Eovaldi Does It to Yanks Again. Texas 6 NY 1

Aaron Judge hits his 15th HR of the year -- a solo shot in the 7th off Nathan Eovaldi.

Will Warren threw his first stinker of the season, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings, including 2 homer balls — but even if he pitched well it wouldn’t have mattered because Nathan Eovaldi did it to the Yankees again.

Eovaldi pitched 8 innings of 3-hit ball, striking out 8 and walking nobody — allowing just a solo HR to Aaron Judge in the 7th — for a 6-1 Texas win at Yankee Stadium on a cloudy but temperate (65 degrees) Wednesday night.

Yerry de Los Santos and Ryan Yarbrough combined for 4 shutout relief innings for NY — that and Judge’s HR was the only good news.

“Just missing with a little bit of everything,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren afterwards. “Stuff was really good again. Had the swing and missing going, 7 strikeouts in 3 innings. Just started getting into some long counts; had some misses; hangs a sweeper to Carter. Just not real sharp with what I thought was good stuff again. It’s going to happen. You feel like the whole time he’ll get in a rhythm and get going. Just had a hard time locating consistently where he wanted to.”

NY drops to 25-12 and despite their amazing record, their lead in the AL East drops to only .5 game over Tampa, who have gone 12-1 in their last 13. Texas improves to 17-19.

1. Warren Had Good Stuff But Location Off; Gets Hit

Will Warren got the first 2 outs of the game, but fell behind Corey Seager 3-0, and fed him a 94-MPH, four-seam fastball that Seager ripped 350 feet into the seats in right for a 1-0 Texas lead.

Warren then worked around two 2-out singles in the 2nd inning, striking out 3 batters.

But Warren got clipped in the 3rd — a leadoff walk to Brandon Nimmo and a double by Ezequiel Duran to plate him made it 2-0 Texas.

Warren got a ground out and strikeout, but with 2 outs, centerfielder Evan Carter hit an 84-MPH sweeper 368 feet to right for a 2-run HR and 4-0 Texas lead.

More trouble in the 4th — Warren allowed a leadoff single to Jake Burger, then walked Andrew McCutchen and Nimmo with 1 out to load the bases.

Duran hit a sac fly to make it 5-0, and Corey Seager followed with an RBI single to make it 6-0 Texas.

2. Eovaldi Kicks Yanks Butt Again

Meanwhile, Eovaldi was kicking the Yankees’ ass again — as he has done so many times in the past — after pitching well for them as a starter in 2015 (and then getting injured in 2016).

Eovaldi just beat the Yanks with a gem of a start last week.

This time, he scattered 2 singles and mowed thru the Yankee lineup pitching a shutout into the 7th. He allowed a solo HR to Judge in the 7th, but then retired the next 4 batters, pitching a shutout 8th for the win. He goes to 4-4 4.15.

“He’s unpredictable,” said manager Aaron Boone about Eovaldi’s strategy on the mound. “Had a good split going tonite, the cutter was a real factor for him, he can really slow you down with the curveball, and he’s still got some four-seam life at the top when he does that; kind of mixes his delivery a little bit; got a lead and ran with it.”

3. Judge Solo HR in 7th

Aaron Judge ripped a 2-0 splitter 400 feet to center with 2 outs in the 7th for a 6-1 game.

4. de Los Santos and Yarbrough = 4 Shutout Innings

Yerry de Los Santos looked great in relief — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 5th, working around a leadoff walk and single in the 6th (getting strikeout, lineout, strikeout to end the threat), throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th, and getting the first out of the 8th before yielding to Ryan Yarbrough. In all 3.1 shutout innings for de Los Santos.

Ryan Yarbrough also pitched well — retiring both batters he faced in the 8th and throwing a shutout top of 9th (working around a 1-out walk).

5. Latz the Save for Texas

Jacob Latz, a 30-yr-old, 6’2 lefty came in for the 9th — walking Cody Bellinger with 2 outs but getting Jasson Dominguez to ground out for the old ballgame.
