The Yanks were leading 2-0 in the 5th, and 3-2 in the 7th — but the bullpen of Tim Hill, Luke Weaver, Ian Hamilton, and Scott Effross got CLOBBERED in the Phillies 12-5 win on a Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
Hill allowed 2 singles in the 7th, leaving with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out. Luke Weaver came in and got a weak grounder to 1st, but Paul Goldschmidt threw it away trying to get the runner at home, and then Weaver gave up a killer 3-run HR by J.T. Realmuto to give Philly a 6-3 lead.
The Yanks came right back to make it a 6-5 game in the bottom of the 7th — one run coming on a HR by Anthony Volpe — on his bobblehead night — and then a clutch sac fly by Aaron Judge.
But Kyle Schwarber hit a 2-run HR off Ian Hamilton in the top of the 8th to make it 8-5 Philly, and then Scott Effross got creamed in the 9th — allowing at one point a single, double, and triple in consecutive order as Philly buried NY.
NY was undone all night by the 1-2 punch of Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber at the top of the Philly lineup. Turner got 4 hits and a walk, and Schwarber got 3 hits and a walk, including two 2-run HR’s.
“Looked like a changeup that just hung up there”, said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about the 3-run HR that Weaver gave up, after having pitched 6.1 scoreless innings coming in. “His last several (outings) have been really solid. Tonite on the changeup to a good right-handed hitter…”
NY drops to 56-47 and is now 5.5 games back of Toronto and 2 ahead of Boston. Philly improves to 59-44.
1. Bellinger HR Puts NY Up 1-0
It all started off so well. Cody Bellinger — batting 3rd because he has been red hot — gave NY a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st with a 375-foot, solo HR off 32-year-old, 6’4 righthander and former Met Taijuan Walker.

2. Wells HR Puts NY UP 2-0
Austin Wells followed in the bottom of the 2nd with a 372-foot solo HR to make it 2-0 Yanks.

3. Warren Pitched Well
Meanwhile Will Warren was looking good — striking out guys, and scattering a couple of walks and singles while pitching a shutout through 4 innings.

But in the top of the 5th, Trea Turner led off with a single and next batter Kyle Schwarber hit a 413-foot HR to right center and it was a 2-2 tie just like that.
Warren got thru the rest of the 5th and got the first 2 outs of the 6th before leaving in a 2-2 tie.
His line: 5.2 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 7 K’s, 3 walks. He stays at 6-5 and his ERA is now at 4.82.
4. Giancarlo HR Puts NY Up 3-2
Tim Hill got the last out of the 6th so Warren was no longer the pitcher of record — yet he stayed on in the dugout watching the game and rooting for the Yankee offense to retake the lead. And they did in the bottom of the 6th — a 2-out, 415-foot HR to center by Giancarlo Stanton. NY 3 Philly 2.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled after Giancarlo’s HR, knocking Walker from the game, and Paul Goldschmidt followed with a single off lefty reliever Tanner Banks — but Austin Wells struck out to end the mini rally.
5. Hill & Weaver Crap Out
The Yanks had a 3-2 lead in the top of the 7th with Tim Hill on the mound when Turner and Schwarber did damage again — with consecutive leadoff singles.
Hill got Bryce Harper to ground out, moving the runners, and Luke Weaver was brought in to try to halt the rally.
And Weaver got Nick Castellanos to hit a weak grounder toward 1st that Paul Goldschmidt fielded — and tried to get Turner at home — but threw it Way wide and away as the run scored to tie the game 3-3. The runner had any throw home beat — Goldschmidt’s only real play was to race Castellanos to 1st. But the error allowed Castellanos to go to 2nd.

It was all neither here nor there as batter J.T. Realmutto hit a 1-out, 3-run HR to leftcenter to make it 6-3 Philly.

6. Volpe HR, Judge Sac Fly Pull Yanks within 6-5
But the Yanks came right back — Anthony Volpe leading off the bottom of the 7th with a HR to left off Jordan Romano for a 6-4 game.

Ben Rice then reached on an infield single, went to 2nd on a balk by Romano, and went to 3rd on a groundout by Trent Grisham, and scored on a clutch sac fly to medium center by Aaron Judge. Philly 6 NY 5.

7. Hamilton Coughs Up HR w 2 Outs
Ian Hamilton got the first 2 outs of the 8th, but then again the Turner-Schwarber duo killed the Yanks — Turner working a walk, and Kyle Schwarber hitting his 2nd HR of the night — this one 380 feet to right for an 8-5 Philly lead.

8. Effross Shredded
Scott Effross got lit up in the top of the 9th — Nick Castellanos led off with a double, then after 2 groundouts, the Yanks intentionally walked Max Kepler and Edmundo Sosa singled to left to make it 9-5 Philly, Bryson Stott doubled to right to make it 11-5 Philly, and Turner tripled to right to make it 12-5 Philly.
Daniel Robert pitched the bottom of the 9th for Philly — and the 6’4 righty with the 1.23 ERA got groundout, fly out, and line out for the old ballgame.
