Yanks Walk Off Judge-Trout Slugfest. NY 11 LA Angels 10

Aaron Judge's 2nd HR of night puts Yanks up 8-7 in the 7th.

The game went like this:

A slugfest for the ages between Judge and Trout — two Hall of Famers — on a Monday night at a warm (75 degrees) Yankee Stadium.

And the final hero, the beleaguered McMahaon, who has been blamed for just about every Yankee loss this season because of his slow hitting start — working a 9-pitch at bat and not swinging at the 3-2 wild pitch.

On the pitching side — not much to mention. Will Warren was cruising into the 4th until a Jose Cabellero error and Paul Goldschmidt muff of a double-play ball to only get 1 out instead of 2 opened up a big 4-run inning. All the NY relievers got hit except Paul Blackburn, who pitched a shutout 9th and got the win.

Jordan Romano of the Angels had a tough night, allowing all 3 runs in the Yankee comeback 9th, on 3 hits, 2 walks, and the wild pitch.

“As good as his stuff has been all year I felt like tonight it was really good,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren. “His sinker, four-seamer, slider. But they got a beat on him in that (4th) inning. Even from jump — he struck out (Jared) Neto on 10 pitches. They took a lot of really good at bats against him, whether they were fouling it off, getting deep in the count — running his pitch count up. In that inning I though his stuff was really good, but they really stung the ball against him. You have to tip the cap a little bit to them.”

NY breaks its 5-game losing streak and improves to 9-7, in a 1st-place tie with Baltimore (Tampa falls back .5 game). LA drops to 8-9.

1. Judge and Caballero 2-Run HR’s Put Yanks Up 4-0 Early

The Yanks jumped all over LA starter Yusei Kikuchi in the bottom of the 1st — Paul Goldschmidt led off with a walk and Aaron Judge clobbered one to center for a 2-0 Yankee lead. Judge had hit a homerun in the 9th inning the day before — so it was 2 homers in 2 at bats for him.

NY added more against Kikuchi in the bottom of the 2nd — Randy Grichuk leading off with a walk, and Jose Caballero hitting a homer to left for a 4-0 Yankee lead.

NY then loaded the bases on Kikuchi on two walks and an error, but Amed Rosario lined out to center to end the inning. NY seemed ‘this close’ to putting the game away.

2. Warren Cruising Until Defense Deserts Him in 4th

Meanwhile Will Warren was Cruising into the 4th — although the Angels were working him for some long at bats by fouling off pitches and taking pitches.

Still he was Cruising with a 4-0 lead — and it didn’t seem like much when Jose Caballero couldn’t field a hard-hit Mike Trout grounder to start the inning.

On the next play, Paul Goldschmidt didn’t cleanly field a grounder to 1st by Nolan Schanuel — dropping it momentarily and only getting only 1 out instead of a double play.

And both of those plays opened up the inning — Jorge Soler doubled in Trout, Warren struck out Yoan Moncada for the 2nd out — but an RBI single by Jo Adell, walk to Josh Lowe in an 11-pitch at bat, and RBI single by Logan O’Hoppe sent Warren to the showers in a 4-3 game.

Fernando Cruz came in and walked 2 consecutive batters — the later one to Zach Neto forcing in a run to tie the game 4-4 — before getting the final out.

3. Grisham 3-run HR Puts Yanks Up 7-4 in 5th

What a dreadful turn of events — all made better in the bottom of the 5th when Giancarlo Stanton smoked a double off Shaun Anderson to start the inning, Ben Rice walked, and after a Jazz Chisholm Jr. groundout, Trent Grisham launched a 3-run Homer into the warm Bronx night to right for a 7-4 Yankee lead.

4. Trout 3-run HR Ties It 7-7 in 6th

But just when Yankee fans thought the game was at hand, it wasn’t — Tim Hill got the first 2 outs of the 6th, but allowed a single to Adam Frazier and was relieved with righty Jared Neto due up.

In came Jake Bird — and out went a single and 3-run HR by Mike Trout to tie the game 7-7 just like that.

5. Judge HR Puts Yanks Up 8-7 in Bottom of 6th

Not to fear — Aaron Judge came right back in the bottom of the 6th, RIPPING a 1-out line drive off Sanderson down the line and into the left field seats for an 8-7 Yankee lead.

6. Angels Tie It 8-8 Off Bird in 7th

Unfortunately, because Boone had to go to the bullpen early and lift Warren in the 4th — the Yank bullpen had to be stretched — and stretching it was Jake Bird — still pitching into the 7th.

A 1-out single (by Moncada), double (by Adell), and sac fly (by Lowe) later and it was an 8-8 tie.

7. Trout 2-Run HR Puts Angels Up 10-8 in 8th

Camilo Doval relieved Bird and got the last outs of the 7th, but in the 8th got clipped — even though afterwards Boone said he had good stuff.

A leadoff single by Frazier and 1-out bomb to center by Mike Trout put the Angels up 10-8, as the camera panned to Aaron Judge in right.

8. Grisham 2-Run HR & Caballero Double Spell Yank Walkoff

Doval got the last 2 outs of the 8th and Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 9th — sending NY to the bottom of the 9th down 10-8 and staring at their 6th straight loss.

But Jordan Romano was in for LA and he did not have it.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. led off with a single and next batter Trent Grisham launched another HR — this one a line drive — into the right-field seats for a tie game.

Jose Caballero then came through again — ripping a double down the 3rd base line into left, and stole 3rd.

Austin Wells was intentionally walked, which brought up Ryan McMahon, who everyone has been blaming for every loss, although he’s been hitting the ball better of late.

McMahon worked a 9-pitch at bat, when Romano threw a 3-2 slider in the dirt and past the catcher for a wild pitch and walkoff Yankee win!
