In a game that mirrored the one the night before, Carlos Rodon pitched a 1-hitter through 7 innings — bettering rookie Will Warren‘s 3-hit gem — and the Yankee bombers kept bombing — this time HR’s by Aaron Judge, Anthony Volpe, and Giancarlo Stanton — for a 9-1 Yankee win over Minnesota on a beautiful Tuesday night in the Bronx.
Rodon withstood a grueling 31-pitch 1st inning when he allowed a single to Austin Martin the first hitter of the game, then loaded the bases with nobody out. But he got out of it allowing just 1 run, and then absolutely motored, retiring 17 in a row until walking a batter in the 6th. He finished by pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th.
Aaron Judge tied the game in the bottom of the 1st with a HR, Anthony Volpe had the biggest HR of the game — a 3-run blast in the 2nd to put NY up 4-1, and Giancarlo Stanton went 4 for 5 with the mightiest HR of the game — a 447-foot Missile to center in the 5th.
“Really big effort by him,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Rodon. “To be able to give us 7 innings after a 30+ pitch 1st inning where it was looking like it’s going to be rough, was really big.”
“Not gonna lie might have been having a panic attack after the first,” tweeted Rodon’s wife Ashley during the game. “But what a boss to go 7 and give up 1 after a 30 pitch first. Let’s go win!”
NY improves to 64-56 and remains 6 behind Toronto and 1.5 behind Boston. Minnesota falls to 56-63.
1. Rodon Throws a GEM
Carlos Rodon did not start out well –giving up a leadoff single by leftfielder Austin Martin, a walk to centerfielder Byron Buxton, and hitting DH Ryan Jeffers with a pitch to load the bases with nobody out.
But he struck out 2nd baseman Luke Kearschall, got 3rd baseman Royce Lewis to ground out — scoring a run, and struck out rightfielder Kody Clemens to end the inning with only 1 run scored.
And then absolutely motored — retiring 17 in a row — lots of easy fly outs, ground outs, and 5 strikeouts. He walked Jeffers with 2 outs in the 6th, then got a ground out, and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th (ground out, ground out, fly out).

2. Judge HR Ties It in 1st
Aaron Judge had not hit a HR since returning from the 10-day stint on the IL due to forearm tightness — but erased that and the 1-0 Minny lead with a 425-foot bomb to center off “opener” Travis Adams in the bottom of the 1st.

Judge would walk the next 3 times up.
3. Volpe 3-Run Bomb in 2nd
The Yanks continued to attack Adams in the bottom of the 2nd — Jazz Chisholm Jr. working a leadoff walk and stealing 2nd, then Ryan McMahon working a 1-out walk, and Anthony Volpe hammering a 386-foot 3-run homer to opposite field right center for a 4-1 Yankee lead.

4. Giancarlo MISSILE in 5th
Giancarlo Stanton hit a MISSILE leading off the 5th — 447 feet into the middle of the bleachers in left — off reliever Thomas Hatch for a 5-1 Yankee lead.

5. Giancarlo 2-RBI Single in 7th Puts NY Up 8-1
The Yanks put the game away off Hatch in the bottom of the 7th.
Paul Goldschmidt led off with a double, Ryan McMahon followed with a single — and then after Volpe flied out and Trent Grisham popped out — Aaron Judge was intentionally walked, and Cody Bellinger was unintentionally walked — scoring a run and making it 6-1 NY.
Kevin Funderburk was brought in and Giancarlo Stanton ripped a 2-RBI single to right for an 8-1 game.

Stanton had doubled in the 1st with 2 outs, Homered in the 5th, reached on an infield single in the 6th, and then had the 2-RBI single in the 7th for 4 hits. The only time he made out was lining out in the 3rd. He is now slashing 12-34-.300 (.376 OBP).
6. Jazz Triple Gets Run in 8th
Jazz Chisholm Jr. led off the bottom of the 8th with a triple to center, and JC Escarra grounded out to score him for a 9-1 Yankee lead.
7. Hill & De los Santos Finish Strong
Tim Hill pitched the 8th — lickety split — 3 straight outs on 9 pitches — strike out, ground out, ground out. He was rebounding from a horrible prior performance on Sunday, when he allowed 3 runs in the 9th to make a 4-1 game a 7-1 game.
And Yerry De los Santos pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — strike out looking, strike out swinging, and fly out for the old ballgame.
