The Yankees got to Drew Rasmussen for 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st, tying the score, but left the bases loaded — then only got 3 hits the rest of the night, going out 1-2-3 in 5 of the remaining 8 innings — in losing to Tampa 4-2 on a hot, muggy night in the Bronx.
Rasmussen allowed 3 straight singles in the 1st, then walked home 2 batters — but then settled down to retire 12 in a row, until a 2-out single by Jasson Dominguez in the 5th. The Tampa bullpen of Edwin Ucela, Garrett Cleavinger, and Pete Fairbanks took it from there with shutout ball the rest of the way.
Cam Schlittler pitched pretty good — allowing just a 2-run HR in the 1st, and then got lifted with 1 out in the 5th after allowing a run on a walk and a couple of singles. Brent Headrick came in with runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out and did a nice job shutting the door in that inning, and Luke Weaver did an identical job in the 7th.
But the Yanks just could not muster enough hits or runs on the hot summer night. NY brought the tying run to the plate in the 8th with Giancarlo Stanton up, but he struck out, and NY brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th, but Austin Wells hit a line drive to right center that was caught by a terrific running catch by centerfielder Jonny DeLuca to end the game.
NY remains without Aaron Judge for 10 days.
“Just weren’t able to mount enough,” said manager Aaron Boone about the Yankee offense. “And couldn’t hold them down just enough.”
NY falls to 57-49, and stay 5.5 behind Toronto and 1 game ahead of Boston, which both lost. Tampa improves to 54-53, 3.5 behind NY.
1. Caminero Gets to Cam in the 1st
Cam Schlittler started for NY — his 3rd big league start. He got the first 2 outs of the game but then walked Jonathan Aranda as David Cone discussed his windup.

Cam then got clipped by a 2-run homer by Junior Caminero, 397 feet to left center — and it was 2-0 Tampa just like that.

2. Yanks Get to Rasmussen in 1st — then Not at All
Drew Rasmussen started for Tampa, coming in with a 7-5 2.93 record. The 29-year-old righty is in the middle of his most healthy season since 2022 when he went 11-7 2.84.
Rasmussen pitched well in 2023 and 2024 but only had 24 starts in the 2 seasons combined, missing from July 2023 to August 2024 after undergoing an internal brace procedure on his right elbow. He had 2 Tommy John surgeries earlier in his career.
Down 2-0 after Cam Schlittler allowed a 2-run HR in the top of the 1st, the Yanks jumped on Rasmussen in the bottom of the 1st — with 3 straight 1-out singles, by Jasson Dominguez, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton.
Rassmussen then walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. on a 3-2 sinker for a 2-1 game.
It’s a bases-loaded walk‼️

Rasmussen struck out Paul Goldschmidt — but new Yankee Ryan McMahon came through by working a 7-pitch walk for a 2-2 tie.

Austin Wells however, popped out to 3rd to end the inning.
And after that — Rasmussen rolled — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, until Jasson Dominguez singled with 2 outs in the 5th.
2. Cam Pitched Pretty Good
Meanwhile Cam Schlittler pitched pretty good after the 2-run HR to Caminero, throwing down 3 scoreless innings — getting 3 straight outs after a leadoff single in the 2nd, allowing a 2-out single in the 3rd, and getting a strikeout and double play after allowing 2 leadoff singles in the 4th.
But in the 5th, a leadoff walk, single by Aranda, line out by Caminero and RBI single by Josh Lowe made it 3-2 Tampa and sent Cam to the showers.
3. Headrick Gets Yanks Out of Jam in 5th
With runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out, Brent Headrick, the 6’6 lefty, came in and struck out Mangum and Caballero swinging to shut the door.
Headrick then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th, with another strikeout.
Good news for the Yanks.
4. Weaver Gets Yanks Out of Jam in 7th
Ian Hamilton came in for the 7th in a 3-2 game and allowed a leadoff walk and then a double to Jonathan Aranda putting 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.
But Hamilton got Junior Caminero to ground the ball right back to him — he threw home to nail the runner by 10 feet.
Luke Weaver then came in with 1st and 3rd and 1 out, and struck out Josh Lowe and got a ground out to shut the door.
5. Hill Coughs Up Run, Charged to Weaver
But Weaver got charged with a run in the 8th — allowing a leadoff infield single, then leaving for Tim Hill, who got an out but then allowed two straight singles and a sac fly. It was Tampa 4 NY 2.
6. Brubaker Good Again, Helped by Bellinger D
Brubaker pitched the top of the 9th and looked good again — getting 3 straight outs, helped by Cody Bellinger who made a terrific sliding catch in left for out #1 — after having made several terrific catches the night before in right.
Belli hustled to get that one ?

7. Tampa Pen Shuts Down NY
But the Tampa pen of Edwin Ucela, Garrett Cleavinger, and Pete Fairbanks shut down NY from the 6th inning on.
Uceta retired the Yanks 1-2-3 in the 6th and 7th.
New Yankee Amad Rosario singled with 1 out in the 8th to bring the tying run to the plate — but Cleavinger got Bellinger to ground out, and Pete Fairbanks came in to strike out Giancarlo Stanton.
In the 9th, Ryan McMahon singled with 2 outs again bringing the tying run to the plate, and Austin Wells gave it a ride — hitting a line drive to right center that looked like it might be a double — but it was caught on the run by a sprinting Jonny DeLuca on the warning track for the old ballgame.
