Jazz Chisholm’s 2 HRs, 5 RBI’s Propel Yanks. NY 8 Pittsburgh 5

Jazz hits 3-run HR in 1st to give NY a 4-0 lead.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a 3-run HR in the 1st to give NY a 4-0 lead, then hit a 2-run HR in the 3rd to put NY back on top 6-5 after Pittsburgh had taken a lead, to propel the Yankees to an 8-5 win over the Pirates on a beautiful Monday night in the Bronx.

Chisholm, a lefty swinger, hit the HR’s off Pirates’ young righthanded ace Braxton Ashcroft, who came in with a 9-3 3.49 record and left with a 9-4 3.95 slash line. NY peppered Ashcraft for all 8 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits in 3 innings.

Ryan Weathers started for NY and gave up the early 4-0 Yankee lead, then put NY behind 5-4 by the top of the 3rd off an Esmerlyn Valdez 2-run HR. But he weathered the tough Pirate lineup into the 5th.

Angel Chivilli relieved Weathers and looked great again — pitching 1.1 shutout innings to get the win. Brent Headrick, Tim Hill, and Fernando Cruz followed with shutout ball.

“My teammates pulled me aside and tole me I’m the best in the world and just have to keep on believing it,” said Jazz Chisholm Jr. afterwards, about his recent hitting streak which included a big game-winning HR the night before.

“Three different pitches too,” added manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Hits the fastball last night out the other way, got a curveball the first time that stayed up — that’s a pitch a lot of teams have been throwing at him and he didn’t miss it, and then got a slider and was able to keep it fair. He’s capable of that — when he gets it rolling he’s capable of big things and obviously that was a big night for him and for us tonite. When he’s going good he’s a game changer. He can beat you in a lot of different ways.”

NY improves to 56-44, and remain 1.5 behind Tampa; Boston won their 14th in a row and remains 6 out. Pittsburgh falls to 52-49.

1. Jazz 3-run HR Puts NY Up 4-0 in 1st

Ben Rice walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 1st, and then Paul Goldschmidt hit a grounder that bounced off 3rd baseman Nick Gonzales‘ glove — and Rice scampered all the way home for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Cody Bellinger followed with a single to right that sent Goldschmidt to 3rd, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored everyone with a 3-run HR to right.

2. Weathers Coughs Up the Lead

Ryan Weathers pitched a shutout 1st but got in trouble in the 2nd — a single by 1st baseman Ryan O’Hearn, double by DH Marcell Ozuna, and 2-run double by shortstop Jared Triolo made it 4-2 NY. Weathers then got 2 outs but a 2-out single by Nick Gonzales made it 4-3 NY.

Weathers then walked leftfielder Ryan Reynolds leading off the 3rd, and rightfielder Esmerlyn Valdez hit a 2-run shot to right for a 5-4 Pirates lead. The 4-0 Yankee lead was gone like that.

But Weathers hung in — allowing a leadoff single in the 4th but getting 3 straight outs, then getting 2 outs sandwiching a walk in the 5th when he was relieved at 99 pitches.

“Just a good job by Ryan,” said Boone about Weathers. “Where it was a struggle those first couple of innings, but he held the line enough to get us a couple of outs into the 5th and felt like we could get it home from there. Good job against a good offense of bending but not completely breaking and giving us a chance to win.”

3. Jazz 2-run HR Puts NY Back Up 6-5 in 3rd

With the 4-0 lead gone, and now down 5-4, the Yanks got right back at Ashcraft in the bottom of the 3rd — a leadoff single by Paul Goldschmidt, and 1-out shot to right by Jazz Chisholm Jr. — hitting a 92-MPH, 3-2 slider just fair down the right-field line for a 6-5 Yankee lead!

4. Caballero 2-RBI Double Puts NY Up 8-5 in 3rd

The inning wasn’t over — Jasson Dominguez singled to center, Ryan McMahon singled to right, Austin Wells reached on an infield single to load the bases, and Jose Caballero hit a ground rule double to left for an 8-5 Yankee lead.

Ashcroft finally got the last 2 outs of the inning — getting Trent Grisham to ground out to 2nd which held the runner on 3rd, and Ben Rice struck out — to keep the score at 8-5 NY.

5. Pirate Pen Shuts Yanks Down Rest of Way

And that was it for the scoring. Wilber Dotel — a 23-year-old 6’3 righty — came in for the Pirates and shut the Yanks out for the next 3 innings on 1 hit, striking out 5.

Brandon Eisert followed with a shutout 7th and Dennis Santana pitched a shutout 8th.

6. Tempers Flare in 8th

Tempers flared in the 8th when Santana was pitching to Jose Caballero with 1 out and Austin Wells, who had singled, on 1st.

Caballero kept pausing at the plate to disrupt Santana’s rhythm, then hit into a double play — after which Santana and Caballero exchanged words and the dugouts emptied.

7. Yankee Pen Shuts Pirates Down Rest of Way

The Yankee pen was tremendous too — pitching 4.1 shutout innings.

Angel Chivilli relieved Weathers with 2 outs in the 5th and got the final out, then pitched a shutout 6th with his easy-motion delivery and 98-MPH heat.

Brent Headrick pitched a shutout 7th, Tim Hill got the first 2 outs of the 8th before allowing a single, and Fernando Cruz came in to get the final out of the 8th, and pitch a 1-2-3 shutout 9th — striking out 3 with his Filthy splitter — for the old ballgame.
