Yanks Pummel Astros Late for 8th-Straight Win. NY 8 Houston 3

Austin Wells with a HR leading off the 7th to put NY up 3-2, proved to be the game winner.

The front and the back of the Yankee lineup pummeled the Astros in the late innings for an 8-3 win on a Saturday night in Houston, extending the NY winning streak to 8 straight games.

Austin Wells hit the game-winning HR — a solo shot leading off the 7th to break a 2-2 tie. And then NY opened up the fuselage of runs against Houston’s bullpen — which walked everyone in site in the 7th and 8th. NY was primarily led on the evening by the backend of the lineup:

  • Ryan McMahon, NY’s #8 hitter, went 2-5 with an RBI and run scored; and
  • Jose Caballero, NY’s #9 hitter, went 3-5 with a solo HR.

And the front end of the lineup:

  • Ben Rice, NY’s #2 hitter, went 3-4 with a walk, RBI and run scored — improving his average to .337 on the season — 2nd in the American League to Yordan Alvarez (.353).

Ryan Weathers started for NY and pitched well, into the 6th — allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and striking out 4. Fernando Cruz got the win in relief, and both Jake Bird and Camilo Doval pitched shutout innings of relief.

Mike Burrows started and pitched well for the Astros with 5 innings of 2-run ball, but NY jumped all over the Houston pen.

“Patience was the difference tonite,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Just really good at bats; deep counts; really good takes in walking situations.”

NY improves to 18-9 — the best record in the AL and 2.5 games ahead of Tampa in the AL East. Houston drops to 10-18.

1. Weathers Good

Ryan Weathers celebrated his wife’s birth of a child in between starts, and came out and pitched well.

He allowed a run in the 1st on a leadoff double by Carlos Correa and a 1-out single by Isaac Paredes, then retired 11 in a row, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd thru 4th.

Weathers allowed a leadoff single to Yainer Diaz to start the 5th but promptly picked him off 1st.

Carlos Correa again clipped Weathers — this time for a HR leading off the 6th to tie the game at 2-2.

Next batter Yordon Alvarez singled, but Weathers got an out and was relieved by Fernando Cruz — who walked a batter but struck out 2 to end the 6th, the game tied 2-2.

5. Houston Pen Walks Everyone in Site in 7th and 8th

Teng got McMahon to fly out but Jose Caballero singled and Houston went to Bennett Sousa in the pen. It was a mistake.

Sousa proceeded to walk Trent Grisham.
