pitching a shutout 7th, 8th, and 9th — retiring all 9 batters he faced — for the old ballgame.
