The Yankee starting pitching staff is absolutely amazing.
With Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon due back soon, and with Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers pitching lights-out ball — Luis Gil stepped up and said “Don’t forget about me” with a masterful 2-hit shutout into the 7th inning in a 4-0 Yankee win at Fenway on a Cold (temps in high 30’s) Tuesday night.
Giancarlo Stanton — Big G — provided most of the offense with a solo HR in the 2nd and a 2-RBI double in the 6th to knock out Red Sox starter Connelly Early. The double scored Amed Rosario and Aaron Judge, who had worked walks before him.
NY picked up an insurance run in the 8th on an RBI double by Randal Grichuk.
Brent Headrick got out of a jam in the 7th, Tim Hill pitched a perfect 8th, and David Bednar provided another non-agita save in the 9th.
“I thought his secondary was pretty good to go along with his fastball,” said manager Aaron Boone about Gil. “Pitched well with the lead; was pitch efficient; and limited the free passes ’til the end there. To get into the 7th inning on a cold night here and get us off to a good start in this series was big. We know how good he can be when he’s right.”
NY improves to 14-9, in 1st by 1.5 over Tampa and with the best record in the AL. Boston drops to 9-14.
1. Big G MOON SHOT Puts NY Up 1-0
Connelly Early is a 24-year-old, 6’3 lefty who came up late last season as a rookie. NY started Ben Rice at 1st against the lefty — and Rice had a tough day, going 0-4 with 4 strikeouts (although he did get hit by a pitch by Early in the 4th).
But Giancarlo Stanton is a righty who eats up lefty pitching, and he ripped a 369-foot MOON SHOT over the Green Monster leading off the 2nd for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

2. Big G 2-RBI Double Makes It 3-0 in 6th
Other than that, Early was tough — and the game remained a 1-0 pitchers’ duel through 5 innings.

In the top of the 6th, Amed Rosario and Aaron Judge worked walks to lead off the inning. Early struck out Ben Rice for the 3rd time — but Big G — righthanded batter — ripped a 2-RBI double to left center and NY was up 3-0.

3. Gil Scintillating
Meanwhile Luis Gil was pitching a gem — getting lots of easy groundball outs.
Gil scattered 2 hits and walk in the first 3 innings and then really started motoring with a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th. He hit the leadoff batter Marcelo Mayer in the 5th but got a double play, then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th on 4 pitches — lineout, foul out, ground out.
Gil got the first out of the 7th, but then walked Trevor Story and Ceddanne Rafaela and was relieved by Brent Headrick. Gil was only at 83 pitches and seemed dismayed at being yanked but he had walked consecutive batters.
4. Headrick Stamps Out Boston in 7th
Brent Headrick — the big 6’6 lefty — came in and stamped out the small fire immediately — getting a fly out and strike out 3rd baseman Caleb Durbin to end the inning leaving the 2 runners stranded and NY still up 3-0. Durbin challenged an 0-1 strike call where the ball seemed low — and won the challenge so the count went 1-1 instead of 0-2.
But Headrick came in with a similar low fastball that Durbin fouled off to go 1-2 — then came back with an almost identical low fastball for strike 3 — again Durbin challenged the call and this time lost the challenge — it was a brilliant pitch by Headrick that just nicked the strike zone.

5. Grichuk Gets Insurance Run in 8th
NY got an insurance run in the top of the 8th — courtesy the beleaguered Randal Grichuk — who was put on the NY roster this year to provide a right-handed bat (over Jasson Dominguez who started the year in AAA).
Cody Bellinger singled with 1 out against reliever Jack Anderson, and Grichuk ripped a double to left center for a run and 4-0 Yankee lead.

6. Hill Throws a Perfect 8th
Former Yank Carlos Narvaez led off the 8th with a single off Headrick — so Boone called for another lefty — Tim Hill — who got groundout, groundout, groundout to end the inning.
7. Bednar Another Non-Agita Save
And David Bednar came in for the 9th in the 4-0 game — not a save opportunity but a 4-0 lead at Fenway is not safe.
Bednar got consecutive groundouts to start the inning, allowed an infield single to Rafaela, but struck out Jarren Duran for the old ballgame.
