Thank You Trent Grisham. NY 3 Baltimore 1

Trent Grisham — who has been utterly crapped on by Yankee fans while in a 1-28 slump in July — hit a solo HR in the 3rd and drove in 2 runs with a Clutch 2-out single in the 7th for the Yankees’ only runs in a 3-1 win over the Orioles on a beautiful Monday night in Baltimore.

Grisham has been red hot in August — batting .301 in 53 at bats since August 2nd.

His hitting backed a good start by Carlos Rodon — returning from the IL to pitch 4 solid innings of 2-hit, 1-run ball. The Yankee bullpen did the rest, with Yerry De Los Santos, Brent Headrick, Fernando Cruz, Paul Blackburn, and David Bednar combining for 5 shutout innings.

“He’s been dialed in pretty good, and obviously hitting for some power now over the last several as well,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Big night for him and we were able to keep them off the board enough.”

“I thought his stuff was good,” said Boone about Rodon. “He had swing and miss going; he flashed some really good sliders; the fastball was there — had life to it; had carry to it. Probably not the best strike throwing so there were some deeper counts, and a lot of 3-ball counts, but stuff wise he threw the ball well and his fastball and slider were good tonite.”

NY improves to 70-55, and pull to 5 behind Tampa, and stay 2.5 ahead of Boston. Baltimore falls to 61-65, 14.5 back.

1. Grisham HR Puts NY Up 1-0 in 3rd

The Orioles started Shane Baz, the 27-year-old, 6’3 righthander who came in with a 4-12 4.00 record and he pitched well — 6.1 innings of 4-hit ball, striking out 10 and walking 3.

Baz struck out the side in the 1st inning and had no hitter going in the 3rd when Trent Grisham — who had struck out against Baz in the 1st inning — ripped a 403-foot HR to right for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

2. Rodon Good

Rodon was pitching for the first time since June 28th and was on a 65-pitch limit, said manager Aaron Boone after the game.

Rodon had life on his fastball and a good slider, and was helped by his defense too. Austin Wells made a terrific catch in foul ground in the 1st inning.

Rodon K’s 2 to Leave Bases Loaded in the 2nd — & Bail Out Ump

Rodon got into and out of trouble in the 2nd — allowing a walk and a single with 1 out, then getting a double-play grounder that Jazz Chisholm Jr. booted after the 2nd base ump got in his way and obstructed the view of the ball.

Rodon bailed out the ump by rearing back and striking out former Yank Carlos Narvaez (Adley Rutschman plays for Boston these days) and Jackson Holliday to end the inning.

Rodon struck out the first 2 batters of the 3rd, but allowed a solo HR to Coby Mayo for a 1-1 tie.

Lombard with the Throw of the Night

George Lombard Jr. made the throw of the night for the first out of the 4th inning.

Rodon got the next 2 outs of the 4th for a 1-2-3 inning to complete his night.

3. Baz Tough

Shane Baz was equally good — throwing 96-MPH heat coupled with a tough 86-MPH knuckle curve to strike out 10 Yankees.

4. Grisham Clutch 2-RBI Single in 7th Puts NY Up 3-1

Baz pitched into the 7th — the score tied 1-1 — when Spencer Jones led off against him with a single, and a strikeout of Jazz Chisholm Jr. later, George Lombard Jr. singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out.

31-year-old, 6’6 lefty Josh Walker relieved Baz and walked Paul Goldschmidt to load the bases with 1 out, but struck out Amed Rosario for the 2nd out.

And then Trent Grisham again came through — ripping a single up the middle off the lefty Walker for a 3-1 Yankee lead.

4. Yank Pen Exceptional

The Yankee pen threw 5 shutout innings to win the game for NY.

Yerry de los Santos was exceptional — pitching a shutout 5th and 6th, allowing just a 2-out single in the 5th and throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th. The 28-year-old, 6’3 righthander used a 96-MPH four-seam fastball and sinker, and an 88-MPH changeup, and ended up getting the win to go 1-0 0.64. De los Santos came up through the Pirates organization and was signed as a minor-league free agent by the Yanks in November, 2023.

Brent Headrick came into a 3-1 game in the 7th and allowed a single and walk to start things off, then got a strike out and fly out and handed the ball to Fernando Cruz who got a lineout to right for the final out. Phew.

Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 8th — allowing a 1-out walk but getting a lineout and strikeout to end the inning.

And David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th, striking out the first 2 batters and getting a groundout for the old ballgame.
