Jazz, Cody, & Judge Get to Bello for Fried & Pen. NY 5 Boston 3

Jazz Chisholm Jr. HR off Brayan Bello in 5th gives NY a 4-0 lead.

Jazz Chisholm, Cody Bellinger, and Aaron Judge stoked the offense while Max Fried kept the Red Sox at bay into the 6th, and the Yankee bullpen of Luke Weaver, Devin Williams, Fernando Cruz, and David Bednar shut the door for a 5-3 Yankee win on a beautiful Saturday late afternoon at Fenway Park.

NY finally got to Brayan Bello, who had shut them out in two prior outings this year — both times throwing 7 innings of 3-hit shutout ball to out-duel Max Fried — a 2-0 Boston win on June 15th and a 1-0 Boston win on August 22nd.

This time the Yanks jumped on Bello for 2 runs in the 1st, another in the 3rd, and another in the 5th on a Jazz Chisholm Jr. homer.

Then Cody Bellinger had the at-bat of the evening — fouling off tough sliders and fastballs from Aroldis Chapman in the top of the 9th before launching a double off the Green Monster to score Judge from 2nd and give the Yanks a huge insurance run.

David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — a 7-pitch save.

“Well he didn’t have the same command that he had against us last time,” said manager Aaron Boone about Bello. “I thought the guys did a good job of really making him work. Took advantage of some walks, he hit a guy there. I feel like we had a chance to break it open a few times there, couldn’t get that knock-out blow. But I thought we had a lot of really good at bats against him. Hits some balls on the nose against him. I just think he was making more mistakes than he did last time.”

NY improves to 83-65, and remain 3 behind Toronto but go 2.5 ahead of Boston, which falls to 81-68.

1. Yanks Jump on Top 2-0 in 1st

Brayan Bello had shut the Yanks out in both prior meetings this year — throwing 7 innings of 3-hit, shutout ball on June 15th to out-duel Max Fried in a 2-0 Boston win at Fenway, and an identical 7 innings of 3-hit, shutout ball on August 22nd to out-duel Max Fried at The Stadium in a 1-0 Boston win.

Not this time.

Bello hit Trent Grisham with a pitch to lead off the ballgame — a 4pm start at Fenway — and Ben Rice hit a ground rule double to right and NY had 2nd and 3rd nobody out.

Bello walked Aaron Judge to load the bases, and Cody Bellinger hit a sac fly to center for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Jazz Chisholm reached on an infield single back to Bello as another run scored — Yankees 2 BoSox 0.

Jasson Dominguez walked to load the bases again with 1 out — but Bello got tough and struck out Jose Caballero and Austin Wells to end the threat.

2. Jazz Drives in Judge for 3-0 Game in 3rd

Bello was sharp after that — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd

But the top of the order got him again in the 3rd — a leadoff walk by Aaron Judge, single to center by Cody Bellinger, and RBI single to left by Jazz Chisholm Jr. — served through the massive hole the Bosox left at shortstop in overplaying him — plating Judge for a 3-0 game.

3. Jazz HR in 5th Makes It 4-0

Bello got the next 3 outs to strand Cody and Jazz in the 3rd, then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th.

The Yankee top of the lineup continued to hit him in the 5th: Aaron Judge hit a 108-MPH ROCKET off a 95-MPH sinker that was snagged by Trevor Story at shortstop for Looney Toones out — the ball pulled Story’s glove back it was hit so hard — and then Bellinger lined out to center.

So Bello had retired 8 in a row when Jazz got him again with a Bomb to right off an 87-MPH cutter for a 4-0 Yankee lead.

4. Fried Keeps Boston at Bay Into 6th

Meanwhile Max Fried was doing his job — shutting out Boston into the 5th. He was shaky early, but got in rhythm as the game continued..

Fried worked around a leadoff single and 2-out walk in the 1st.

In the 2nd Boston ran themselves out of a run. Fried allowed a leadoff walk to Nick Eaton, and then a single to left by Nick Sogard — Eaton tried to make it to 3rd even though the ball was hit right to Jasson Dominguez in left — and was gunned down by Dominguez.

Connor Wong then doubled to left to put runners on 2nd and 3rd — but Fried struck out Ceddanne Rafaela and Romy Gonzalez to end the inning.

Fried then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd, and worked around a 1-out single in the 4th. He was rolling.

In the 5th, Ceddanne Rafaela led off with a single, but Fried got Romy Gonzalez to hit into a double play.

Next batter Alex Bregman hit a solo HR to right — banking it off the Pesky Poll 310 feet away — for a 4-1 game. It would not have been a HR in any other MLB ballpark — but was here — making the double play a run saver.

Fried got into more trouble in the bottom of the 6th — a 1-out infield single by Eaton to 3rd — a great play by Ryan McMahon but Ben Rice couldn’t handle the throw (again), and then a single to right by Nick Sogard put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out.

Pitching coach Matt Blake came out to talk with Fried — but Fried convinced him to allow him to stay in, even at 104 pitches. Next batter Connor Wong singled in a run on the 1st pitch to make it 4-2.

5. Weaver Great in 6th

Luke Weaver relieved Fried with runners on 1st and 2nd and only 1 out in the 4-2 game, and struck out Ceddanne Rafaela and Romy Gonzalez swinging to get out of the jam.

6. Devin Great in 7th

Devin Williams pitched the 7th in the 4-2 game, and got Alex Bregman to fly out, Trevor Story to fly out, and Rob Refsnyder to groundout — a 1-2-3 inning against the top of the BoSox order.

7. Fernando Allows HR to Duran to Make it 4-3 in 8th

Chris Murphy pitched a shutout 6th and got the first 2 outs of the 7th for Boston, and Garrett Whitlock got the last out of the 7th and pitched a shutout 8th — getting out of a 2nd and 3rd, 1 out jam (after a 1-out single by The Martian and ground-rule double by Caballero) by striking out Austin Wells and getting McMahon to ground out.

Fernando Cruz pitched the bottom of the 8th in the 4-2 game — and after getting a flyout to begin the inning, allowed a solo HR to right-center to Jalen Duran, pinch hitting. NY 4 Boston 3. A Nail Biter.

Fernando rebounded by striking out Nick Sogard looking and Massahita Yoshida swinging to end the inning.

8. Bellinger Clutch At Bat vs Chapman for Insurance Run

So it was a 4-3 nail-biter going into the 9th with Aroldis Chapman in for Boston — the former Yankee who has been lights-out this year.

Chapman got Grisham to line out to right and Paul Goldschmidt to line out to center for the first 2 outs of the inning.

But Aaron Judge hit a SCREAMER up the middle that almost took Chapman’s head off — into center for a 2-out single. Judge then went to 2nd on a wild pitch by Chapman as he pitched to Cody Bellinger.

Bellinger fell behind 0-2, but then had an at bat of the game — taking 3 straight balls — one that ‘just missed’ outside and low — then fouling off 3 straight pitches (a slider, a 97-MPH fastball, and a slider), and then hitting a 96-MPH fastball off the Green Monster for a Huge insurance run as Judge came home. NY 5 Boston 3.

Here is former Yank catcher and current YES announcer John Flaherty discussing the Bellinger at bat:

9. Bednar a 1-2-3 Save

To the 9th — a 5-3 nail-biter still. And David Bednar got fly out (of Ceddanne Rafaela), ground out (of Romy Gonzalez), and fly out (of Alex Bregman) — a 7-pitch, 1-2-3 inning — for the old ballgame.
