Yanks Squeak Out Comeback Win. NY 9 Miami 7

Cody Bellinger with a 2-run HR with 2 outs in 5th to pull Yanks within 4-2.

This one looked like a loss, early — the Yanks down 4-0 with 2 outs in the 5th as Ryan Weathers, Paul Blackburn, and the Yankee defense allowed early runs.

But the Yankee offense came to the rescue with rallies that gave them a 6-4 lead, and then a 9-6 lead after Miami had tied it.

In the end David Bednar got out of a bases-loaded, 2 out situation in the 9th — the tying run on 2nd — striking out pinch-hitter Griffin Conine on 3 pitches for the Agita Save — due in large part by Jazz Chisholm Jr. nonchalant-ing a throw to 1st to start the inning and allowing a leadoff ‘single’ (perhaps due to the wet ground).

On a cold, 50-degree, drizzly, wet Saturday night at Yankee Stadium.

Offensive stars were:

  • Cody Bellinger with a 2-out, 2-run HR in the 5th to pull the Yanks within 4-2;
  • Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge, with RBI singles in the 6th to tie the game;
  • Bellinger with a sac fly in the 6th to put NY ahead;
  • Giancarlo Stanton‘ speed — stealing 2nd after a leadoff walk in the 7th and later scoring on a passed ball; and
  • Stanton’s bat in the 8th — with a Clutch, 2-out, 2-RBI single to put NY ahead 8-6.

On the worrisome side of things was Camilo Doval, who got roughed up for the 2nd straight outing — unable to hold a 6-4 lead in the 8th (single, double, strikeout, 2-RBI double).

The rest of the guys in the bullpen — Tim Hill, Fernando Cruz, and Brent Headrick — held court.

“Kind of a Cold, windy, behind early,” said Manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Just the quality of the at bats never went away. As I’ve said before, it’s a scoring competition, not a hitting competition. So however it comes, it’s about putting points on the board. Credit to everyone. It seems like everyone had a big at bat tonite to allow us to score a bunch of runs.”

NY improves to 7-1; Miami drops to 5-3.

1. Weathers Allows Runs Early in Bad Weather

It was a sunny, 65-degree day at noontime in NY — but the temperature dropped as the day went on and the drizzle and rain came around 4pm. By the time the Yankee game started at 7pm it was cold — around 48 degrees — and wet out with a misty drizzle coming down.

Ryan Weathers took to the mound and struck out 2 of the first 3 batters he faced, but he walked the other guy (Agustin Ramirez) and then allowed a single to shortstop Otto Lopez and 2-RBI triple to leftfielder Heriberto Hernandez and it was 2-0 Miami just like that.

Weathers then allowed consecutive singles to lead off the 2nd — but got a fielder’s choice to put runners on 1st and 3rd. The runner at 1st — Sanoja — tried to steal 2nd but was gunned down by Austin Wells.

With 2 outs however, Weathers allowed a walk, and then an RBI single to Augustin Ramirez and it was 3-0 Miami.

Weathers got into trouble again in the 3rd — getting a high-fly-to-the-wall-in-right by Marsee for the 2nd out (the ball possibly held up by the drizzly weather), then allowing a walk and single, before getting the final out.

Weathers got the first 2 outs of the 4th and was relieved at 88 pitches, NY down 3-0.

2. Bellinger-Blackburn Error Allows Run in 3rd

Paul Blackburn relieved Weathers with 2 outs and immediately allowed a single to Augustin Ramirez, and then a single into no-man’s land in left by Jakob Marsee — with Cody Bellinger sprinting over to pick it up and rifle a throw to 3rd to try and catch Augustin who was going from 1st to 3rd.

The ball skipped just past Ryan McMahon and the backing Paul Blackburn — who had covered too close behind McMahon.

Ramirez scored for a 4-0 Miami lead.

The error was charged to Bellinger but the real mistake was made by Blackburn.

3. Bellinger Pulls Yanks Back with 2-Run HR in 5th

Meanwhile 27-year-old righty starter Max Meyer rope-a-doping the Yanks on 1 hit through 4 innings, with 6 strikeouts but lots of walks.

NY loaded the bases on Meyer in the 3rd on an error and 2 walks — but Meyer struck out Ben Rice and got Giancarlo Stanton to foul out to end the threat.

Meyer got the first 2 outs of the 5th — and the Yanks were at their nadir — down 4-0.

But Aaron Judge ripped a 2-out single to center, and Cody Bellinger launched a 2-run HR to right and just like that it was a ballgame again, NY down 4-2.

4. Yanks Take 5-4 Lead with 3-Run 6th

Miami pulled Meyer after the Bellinger HR, and brought in Andrew Nardi, who walked the first 2 batters he faced (Rice and Giancarlo), but struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. to end the 5th.

But Nardi walked Paul Goldschmidt (pinch hitting for Wells) to lead off the 6th, and was gone for Anthony Bender.

Bender hit Jose Caballero with a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd, and then, after striking out Ryan McMahon, yielded an RBI single to Trent Grisham for a 4-3 game.

Aaron Judge then ripped a single to right for a 4-4 tie.

Cody Bellinger hit a sac fly to left off John King — Caballero sprinting home — and NY had a 5-4 lead.

5. Giancarlo’s Speed Nets Yanks a Run in 7th

Giancarlo Stanton worked a leadoff walk against righty reliever Calvin Faucher in the 7th, and then — after Jazz Chisholm Jr. struck out and with Miami not holding Stanton on at 1st at all — he stole 2nd base.

Stanton moved to 3rd on a groundout by J.C. Escarra, and scored on a passed ball for a 6-4 Yankee lead.

6. Doval Blows the Hold

But Camilo Doval blew the hold.

He allowed a leadoff single to Hicks in the 8th, then a double to Xavier Edwards, struck out Otto Cassie, but allowed a 2-RBI double to #9 batter Javier Sanoja for a 6-6 tie.

7. Stanton’s CLUTCH 2-RBI Single in 8th Puts NY Back Up

The Yanks came right back against reliever Michael Peterson in the bottom of the 8th.

Ryan McMahon worked a leadoff walk, Aaron Judge worked a 1-out walk, and Ben Rice worked a 2-out walk to load the bases.

And Giancarlo Stanton came through — fouling off two 2-2 pitches and ripping a clutch, 2-out, 2-RBI single past the shortstop into left for an 8-6 Yankee lead.

Ben Rice then scored on a passed ball by Ramirez and it was 9-6 NY.

8. Bednar with an Agita Save

David Bednar came in for the save — but:

  • Got Otto Lopez to ground out to start the inning — but Jazz Chisholm Jr. nonchalant-ed the ball to 1st base, allowing Lopez to get on with a leadoff “single” — although perhaps Chisholm was careful handling the wet baseball,

Bednar got a strike out for the 2nd out — but a single by Javier Sanoja loaded the bases — putting the tying run at 2nd.

Agita.

Finally Bednar struck out Conine on 3 pitches (a curve and 2 splitters) for the old ballgame.
