David Bednar and the Yankee bullpen made a Paul Goldschmidt solo HR in the 7th stand up for a 3-2 Yankee win on a Wednesday afternoon in Texas.
It broke a Yankee 5-game losing streak.
World Series back on.
Bednar got 5 outs, finishing with a strikeout swinging of Adolis Garcia with 2 runners on in the 9th, and letting out a roar that energized all of Yankee Universe.
Tim Hill and Yerri De los Santos pitched shutout ball in the 7th into the 8th to hold it for Bednar, and before that Mark Leiter Jr. got 3 big outs in the 6th, including a double play to erase a runner Carlos Rodon had left on.
The Yankee first 2 runs came on an RBI single by Anthony Volpe, and the speed of Volpe and Jasson Dominguez, whose double-steal led to a catcher error and 2nd run.
“I was going to take him out, honestly,” manager Aaron Boone said afterwards. “I said, ‘I’m going to take you here,’ and he gave me a look like, ‘No, you’re not’. I said, ‘Are you sure?’, and he was like ‘Yeah, let’s go — I got this guy.'”
NY improves to 61-54, and pull 1.5 ahead of Texas for the last Wild Card spot. The Yanks are 6.5 behind Toronto and 2.5 behind Boston. Texas falls to 60-56.
1. Volpe & The Martian Make It 2-1 Yanks
Texas started Jack Leiter Jr., who came in with a 7-6 4.10 record. The 25-year-old, 6’1 righty shut the Yankees out the first 3 innings, but ran into control issues in the 4th.
He walked Cody Bellinger to lead off, then issued a 1-out walk to Jasson Dominguez aka The Martian.
Anthony Volpe ripped a single to left for a 1-1 tie.

The Martian and Volpe then executed a double steal — and Texas catcher Kyle Higashioka‘s throw to 3rd got away from the 3rd baseman — the ball getting away into left as Dominguez scored and Volpe went to 3rd.

But Jack Leiter got out of further damage — getting Austin Wells to hit a comebacker, with Leiter throwing home to nail Volpe. NY 2 Texas 1.
2. Rodon Hangs In
Carlos Rodon pitched well enough — allowing 2 runs through 5 innings. Rodon:
- Scattered 2 singles and a walk in the first 2 innings, then
- Got into trouble but limited it in the 3rd — when Ezequiel Duran doubled to lead off and Sam Haggerty singled him home for a 1-0 Texas lead. Rodon then walked Corey Seager to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out, but got Marcus Semien to ground into a double play and Adolis Garcia to fly out to end the threat.
- Given a 2-1 lead, Rodon pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 4th on 7 pitches.
- Rodon got into more trouble in the 5th — single, walk, and single with 1 out to load the bases, and sac fly to Semien for a tie game at 1-1. But Rodon got a groundout to end the 5th, leaving runners on 1st and 2nd.
3. Leiter Good in 6th
Rodon walked Wyatt Langford to start the 6th and was relieved by Mark Leiter Jr.
And Leiter got fly out and ground-ball double play to end it just like that.
4. Goldschmidt HR Puts NY Up 3-2 in 7th
And then Paul Goldschmidt came through against Robert Garcia in the top of the 7th, with a 395-foot HR to left for a 3-2 Yankee lead.

The Yanks loaded the bases after Goldy’s HR — a 2-out single by Ben Rice, single by Aaron Judge off new pitcher Shawn Armstrong, and walk by Cody Bellinger — but Jazz Chisholm Jr. flied out to end the inning.
5. Hill & de Los Santos Hold It
Tim Hill pitched the bottom of the 7th with a 3-2 lead. He got the first out, then yielded a single to Duran, and Haggerty reached when he fouled a ball off but his bat hit catcher Ben Rice‘s glove — and Rice was called for catcher interference.
With 2 on and 1 out, Hill struck out Corey Seager and was relieved by Yerry De los Santos — who walked Marcus Semien to load the bases — but got Adolis Garcia to fly out to center. PHEW.

6. Bednar with 5-Out Save
De los Santos got the 1st out of the 8th in a 3-2 game, and then in came David Bednar for a 5-out save.
Bednar walked Joc Pederson, but struck out the next 2 batters.
And so it was to the 9th.
The 9th
Bednar struck out Rowdy Tellez swinging (the hero the night before), and struck out Sam Haggerty swinging.
But a 2-out walk to Corey Seager and single by Marcus Semien put 2 runners on.
Manager Aaron Boone came out to take the ball from Bednar (with Luke Weaver warming in the pen), but Bednar told Boone to get lost.
Bednar went 2-1 on Adolis Garcia, but then threw strikes — 3 straight foul balls — and then a strikeout swinging at a 91-MPH splitter for the old ballgame — as Bednar let out an animal roar.
A gutsy 5-out save by Bednar ?
