Jazz Chisholm Jr. turned a loss into a win by launching a towering 2-run HR with 1 out in the top of the 9th, vaulting the Yanks from a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead en route to a 5-3 win over the Nationals on a Friday night in Washington DC.
Austin Wells followed with a HR to right center with 2 outs to make it 5-3, and David Bednar wrapped it up with a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th to get the win — as he had pitched a shutout 8th as well.
Ryan Weathers started for the Yanks and pitched well in a game that was delayed 2 hours by thunderstorms. NY peppered Washington for 13 hits on the night, but got all of its runs on HR’s — the others being a solo HR by Ben Rice in the 1st to give NY a 1-0 lead and a HR by Jasson Dominguez in the 4th to give NY a 2-1 lead.
The Yanks were leading 2-1 in the 7th when consecutive HR balls by Keibert Ruiz and James Wood on consecutive pitches by Tim Hill “turned the game around in the blink of an eye”, said Rickie Ricardo on the radio.
Until Jazz un-turned it.
“Good to see a big swing in a big spot,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “(Matt) Krook’s a tough left-on-left; that’s not a comfortable at bat necessarily. To hang in there and stay on that pitch and absolutely destroy it was a big-time at bat.”
“Jazz is such a dynamic player,” added Boone. “He got off to a tough start in April. Since then he’s been fine. Jazz should be fine; he’s better than that. Hopefully he’s setting himself for a really good 2nd half, because when he gets it going he changes the game in a lot of ways and can even carry a team for certain stretches.”
NY improves to 52-42 and remains 4 games back of Tampa in the AL East. Washington drops to 48-47.
1. Rice HR in 1st Puts NY Up 1-0
The game was delayed 2 hours by thunderstorms and soon after it started at 8:45 pm, lefty Ben Rice ripped a solo HR off 6’3 lefty Carson Palmquist for a 1-0 Yankee lead. It was Rice’s 29th HR of the year. He just hit 2 the day before.

2. Weathers Good Despite the Weather
Ryan Weathers started for NY and pitched well.

The only run he allowed was in the 3rd on a leadoff double by 1st baseman James Wood, a single by 3rd baseman Curtis Mead, and a doubleplay that scored the run.
Amed Rosario made 2 errors in the early innings to make life difficult for the Yanks — but Weathers pulled through.
Rosario blew a doubleplay grounder in the 2nd inning to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out, but Weathers got the next 2 batters.
Rosario made a throwing error in the 4th that caused DH Andres Chaparro to be on 3rd with 1 out — but Weathers got Nunez to hit a grounder to shortstop — and Jose Caballero threw Chaparro out at home (in a run down) — and then struck out a batter to end the inning.

Ryan McMahon pinch-hit for Rosario and replaced him at 3rd base in the 4th inning, after the Nationals switched from the lefty Palmquist to the righty Littell.
3. Martian HR in 4th Puts NY Up 2-1
Jasson Dominguez got the Yanks back the lead with a solo HR off Zach Littell in the top of the 4th.

Littell had come in after Palmquist left after 3 innings. Littell ended up pitching 4 innings — allowing 5 hits but just the 1 run on The Martian HR.
4. Lady Luck & Fernando Save Yanks in 6th
Lady Luck and Fernando Cruz came to Weathers’ aid in the 6th.
With 1 out shortstop CJ Abrams doubled to left, and next batter Jacob Young singled to left — which should have scored the run — but Abrams fell down rounding 3rd — flat down on his face — and had to go back to 3rd.

Fernando Cruz came in and struck out Daylen Lile and former-Yank Jorbit Vivas to end the inning.
5. HR’s Off Hill “Turn Game Around in the Blink of an Eye”
And so it was 2-1 Yanks in the bottom of the 7th and things were looking good after Tim Hill got the 1st out.
Just as Emmanuel Berbari and Rickie Ricardo were talking about how good the Yankee bullpen has been this year — the best bullpen in the American League they said — 2nd baseman (and 9th batter) Nasim Ruiz and Wood hit back-to-back HR’s on consecutive pitches by Hill to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead.

6. Jazz to the Rescue
The Yanks were hitting the ball hard all night — and getting lots of hits — but only getting runs on the HR balls.
In the top of the 8th, Anthony Volpe pinch-hit for Ryan McMahon and walked to lead off the inning. Ben Rice then hit a scorcher — right at Young at 1st for a doubleplay.
Matt Krook came in for the save in the top of the 9th, and got Cody Bellinger on a hard-hit grounder to 2nd.
But Jasson Dominguez — who seems to get 2 hits every game these days — got his 2nd hit of the game with a single to left.
And next batter Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a TOWERING DRIVE to right for a 4-3 Yankee lead!

Justin Lawrence, a 6’3 righty, came in to pitch, and a batter later, lefty Austin Wells hit a SHOT to right center fora 5-3 Yankee lead!

7. Bednar the Win
David Bednar, who had pitched a shutout 8th, came back out for the 9th and got 3 straight groundouts for the old ballgame.
