The Yankees were shutout on 1 hit by Jeffrey Springs and the A’s bullpen on a Cold, Thursday afternoon in the Bronx — losing 1-0 — and it was all Ryan McMahon‘s fault.
McMahon went 0-3 to lower his early-season batting average to .069 (in 29 at bats) and all of Yankee Twitter rained down on him as the reason for the Yankee losing — the team now with 2 losses in a row for an 8-4 overall record.
Springs had a no-hitter going into the 7th inning, and finished with 7 innings of 1-hit, shutout ball — overshadowing an amazing start by Ryan Weathers, who pitched 8 innings of 1-run ball, striking out 7 with 0 walks and 7 hits allowed.
The Yanks have now been shutout for 17 straight innings over 2 games, and some Yankee fans were calling for the breakup of the team — but most of the negative energy went toward McMahon, despite his .250 OBP which isn’t so bad and is 50 pts higher than Jose Caballero‘s.
Katie Sharp served McMahon up for Yankee fans to attack — cherry-picking his bad offensive stats after 30 plate appearances, and not mentioning his .250 OBP, and Talkin’ Yanks served him up for criticism too.
“Command. Good four seam with a really good changeup,” said manager Aaron Boone about Springs. “Stayed very unpredictable with both. Did a really good job of mixing. But really commanded the four seam, in and out, which set up his off speed really well.”
NY falls to 8-4; the A’s take 2 of 3 in the series and improve to 4-7.
1. Weathers Blinks in 7th in Pitcher’s Duel
It was a cold, sunny Spring afternoon at Yankee Stadium — game start time 1:30pm and temps in the high 40’s pushing 50.
Ryan Weathers was hot from the start, with a 97-98 MPH heater, 93-MPH sinker, a wicked 82 MPH sweeper, and 86-MPH changeup.

Weathers pitched a shutout into the 7th in a 0-0 pitcher’s duel with Spriggs — scattering solitary singles in every inning but the 2nd.
Weathers got help from Ryan McMahon, who made a Graig Nettles -esq play in the 1st to nab a line drive.

Weathers also got help from Amed Rosario and Aaron Judge in the 5th — Rosario faking the runner into thinking Austin Wells was trying to throw him out trying to steal — while the ball was hit to right, where Aaron Judge caught it and rifled a throw to 1st for a double play.

But in the 7th Weathers blinked — allowing a leadoff triple to Max Muncy, and RBI single to Tyler Soderstrom to make it 1-0 Oakland.
Weathers rebounded — getting the next 3 batters of the 7th, and retiring the order in the 8th. His line: 8 IP, 7 hits, 1 run, 7 K’s, 0 walks.
2. Spriggs Has No Hitter into 7th
But Jeffrey Springs was better. The 33-year-old, 6’3 lefty used a good 4-seam fastball and lots of off speed pitches with a short-arm delivery to confuse the Yank hitters and pitch a no hitter into the 7th on the Cold, sunny day.

Springs pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st and 2nd.
The Yanks got 2 baserunners in the 3rd — on an infield error by 3rd baseman Andy Ibanez, who muffed a hard grounder while worrying about Jose Caballero running down the line, and a 2-out walk to Amed Rosario — but Springs struck out Aaron Judge to end the inning.
Springs then retired the next 9 men in a row — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th through 6th innings.
3. Yanks Had One Chance — in 7th
Finally in the 7th, Giancarlo Stanton worked a 1-out walk against Spriggs, and Ben Rice broke up the no hitter with a single to right.
Spriggs struck out Grichuk for the 2nd out – but Rice and Jazz Chisholm Jr. (running for Stanton) orchestrated a double steal — putting Yankee runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. NY was a single away from tying the game and/or taking the lead.
But Spriggs got Austin Wells to fly out to left on a 2-2 pitch.
4. A’s Pen Shuts Door
And that was it.
Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 9th for the Yanks — pitching around a 1-out double by Max Muncy — and getting a big strikeout to end the inning with Muncy on 3rd.
Meanwhile the A’s Justin Sterner pitched a shutout 8th — allowing but a 2-out walk to Amed Rosario, but getting Aaron Judge to ground out to end the inning.
And Hogan Harris pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th for the old ballgame.
