Yanks Cough One Up with 4 Errors, 10 Left on Base. Boston 6 NY 3

Ben Rice solo HR ties game 1-1 in 2nd.

The Yankees blew leads of 2-1 and 3-2; made 4 errors to allow 3 unearned runs; walked 9 batters; and on offense left 10 men on base in a 6-3 loss to the Red Sox on a beautiful, sweater-weather Thursday night in the Bronx.

Lost in the boxscore was a Jazz Chisholm Jr. line drive to opposite-field left in the 7th that went ‘just’ foul by a foot — which would have tied the game 4-4 with Ben Rice on 3rd after a 1-out triple. Chisholm then struck out and the Yanks stranded Rice on 3rd.

In the 9th, Gold Glover Paul Goldschmidt dropped an easy grounder for a 1-out error, giving Boston an extra out, which Roman Anthony took advantage of with a 2-out, 2-run HR to ice the victory.

“Just not a real clean game for us,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “A lot of free bases there. For the most part early in the game we were able to overcome them. Luis (Gil) made a lot of big pitches when he needed to; we were able to get out of a lot of jams. They made us pay in the last inning there with the HR. But just not a great night for us.”

NY drops to 69-58, and are 4.5 behind idle Toronto and now .5 ahead of Boston, which improves to 69-59.

1. Gil Not Sharp But Good

In his 4th start since missing most of the season recovering from a lat strain, Luis Gil was not sharp — walking 5 batters — but good, making big pitches to get out of jams.

Errors (3) and Walks (2) Hurt Gil in 2nd

He was also hurt by 3 Yankee errors in the 2nd — the first one by himself on a comebacker by Masataka Yoshida to lead off the inning. Next batter Ceddanne Rafaela hit a double-play grounder that the Yanks got the out at 2nd on, but Jazz Chisholm Jr. made an error on the throw to first — allowing Rafaela to get on and go to 2nd.

Gil walked David Hamilton to put runners on 1st and 2nd — and the two runners attempted a double steal — Ben Rice throwing the ball into centerfield trying to throw out Hamilton, as Rafaela scored for a 1-0 Boston lead.

Gil then picked the speedy Hamilton off 3rd.

Gil Limits Damage in 5th After Bases Loaded, Nobody Out

A leadoff walk to Roman Anthony and consecutive singles by Alex Bregman and Duran put Gil in a heap of trouble in the 5th. But he struck out Trevor Story, allowed a sac fly to Jonathan Lowe, and got Yoshida to fly out to limit the damage.

Final line: 5 IP, 4 Hits, 2 Runs, 1 Earned Run, 3 K’s, 5 walks.

“It wasn’t pretty tonite but 5 innings of 2 run baseball. He’s making a lot of big pitches; he’s not giving in. But we have to get him better because we know he’s capable of a lot — when he’s filling up the strike zone, and owning his delivery and being better with the strikes. That being said, he leaves as the pitcher of record to go win a game — so he gave us the chance to win the game tonite despite not being at his best; we just couldn’t finish it.”

2. Rice HR Ties Game 1-1 in 2nd

Boston started Lucas Giolito, the 31-year-old, 6’6 righty who was a top starter on the White Sox for many years. He’s having a tremendous year — coming in at 8-2 3.63.

Ben Rice got to him in the 2nd — making up for his throwing error in the top of the 2nd — by first hitting a 81-MPH changeup for a bomb just foul to right, and on the next pitch ripping a 94-MPH fastball for a Missile to right center for a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 2nd.

3. Chisholm Speed, Goldy’s Bat Give NY 2-1 Lead

Jazz Chisholm Jr. ripped a leadoff single off Giolito in the 4th, then stole 2nd and went to 3rd on a throwing error by rookie catcher and former Yankee Carlos Narvaez.

Paul Goldschmidt then singled Jazz home for a 2-1 Yankee lead.

4. Chisholm RBI Single Puts NY Up 3-2 in 5th

And Chisholm was at it again in the bottom of the 5th.

Aaron Judge led off the inning with a walk, but after retiring the next 2 batters, Giolito was relieved by former Yank lefty Justin Wilson to pitch to lefty Ben Rice, who had hit the 2 shots against him previously.

Judge proceeded to steal 2nd, and Wilson walked Rice — putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Lefty Jazz Chisholm Jr. then looped a single to left for a 3-2 Yankee lead.

5. Doval Dinged with Disengagement Violation

But Camilo Doval couldn’t hold the lead. He allowed a 1-out infield single to Hamilton in the 6th, then was charged with disengagement with the batter as he focused on the speedy Hamilton on 1st. Hamilton was sent to 2nd, and Doval lost the strike zone — walking Carlos Narvaez, then allowing a game-tying single to Roman Anthony.

6. Leiter Good; Weaver Off His Game

Mark Leiter Jr. came in to get the last 2 outs of the 6th, stranding runners on 1st and 2nd.

But Luke Weaver was not on his game in the 7th — a leadoff single to Trevor Story and RBI double by Jonathan Lowe put Boston up 4-3.

Weaver got an out, then walked 2 batters, got a 2nd out, and was relieved by Tim Hill who got a strike out to end the inning with runners on 1st and 2nd.

Hill and Yerry De los Santos would combine for a shutout 8th.

7. Rice Triple, Chisholm “Just Misses” Tying It in 7th

Greg Weissert retired Giancarlo Stanton to start the 7th, and was relieved by former Met Steven Matz — the lefty brought in to face Ben Rice.

And Rice promptly hit one in the gap to right center for a 1-out triple.

Then lefty Jazz Chisholm “just missed” tying the game with a liner to left that was ‘just foul’ before striking out for the 2nd out. The Yanks stranded the runner at 3rd as Paul Goldschmidt fouled out to end the inning.

8. Goldy Error Leads to Roman HR

And then Goldy made an error with 1 out in the 9th to allow the super fast David Hamilton to get on.

Yerry De los Santos got a groundout which should have ended the inning, but the extra out allowed Roman Anthony to get up — and he took advantage.

Former Yank Aroldis Chapman pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th for the old ballgame.
