Judge & Machine-Gun Bombers Back Schlittler, for John Sterling. NY 12 Baltimore 1

Aaron Judge hits his 14th HR of the year, a 2-run blast to the opposite field in the 1st off Shane Baz, giving the Yanks a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees are red hot — almost as red hot as the Knicks right now — and blew out the Orioles again on an Aaron Judge 2-run HR in the 1st, and lots of machine-gun rallies to back another brilliant outing by Cam Schlittler for a 12-1 win at a beautiful, warm Yankee Stadium on a Monday night.

Jake Bird relieved Schlittler with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 6th in a 3-1 game and got a huge strikeout to end the inning. NY then exploded for 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th for a 6-1 lead.

NY blew it open in the 8th on 3 singles, 2 walks, and a 3-RBI triple by Cody Bellinger to make it a 12-1 game — this after having scored 7 runs in the 8th on machine-gun singles the day before in an 11-3 win over the Orioles.

Tim Hill, Camilo Doval, and Paul Blackburn wrapped up with 3.1 shutout innings.

Before and during the game the Yankees honored John Sterling, who had just passed away, reported in the morning.

The game was played at the same time that the Knicks were blowing out the Philadelphia 76’ers at Madison Square Garden in the 1st game of their best-of-7 series.

“I think he discovered a little something in between — just delivery wise — that got him a little more power,” said manager Aaron Boone about Schlittler. “I think he was having a hard time harnessing it at the level he’s used to. There were a handful of pitches that didn’t do what they were supposed to do. But he was Electric.”

NY improves to 24-11, in 1st in the East by 1.5 over Tampa — still; Tampa is red hot also. Baltimore drops to 15-20.

1. John Sterling Roll Call

The game began with a tribute to John Sterling, who had just passed away, announced earlier in the day. The best of all tributes may have been by the Bleacher Creatures, who chanted “John Sterling” to begin the game in the top of the 1st.

2. “A Judge-ian Blast” Gives NY 2-0 Lead in 1st

And then Aaron Judge gave John a tribute of his own in the bottom of the 1st — hitting a 2-run bomb to opposite-field right that plated Trent Grisham, who had doubled before him, for a 2-0 lead. Michael Kay gave it a John Sterling “It is high, it is far, it is GONE” call.

The Yanks made it 3-o in the bottom of the 3rd off Orioles’ starter Shane Baz — a double (again) by Trent Grisham, and a sac fly by Cody Bellinger.

3. Schlittler Fantastic — Gets Into Trouble in 6th

Meanwhile Cam Schlittler was terrific, pitching shutout ball through 5 innings, scattering:

  • A 1-out single in the 1st,
  • A 2-out walk in the 2nd,
  • Two leadoff singles in the 3rd, but getting a double play, then a strikeout,
  • A 1-2-3 inning in the 4th,
  • Two leadoff singles in the 5th, but getting a double play and a fly out.

Schlittler allowed consecutive 1-out singles, then got a fly out — but walked walked Taveras to load the bases and walked Colton Cowser to force in a run and make it a 3-1 game, with bases still loaded and 2 out.

4. Bird Gets Huge Strikeout to End 6th with Bases Loaded

Jake Bird came in and struck out Jackson on a 2-2 sweeper to leave the bases loaded. HUGE.

5. McMahon & Caballero CLUTCH, 2-Out RBI Hits in 6th

Shane Baz got the 1st out of the bottom of the 6th, but then walked Jasson Dominguez and Jazz Chisholm Jr. before getting Paul Goldschmidt to ground out sending The Martian to 3rd. Jazz promptly stole 2nd.

With 2 outs, Baz threw a wild pitch and The Martian scored, Jazz moving to 3rd, for a 4-1 Yankee lead — huge at the time.

Austin Wells then worked a walk, and Ryan McMahon came up with a Clutch 2-out single to center, scoring Jazz for a 5-1 lead.

The Orioles yanked Baz and brought in Yannier Cano — and Jose Caballero greeted him with a Clutch, 2-out single to right for a 6-1 Yankee lead.

6. Bellinger 2-RBI Triple Highlights 6-Run 8th — All with 2 Outs

Former Yank Lou Trivino came in for the Orioles in the 8th, and the Yankees went to town with a 6-run inning, all runs coming with 2 outs again.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. led off with an infield single, and Austin Wells worked a 1-out walk. With 2 outs, Jose Caballero walked to load the bases, and Aaron Judge singled to left for 2 runs and a 9-1 game.

Next batter Cody Bellinger tripled to right for an 11-1 game. Still with 2 outs.

Next batter Jasson Dominguez singled in Bellinger for a 12-1 game — all off Trivino.

7. Hill, Doval, Blackburn Wrap up with Shutout Ball

Tim Hill pitched a shutout 7th — single, strikeout, strikeout, groundout with a tremendous, Graig Nettles -esg play by Ryan McMahon at 3rd.

Camilo Doval pitched a shutout 8th (groundout, strikeout, double, groundout), and Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 9th (flyout, single, flyout, groundout) for the old ballgame.

The Yankees Winnnnnn!!!

The tributes to John Sterling were all over Twitter — like the time he called himself being hit in the head by a foul ball 2 years ago:

MLB put out a tweet that showcased some of John Sterling’s most memorable calls:
