This is getting ridiculous.
This time the Yankee offense could only get 1 run against the Blue Jays on their bullpen day — just like the final game of last year’s playoffs — as NY wasted another terrific Cam Schlittler start in losing 4-1 on a Saturday afternoon in Toronto.
The Yanks had an early 1-0 lead on a leadoff single in the 2nd by Spencer Jones, and an RBI single by George Lombard Jr. later in the inning. And that was it.
Schlittler allowed a run in the 3rd and left in the 6th in a 1-1 tie. Brent Headrick blinked, allowing a run in the 7th to take the loss, and Tim Hill allowed 2 runs in the 8th and Toronto waltzed to the win.
The only good news besides another great performance by Schlittler, was that Austin Wells got another hit (1 for 3, batting .180) — he continues to be hot in August with a .300 average for the month so far.
The Yanks got only 4 hits on the day — one each by Spencer Jones, Lombard, Austin Wells, and Luis Garcia Jr. They have scored 2 runs in the last 27 innings.
“Broken record, we know we have to be better,” said manager Aaron Boone. “This is who we got — these are our guys. And I continue to believe wholeheartedly looking at these names all capable of doing really big things for us. But we have to go do it. I don’t sense guys pressing. I feel like I know what that looks like — I’ve been there done that; I’ve seen that from guys before. We’re just not getting some results right now.”
NY falls to 68-55, and remain 6.5 behind Tampa but are only 2 ahead of Boston. Toronto improves to 61-64, 14.5 out.
1. S Jones & Lombard Put NY Up 1-0 in 2nd
Toronto threw a bullpen day at NY.
Braydon Fisher, their #2 reliever, pitched a shutout 1st — walking Trent Grisham to lead off the game but then getting 3 straight outs.
Tiedemann pitched the 2nd — and Spencer Jones led off with a single to center. Jones then stole 2nd base after Jazz Chisholm Jr. popped out, and George Lombard Jr. singled to left for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

2. Schlittler Great
Meanwhile Cam Schlittler wasn’t at his best — but still pitched well and deserved better.
Schlittler pitched around a single and a walk in the 1st, then threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd.
He allowed a 1-out walk followed by consecutive singles by Nathan Lukes and Alejandro Kirk for a 1-1 tie in the 3rd, before retiring the final 2 batters of the inning.
Schlittler then got in gear and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th.

He got the 1st out of the 6th — for 9 straight batters retired — then allowed a walk and a single and was relieved by Brent Headrick, who got the next 2 batters on a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
Schlittler’s line: 5.1 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 7 K’s, and 3 walks. He doesn’t get the decision so is 10-6 2.19.
3. Headrick Coughs Up a Run in 7th and Loses
After getting the final 2 outs of the 6th, Headrick blinked in the 7th — allowing a leadoff single to Ernie Clement and an RBI double to Charles McAdoo for a 2-1 Toronto lead.
Centerfielder Brett Bateman then reached on a bunt single to 3rd, putting runners on the corners with nobody out.
But Headrick got Nathan Lukes to bunt the ball right back to him — he held the runner McAdoo at 3rd and threw Lukes out.
4. Blackburn Heroic in 7th
With 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, NY brought in Paul Blackburn — and he intentionally walked Alejandro Kirk to load the bases.
Blackburn then struck out Miles Straw and got Kazuma Okamoto to line out to right to leave the bases loaded.
5. Hill Allows 2 in 8th
Tim Hill didn’t have it in the 8th — an infield single, hit-by-pitch, and single by Ernie Clement loaded the bases with nobody out in the 2-1 game.
A single by McAdoo made it 3-1 Toronto — bases still loaded with nobody out.
Hill finally buckled down and got a shallow fly out, holding the runners, and a groundout to score a run and make it 4-1.
Yerry de los Santos came in and intentionally walked Alejandro Kirk to re-load the bases, and then got Miles Straw to groundout to end the inning.
6. Toronto Bullpen Day Kills NY Again
After the Lombard RBI single in the 2nd, the Toronto pen shut the Yankees down.
- 6’4 lefty Ricky Tiedemann got the last 2 outs of the 2nd and the first 2 outs of the 3rd.
- 6’3 righty Simeon Woods Richardson got the last out of the 3rd and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th.
- 6’2 lefty Mason Fluharty pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th.
- 6’3 righty Spencer Miles allowed a leadoff single to Luis Garcia Jr. in the 7th — but Garcia was thrown out trying to steal 2nd in the 1-1 game. Miles then got the next 2 batters out.
- 6’3 righty and submariner Tyler Rogers pitched a shutout 8th — allowing a 2-out single to Austin Wells in a 2-1 game and bringing Trent Grisham up — giving the Yankees hope. But Rogers got Grisham to ground out.
- And by the top of the 9th Toronto was up 4-1, and 6’1 righty ace reliever Louis Varland struck out the side — Ben Rice, Heliot Ramos, and Luis Garcia Jr. — for the old ballgame.
