Yankee Bombers Hit 6 HRs & Fried Dominates. NY 11 Washington 2

The Yankees scored 9 runs on 4 HR’s in the 3rd inning to turn the game into an early 10-0 rout, and Max Fried pitched a No Hitter into the 6th — finishing with 7 innings of 4-hit, 1-run baseball — as NY crushed Washington 11-2 on a beautiful 75-degree Wednesday afternoon in the Bronx.

Trent Grisham led the game off for NY in the bottom of the 1st with a solo HR off Nat starter Cade Cavalli, then NY sent Cavalli to the showers in the 3rd with HR’s by Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Ryan McMahon. Ben Rice hit a HR off reliever Shinnosuke Ogasawara. Jasson Dominguez got 2 hits in the inning — an RBI ground-rule double off Cavalli and an RBI infield single off Ogasawara to make it 10-0.

Austin Wells joined the party with a HR leading off the 4th.

After that the Yanks coasted, with Fried pitching a No Hitter into the 6th. The NY offense had 13 hits and 4 walks. Everyone joined the hit party except Anthony Volpe, who went 0-5 with 2 strikeouts — snake bit as he smoked a line drive down 3rd with bases loaded in the 1st, snared by the 3rd baseman.

“It’s just contagious,” said Ben Rice afterwards about the 9-run 3rd inning. “Everyone just feeding off each other’s energy; everyone putting together great at bats; and we were just rolling.”

“That was some banging right there,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about the 3rd inning. “Cavalli came in throwing the ball really well; he’s a guy with good stuff; and they just started not missing.”

NY sweeps the 3-game series and improves to 73-60, remaining 4.5 behind Toronto and .5 behind Boston. Washington falls to 53-80.

1. Grisham Leads Off with Another HR

Cade Cavalli, Washington’s 27-year-old, 6’4 righty starter, came in with a 1-0 2.82 record — and was coming off consecutive quality starts against Philly including 7 innings of shutout ball in his start before last.

But Trent Grisham got to him leading off the game for NY in the bottom of the 1st, ripping a 95-MPH fastball 334 feet to right into the short porch for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

NY then loaded the bases on Cavalli with nobody out — a single by Ben Rice, Aaron Judge hit with a pitch, and an infield single by Cody Bellinger.

But Cavalli reached back and struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Jasson Dominguez, then got lucky as Anthony Volpe smoked a line drive down 3rd — caught by the 3rd baseman Brady House.

2. Yanks BOMBBARD Nationals in 3rd

Cavalli then got on his horse — striking out the first 2 batters of the 2nd and getting a groundout for a 1-2-3 inning.

But in the 3rd the Yankees POUNCED.

Ben Rice led off with a single to right, and Aaron Judge cooked an 85-MPH knuckle curve 424 feet to center for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

Cody Bellinger went back-to-back and belly-to-belly with a 410-foot HR to right center. NY 4 Washington 0.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked, stole 2nd, and was driven in by an RBI ground-rule double by Jasson Dominguez.

Nats Lose their Catcher … and DH

Anthony Volpe lined out to 2nd for the 1st out of the inning, but Austin Wells reached base on catcher’s interference — Drew Millas getting hit on his hand by Wells’ bat. Millas had to leave the game — and the Nationals had to switch DH Riley Adams in at catcher — losing their DH for the rest of the game.

After the delay, Ryan McMahon ripped a 409-foot HR to right center for an 8-0 Yankee lead.

In came Shinnosuke Ogasawara — and he struck out Trent Grisham looking, but Ben Rice followed with a 372-foot blast to right for a 9-0 Yankee lead.

The Yankee offense kept coming.

Aaron Judge singled to left, Cody Bellinger walked, Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked to load the bases, and Jasson Dominguez reached on an infield single, scoring Judge for a 10-0 lead.

Finally the inning ending as Volpe struck out.

3. Wells Joins the HR Party

Austin Wells joined the HR party with a 368-foot HR to right off Ogasawara leading off the 4th. NY 11 Washington 0.

4. Fried Fantastic

Meanwhile Max Fried was fantastic — the 2nd straight start where he has been back to Cy Young form.

He retired the first 11 batters of the game, before allowing a 2-out walk in the 4th. He walked another batter with 1 out in the 5th but had a No Hitter going into the 6th, when centerfielder Jacob Young broke it up with a single to center.

Fried then allowed 2 more singles — to 6’7 leftfielder and leadoff batter James Wood and shortstop CJ Abrams — 3 straight singles for an 11-1 game with nobody out. But Fried struck out Riley Adams and got 2nd baseman Luis Garcia Jr. to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Fried pitched a shutout 7th — allowing a 2-out single to Josh Bell but striking out Brady House to end his afternoon.

Fried’s line: 7 IP, 4 hits, 6 K’s, 2 walks. He wins to go 14-5 3.06.

5. Nat Bullpen Retires Yanks Late

The Yankees didn’t score any more runs — as PJ Poulin pitched around a single and walk to throw a shutout 5th, and Jose Ferrer, Konnor Pilkington and Jackson Rutledge retired the last 9 Yankees in a row — throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively.

6. Blackburn Finishes

Up 11-1, NY brought in Paul Blackburn, and he worked around a 1-out double to pitch a shutout 8th.

Blackburn allowed a solo HR with 2 outs in the 9th to 1st baseman Andres Chaparro to make it 11-2, but got Robert Hassell III to ground out for the old ballgame.
