McClanahan & Pen Shut Down Yanks. Tampa 3 NY 0

Jasson Dominguez got 2 infield singles on the night -- but lines out to 2nd on this pitch.

The Yankees ran into another good pitcher on his game. This time it was Shane McClanahan — and he threw a 4-hit shutout into the 7th as the Rays beat NY 3-0 on a Wednesday night at the Trop.

McClanahan out-dueled Gerrit Cole — who absorbs the loss. Yandy Diaz went 4-4 and Jonathan Aranda went 2-3 with 3 RBI’s.

It was a 1-0 game in the 5th, and 2-o Tampa lead in the 7th — when Tampa scored a 3rd run off Fernando Cruz that was charged to Cole.

Cole ended up being charged with 3 runs on 7 hits in 6.1 innings — but pitched better than that line. He struck out 6 and walked 1 — but was the hard-luck loser.

NY only got 6 hits on the evening — 2 by The Martian (both of them infield singles).

The Yanks have now gone 3-12 in their last 15 games.

“We got to keep it simple,” said Jose Caballero afterwards about the Yankees slide. “Trust the room. We know how good we can be and we know how good we are.”

NY falls to 50-42, and are now 5 games back of Tampa, which improves to 54-36 after now having won 2 of the first 3 games of this 4-game set.

1. The Martian Thrown Out at Home in 2nd

The Yanks almost scored a run in the top of the 2nd off Shane McClanahan — when Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe got consecutive 1-out singles — but Dominguez was thrown out at home on a bunt by Max Schuemann.

2. Cole Pitches Great

Gerrit Cole pitched a shutout into the 3rd with 4 strikeouts.

But in the bottom of the 3rd, a 1-out double by DH Yandy Diaz and RBI single by 1st baseman Jonathan Aranda made it 1-0 Rays.

Cole then pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 4th — but in the 5th it was Diaz and Aranda hurting him again — a 1-out single by Fortes, single by Diaz, and double by Aranda made it 2-0 Tampa.

Junior Caminero hit a grounder to shortstop and Jose Caballero threw Aranda out at home for a huge 2nd out, saving a run.

Cole pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 5th, then allowed a leadoff walk to Taylor Walls leading off the 6th. Cole struck out catcher Nick Fortes and left, down 2-0.

Fernando Cruz came in and allowed a single to Yandy Diaz, and a sac fly to Aranda for a 3-0 Tampa lead — the run charged to Cole.

3. McClanahan Pitches Greater

Shane McClanahan is back this year after missing all of 2024 and 2025 with Tommy John surgery and a triceps nerve injury.

He was 11-2 3.29 in 2023, and 12-8 2.54 in 2022 — and looks like that same pitcher again.

The 29-year-old, 6’3 lefty was throwing 98 MPH heat with a Filthy 87-MPH changeup.

McClanahan threw 6.1 innings of 4-hit shutout ball, striking out 5 and walking none to go 8-5 2.83.

4. Tampa Pen Holds NY at Bay

The only other time NY has anything close to a rally was the 7th, when they brought the tying run to the plate with 1 out after singles by Amed Rosario and Dominguez — but never got the long ball.

Cole Sulser, the 36-year-old right hander, pitched 1.2 innings of shutout ball, and 6’6 righthander Bryan Baker pitched a shutout 9th — striking out 3 for the old ballgame.
