Will Warren & Yankee Bombers Prevail. NY 6 Minnesota 2

Will Warren pitched a GEM.

Will Warren threw a gem — pitching 6.2 innings of 3-hit, 2-run ball — and the Yankees hit 4 solo HR’s as NY beat Minnesota 6-2 on a beautiful summer Monday night in the Bronx.

Cody Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton, and Ben Rice hit HR’s early to give NY a 3-0 lead, and Jazz Chisholm added one in the 8th for an insurance run.

Warren was a strike away from throwing 7 innings of 2-hit, 1-run ball — but surrendered a solo HR to Trevor Larnach on a 3-2 pitch with 2 outs in the 7th, and was relieved by Luke Weaver in a 3-2 game. Weaver got 4 straight outs, pitching a shutout 8th after the Yanks had picked up 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the 7th on RBI singles by Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge. David Bednar threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th, striking out 2.

A neat, sweet win — executed as this team was designed to do.

“Filled up the strike zone,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren. “No walks, let’s start with that. You saw swing and miss with the heater. I thought the sweeper was good. He was on the attack. He fell behind a couple of times 3-0 and got right after it; ended up getting those guys out. Big performance. That’s what it’s supposed to look like right there when you get deep into the game — you set your guys up, and the offense continues to tack on there for some insurance.”

NY improves to 63-56, and remain 6 behind Toronto and pull to within 1.5 of Boston. Minnesota falls to 56-62.

1. Bellinger HR Puts Yanks Up 1-0

Minnesota started 25-year-old, 6’5 right hander and top prospect Zebby Matthews, who came in with a 3-3 5.17 record in this his 2nd year in the majors. He was the #73 prospect in all of baseball entering 2025 according to MLB.

Lefty Cody Bellinger got the scoring going with 2 outs in the bottom of the 1st by hitting a 97-MPH four-seam fastball 375 feet to right center for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Ben Rice and Giancarlo Stanton followed Bellinger’s HR with consecutive singles, but Matthews struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. on two 89-MPH changeups and an 88-MPH slider to end the inning.

2. Giancarlo & Rice Go Back-to-Back in 3rd

Giancarlo and Ben Rice got to Matthews again in the 3rd — this time with back-to-back solo HR’s.

Giancarlo hit a first-pitch 98-MPH four-seam fastball 399 feet to opposite field left center for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

Ben Rice followed by using his QUICK SWING to JACK a 2-2 slider 415 feet to right. Yankees 3 Twins 0.

3. Warren Fantastic, Again

Meanwhile Will Warren was absolutely lights out all night — his 95-96 MPH four-seam fastball MOVING, his 97-MPH sinker SINKING– getting strikeouts, easy fly outs or ground outs, his sweeper SWEEPING, his 85-MPH changeup changing up the pace, and his curveball expertly placed all night.

“He can live in the strike zone with his stuff,” said Boone about Warren. “Both his fastballs really play, and he can work off of that.”

He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st and 2nd, then, after allowing a leadoff single in the 3rd, retired 11 in a row — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th.

With 2 outs in the 6th, Byron Buxton got him with a solo HR to left off a sweeper. That made it 3-1 NY.

With 2 outs in the 7th, he went 1-2 on Larnach, then threw 2 balls and got clipped for a solo HR to right off a curveball. That made it 3-2 NY and Warren was relieved by Luke Weaver.

Warren goes to 7-5 4.34.

4. Weaver Tremendous, Again

Luke Weaver got a fly out to deep center to end the 7th — phew, and then pitched a 1-2-3 8th with 2 strikeouts — after the Yanks picked up 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the 7th to make it a 5-2 game.

5. Yanks Get Insurance Runs in 7th

Zebby Matthews survived the 3 solo HR’s and ended up pitching into the 6th, not allowing any more runs.

Minnesota brought in 31-year-old, 6’3 veteran righty Brooks Kriske to get the final out of the 6th, but the Yanks pounced on him in the bottom of the 7th.

Ryan McMahon led off with a double to right, Anthony Volpe walked, and Trent Grisham singled in a huge insurance run for a 4-2 game.

Aaron Judge followed with an RBI single to left and it was 5-2 NY.

And that was it for Kriske. Minny brought in 35-year-old veteran righty Erasmo Ramírez and he got 3 straight outs — strikeout, popup, strikeout.

6. Jazz Hits Icing-on-Cake HR in 8th

But Jazz Chisholm Jr. got to Ramirez on the 1st pitch of the bottom of the 8th — ripping an 88-MPH cutter 375 feet to right center for a 6-2 Yankee lead.

7. Bednar Finishes

And David Bednar finished things in the 9th — using curves, splitters, and a 97-MPH four-seam fastball for strikeout swinging, ground out, strikeout swinging for the old ballgame.
