Just a Few Too Many Runs Allowed in 1st. Boston 6 NY 4

Aaron Judge hits his 48th HR of the year, to make it 6-3 in the 5th.

Will Warren got snake bit in the 1st inning — allowing 6 Boston runs on 5 consecutive hits to start the game, some of them finding holes — and then a HR to top it off — and with Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet pitching, the game looked over.

But Warren hung on to pitch 4 shutout innings, lasting through the 5th, and the Yankee bullpen pitched shutout ball the rest of the way — allowing the Yanks to slowly climb back into it.

NY brought the tying run to the plate in the 8th after Aaron Judge led off with a single against Garrett Whitlock. But Whitlock struck out Cody Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton, and Trent Grisham to end the inning, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th for the 6-4 Boston win.

On a beautiful, 70-degree Sunday night at Fenway Park — a nationally televised game.

“I don’t think anything changed,” said Will Warren afterwards about the outing. “Obviously they came out and were aggressive. Some balls went their way. Narvy (Carlos Narvaez) had the big HR there. I don’t think anything changed much; it stayed the same. I think I executed well. For the most part in that 1st inning they put some good swings on the ball; found some holes.”

Manager Aaron Boone agreed: “Obviously a tough 1st inning. Didn’t really bounce his way. They stung a few balls, but a few that just kind of found holes on him. But buckled down, gave us 5 innings and let us hang around. Really good effort to not let it completely get away.”

NY drops to 83-66 and falls 4 back of Toronto, and are now 1.5 ahead of Boston, which improves to 82-68.

1. Warren Snake-Bit in 1st

The bottom of the 1st inning went like this:

Midway through all that Suzyn Waldman and Dave Sims were discussing on the radio that Warren had to last as long as he could, because there were no days off for the Yanks in the upcoming week, and they didn’t want to kill their bullpen.

2. Rosario 2-Run HR Makes It 6-2 in 4th

And with Garrett Crochet pitching — who came in at 15-5 2.57 and had beaten NY 3 times this year — the game seemed over.

But the Amazing happened — Warren slowly found himself and the Yanks slowly climbed back in the game.

Crochet blew through the Yankee lineup the first 3 innings — allowing just a 2-out walk in the 2nd, and a 1-out double to Ben Rice in the 3rd — followed by 2 strikeouts, of Austin Slater and Aaron Judge.

Crochet struck out Cody Bellinger to start the 4th. The Yanks were down 6-0 and getting blitzed.

But Giancarlo Stanton singled to left, and Amed Rosario clipped Crochet for a 387-foot HR to left center. Boston 6 NY 2. Just like that it was almost a game.

3. Judge HR Makes It 6-3 in 5th

And then with 2 outs in the 5th, Aaron Judge smoked a 400-ft HR to right center for a 6-3 game!

4. Warren Settles Down

Meanwhile Warren worked himself off the ropes in the 2nd, when with 2 outs he allowed an infield single and walk, but got a fly out to end the inning — then worked around a leadoff single in the 3rd, getting a groundout and consecutive fly outs.

By the 4th he was rolling — pitching a 1-2-3 inning — foul out, fly out, strike out.

With NY back in the game at 6-3, he worked around some trouble in the 5th — consecutive 1-out singles — by striking out Rob Refsnyder and getting Carlos Narvaez to ground out to end the inning and his night.

5. Caballero HR Makes It 6-4 in 7th

Crochet pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th and was relieved by Steven Matz. And 1 out into the inning, Jose Caballero ripped a 423-ft HR to left and it was a ballgame again at 6-4 Boston.

6. Doval, Leiter, & Blackburn Hold Fort

Meanwhile the Yankee pen held fort:

  • Camilo Doval pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 6th (strikeout, groundout, strikeout),
  • Mark Leiter Jr. pitched a shutout 7th (fly out, single, doubleplay), and
  • Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 8th (line out, single by Refsnyder, stolen base by pinchrunner Nick Eaton, strikeout of Narvaez, and groundout of Rafaela on a spectacular play by Jose Caballero at shortstop.

7. Yanks Bring Tying Run to Plate in 8th

Aaron Judge singled off Garrett Whitlock to start the 8th — and so the Yankees brought the tying run to the plate — inconceivable in the 1st inning.

But Whitlock struck out Cody Bellinger looking at an 87-MPH slider, Giancarlo Stanton looking at a 97-MPH fastball, and pinch hitter Trent Grisham swinging at a 96-MPH sinker.

8. Chapman Shuts Door for Save

Aroldis Chapman came in and threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — groundout, groundout, strikeout of Caballero for the old ballgame.
