The Yankees were leading 3-2 in the 6th inning with Max Fried on the mound on a beautiful, 85-degree Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
But Fried wilted in the 6th, allowing some baserunners and a game-tying double by former Yankee Oswald Peraza.
And then the Yankee bullpen came in and blew the game — Fernando Cruz allowing a walk and 2 hits in the 6th for 3 more runs (2 charged to Fried), Angel Chivilli making his first appearance as a Yankee and coughing up a HR to Mike Trout in the 7th, and Ryan Yarbrough allowing a Grand Slam to Jo Adell in the 8th — as NY got pummeled 11-4.
The game featured more of the slugfest in the series between Aaron Judge and Mike Trout continued — both hit HR’s. Trout ended up hitting 5 HR’s in the 4 games; Judge hit 4. Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice also hit HR’s for NY.
And Oswald Peraza continued to get revenge against his former team, going 2-3 with 3 RBI’s, a HR and a walk. This after blowing the game the night before by dropping a popup in the 9th, and after a big hitting night against NY the game before that.
“He looked like what we were excited about several years ago, and then obviously went through several years of really struggling” said manager Aaron Boone about Peraza. “He’s super talented, always has been. He’s fast twitched, high powered and can run and do all those things, and is clearly in as good a place as he has been in a few years and he really hurt us in this series.”
“The story of the series was that we just didn’t keep the ball in the ballpark,” continued Boone. “And that’s something we’ve done really well up until this series, and they just kept coming at us. Some big at bats by Peraza there, and it gets away late.”
NY falls to 10-9; the LA Angels improve to 10-10. The two teams split the 4-game series, 2 games apiece.
1. Peraza 2-Run HR Puts LA Up 2-0 in 1st
Max Fried got the first 2 outs of the game — on a sunny, 85-degree Thursday afternoon in the Bronx — but then yielded a walk to Jo Adell and Oswald Peraza ripped a 2-run HR to left and NY was down 2-0 just like that.

2. Judge HR Makes It 2-1 in Bottom of 1st
Aaron Judge got a run right back in the bottom of the 1st with a 410-foot HR to center off Angels starter Brent Suter, the 36-year-old veteran 6’4 lefty.

3. Giancarlo HR Puts NY Up 3-2 in 3rd
Suter worked around a 2-out walk and single in the 2nd, but in the 3rd, Trent Grisham walked to lead off the inning and Suter was replaced by Nick Sandlin, a 29-year-old, 5’11 righty.
Grisham was thrown out trying to steal 2nd — but Sandlin walked Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton BOMBED a 446-foot HR to center for a 3-2 Yankee lead.

4. Fried Good — Wilts in 6th
Meanwhile Fried settled down after the 2-run HR in the 1st — and pitched a shutout 2nd thru 5th inning. He didn’t have his best stuff, but it was good enough to hold the 3-2 lead. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, allowed just a walk to Trout in the 3rd, and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th.
Fried got the first out of the 6th — the 8th man he had retired in a row — when he walked Mike Trout and allowed an infield single to Jo Adell. Next batter Oswald Peraza got more revenge — ripping an RBI single to right for a 3-3 tie.

5. Fernando Good But Gets Clipped
Fernando Cruz came in to pitch — and didn’t pitch that badly but got clipped — first a hard grounder to 3rd by Vaughn Grissom that just got past Amed Rosario for an RBI single.

Cruz then got a strike out, walked Travis d’Arnaud, and allowed a 2-out, bloop 2-RBI single to right by Josh Lowe for a 6-3 Angels lead.

6. Rice HR Pulls NY Within 6-4
Ben Rice immediately got a run back for NY — ripping a 405-foot HR to center to lead off the bottom of the 6th off off lefty Sam Aldegheri — who was brought in to face him — to make it a 6-4 game.

7. Trout HR Gives LA 7-4 Lead in 7th
But Mike Trout got that run back — hitting a 446-foot BOMB to left in the top of the 7th off Angel Chivilli (making his first appearance of the year for NY).

8. Yarbrough Yields Grand Slam to Adel in 8th
So it was 7-4 Angels in the top of the 8th when the game got away from Ryan Yarbrough. He got the first 2 outs of the inning, but then hit-by-pitch, single, intentional walk to Trout, and Grand Slam by Jo Adell and it was good night NY.
