Yanks Can’t Get Big Hit — Strand 11 Baserunners. St Louis 3 NY 1

George Lombard Jr. with a diving play behind second, and then the powerful throw to 1st for the out.

Will Warren allowed back-to-back, 2-out doubles in the 5th inning and that spelled doom for the Yankees as they only got 4 hits and 1 run in a 3-1 loss to St Louis on a tropical-forest humid, thundershower Wednesday night in the Bronx. The game was delayed 1 hour at the start by rain.

The Yanks had plenty of chances to score more runs as the Cardinals pitching staff walked 8 Yankees on the night. NY had one or more baserunners in 8 of the 9 innings — so NY could’ve plated more runs if they got more hits. But they didn’t. NY was 0-9 with runners in scoring position.

The only run the Yanks got came in the 6th when Cardinals’ Ace starter Andre Pallante walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. to force in a run with the bases loaded. The Yanks almost got 2 runs when the prior batter — Spencer Jones — walked on a 3-2 pitch to force in a run — but St Louis challenged the call and won, so Jones was ruled struck out.

Pallante won to go 12-6 3.63.

“I thought Pallante was good but we gotta get it done,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “We gotta come through in those situations. Liked the opportunities tonite. Had a lot of chances. Felt like baserunners every inning. But we have to be able to deliver, and we haven’t done that enough.”

NY drops to 64-51 and are now 4.5 behind Tampa and only 1 game ahead of Boston. St Louis improves to 57-58.

1. Warren Good — But Allows Back-to-Back 2-Out Doubles in 5th

Will Warren pitched well and had a shutout going into the 5th in a pitcher’s duel with Cardinals’ Ace Andre Pallante.

He was helped in the 3rd with a great play up the middle by George Lombard Jr. for the final out.

But in the 5th Warren allowed a leadoff single to 3rd baseman Blaze Jordan and a 1-out single to DH Jimmy Crooks. He struck out 2nd baseman Cesar Preito for the 2nd out — but with 2 outs, JJ Wetherholt doubled to center to drive in 2 runs and make it 2-0 St. Louis.

Catcher Ivan Herrera then hit a ground rule double to center for a 3-0 Cardinals lead.

Warren got the first out of the 6th, but allowed a single to centerfielder Nathan Church and was relieved at 91 pitches. He loses to go 8-6 4.18.

2. Pallante Good — Yanks Get Run on Bases-Loaded Walk in 6th

The 27-year-old, 6’0 righty Andre Pallante came in at 11-6 3.72 and he pitched well — throwing a 97-MPH four-seam fastball, 88-MPH slider, and 79-MPH knuckle curve — although the Yanks were able to pepper him.

Luis Garcia Jr. reached on a 2-out error in the 1st — but Pallante picked him off 1st.

Heliot Ramos led of the 2nd with a double to right — his first hit as a Yankee. But Pallante struck out the next 2 batters and got a groundout to end the mild threat.

Austin Wells singled with 1 out in the 3rd (he went 1-2 on the day) but Pallante struck out the next 2 batters. Pallante pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th but NY almost got to him in the 5th when Ryan McMahon walked with 1 out and George Lombard Jr. singled to center. Unfortunately Austin Wells hit the ball right back to Pallante who started a double play.

Pallante got the first out of the 6th before walking Ben Rice and Luis Garcia Jr. — and was relieved by 6’2 righty George Soriano.

Soriano hit Heliot Ramos with a pitch to load the bases with 1 out — then seemed to walk Spencer Jones on a 3-2 pitch to force in a run and make it a 3-1 game. But the Cardinals challenged the call and won — the ball ‘just’ knicking the outside upper corner of the strike zone.

Soriano then walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. on a 3-2 pitch for a 3-1 game.

But Soriano struck out Ryan McMahon to leave the bases loaded.

3. Yank Bullpen Good: Castro to Hill to Blackburn

Righty Kervin Castro relieved Warren with 1 out and a runner on in the 6th — and got 2 outs surrounding a walk to get out of the inning.

Castro got the first out of the 7th before being relieved by lefty Tim Hill who got the final 2 outs.

And Hill got the first out of the 8th before handing the baton to righty Paul Blackburn, who got the final 2 outs.

Blackburn got in and out of trouble in the 9th — NY desperately trying to stay in the 3-1 game. Blackburn allowed a leadoff single to Jordan, struck out leftfielder Bryan Torres, but allowed a double to Jimmy Crooks to put 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.

Blackburn then worked out of the jam — getting a groundout to 3rd — McMahon holding the runners — walked JJ Wetherholt to load the bases, and struck out Herrera to end the inning. Phew.

4. Yanks Get One or More Baserunners in 8 of 9 Innings

The Yankees got chances against the Cardinals bullpen but could not come up with an RBI hit.

  • Soriano got the 1st out of the 7th and was relieved by 29-year-old, 6’2 lefty Justin Bruhl with lefty Austin Wells due up. NY pinch hit Paul Goldschmidt and he doubled to left. But Bruihl got Trent Grisham to foul out, walked Ben Rice — and got Luis Garcia Jr. to ground out.
  • 35-year-old, 6’4 righty Ryne Stanek got the first 2 outs of the 8th, but walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ryan McMahon to put the tying run at 1st. But Stanek reared back and struck out George Lombard Jr. on 3 pitches — a slider and 2 fastballs, the last on 99 MPH.
  • 31-year-old, 6’4 righty Riley O’Brien pitched the 9th — and got the first 2 outs before Ben Rice worked a walk, bringing up Ali Sanchez as the tying run. But O’Brien struck him out for the old ballgame.
