Schlittler Scintilating; Judge & Stanton Go Yard. NY 3 SF 0

Aaron Judge hits towering 2-run HR to left off Robbie Ray in 6th to give Yankees lead.

Cam Schlittler was Scintilating — pitching a 1-hit shutout into the 6th inning and striking out 8 with no walks — and Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton both clubbed HR’s in the 6th inning to give the Yanks a 3-0 win over the Giants on a beautiful, 70-degree Friday afternoon in San Francisco.

And with all that the player that seemed to sparkle above all was Camilo Doval — who struck out the side in the 8th inning on 12 pitches.

This Yankee team looks Awesome out of the gate, the vaunted Yankee pitching with consecutive shutouts to start the season. A team so deep that Jasson Dominguez had to start the year in AAA despite the good rookie year last year and his .333 batting average this Spring training.

“The power — 8 strikeouts there — but being really pitch efficient too,” said coach Aaron Boone afterwards. “Only going 70 with him today. To get into the 6th inning, really set us up really nice, and then the pen was outstanding.”

NY goes to 2-0; SF drops to 0-2.

1. Pitcher’s Duel Early — Schlittler vs Lefty Ray

It was a pitchers’ duel thru the first 5 innings — with Cam Schlittler and former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray both throwing shutout ball.

Ray is a lefty, so the Yanks ran a right-handed lineup, with Amed Rosario starting at 3rd base, and Randall Grichuk starting in left — Cody Bellinger in center.

Grichuk went 0-2, while switch-hitter Jasson Dominguez pines away in the minor leagues (although The Martian is a better lefty hitter than righty). Trent Grisham came in for Grichuk once SF relieved Ray in the 6th inning, bringing in righty Jose Butto. Bellinger moved to right and Grisham took center.

2. Schlittler Sizzles

Robbie Ray was tough — striking guys out and getting easy contact, although the Yanks peppered him with back-to-back 2-out singles in the 2nd (by Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jose Caballero), and a leadoff single by Cody Bellinger in the 4th.

Cam Schlittler was even more dominant — allowing just 1 hit — a 2-out double by Heliot Ramos in the 2nd — but retiring every other batter, 8 on strikeouts through 5 innings.

Cam was throwing his 100-MPH fastball, 99-MPH sinker, and 96-MPH cutter.

3. Judge & Stanton Go Yard in 6th

And then the Yanks got to Ray in the 6th — Paul Goldschmidt — who was so tough against lefties last year — leading off with a double, and Aaron Judge hit a towering drive 405 to left for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

The Giants relieved Robbie Ray with righty Jose Butto, and next batter Giancarlo Stanton smoked an almost identical towering drive 411 feet to left for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

4. Cruz & Hill Perfect in the Middle

Schlittler got the first out of the 6th — a groundout to 3rd — and left after 68 pitches in this his initial start of the year. Fernando Cruz came in and got 2 straight outs to tend the 6th.

Cruz walked Matt Chapman to start the 7th and passed the baton to lefty Tim Hill, who struck out lefty Rafael Devers and righty Wiley Adames, before getting lefty Jung Hoo Lee to ground out.

A perfect inning for Hill, stranding the runner at 1st.

5. Doval Dominates

And then in came Camilo Doval for the 8th — and LOOK OUT. He struck out the side on 12 pitches (Heliot Ramos, Casey Schmitt, and Patrick Bailey) and looked completely dominant in doing so.

6. Bednar the Save

David Bednar came in for the save — he got groundout, groundout, walk to Matt Chapman, and groundout for the old ballgame.
