World Series Back On! Grisham SLAM in 9th Wins It! NY 12 Atlanta 9

It started out just like the disgusting loss of the night before — the Yanks down 5-0 in the 5th and 7-2 in the 6th.

But Anthony Volpe hit 2 (two) homeruns, Cody Bellinger hit a HR, and Trent Grisham hit a Grand Slam with 2 outs in the top of the 9th to vault NY to a 12-9 win on a Saturday night in Atlanta.

Will Warren was cruising into the 4th inning when things fell apart with 2 outs and nobody on — a double, a walk and a 3-run HR by Ozzie Ables made it 4-0; then a single, 11-pitch walk, and infield single put NY down 5-0.

“It was really good until it wasn’t,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren’s outing. “He gets 2 quick outs there in the 4th. (Drake) Baldwin hits the double off him; fine. Kind of loses it a little bit with (Sean) Murphy, where I felt there were some non-competitive pitches there where he walks him. And then he pulls a heater down and in to (Ozzie) Albies, and couldn’t quite recover. A really good night got away from him pretty quickly with 2 outs and nobody on in that inning. Glad everyone was able to pick that one up, and get past it and get ready for his next one.”

NY improves to 54-44, in 2nd place, 3 games back of Toronto and 2 ahead of Boston. Atlanta falls to 43-54.

1. Warren Cruising Until 2 Outs in 4th

Will Warren looked sharp and in was in command, having a good outing — sans a solo HR to centerfielder Michael Harris II in the 3rd.

It was 1-0 Atlanta with 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th when DH Drake Baldwin doubled to right, catcher Sean Murphy walked on 5 pitches, and 2nd baseman Ozzie Albies hit a first-pitch fastball for a 3-run HR to right and 4-0 game.

Warren then allowed a single to 3rd baseman Nacho Alvarez Jr., and walked Michael Harris II in an 11-pitch at bat after getting the first 2 strikes. Harris fouled off 5 pitches.

Allen then reached on an infield single to score Alvarez an it was 5-0, before Warren got a ground out for the final out of the inning.

2. Volpe HR Makes It 5-2 in 5th

Meanwhile 6’5 lefty reliever Joey Wentz opened for Atlanta. He came in with a 6.32 ERA but shut the Yanks out for the first 4 innings.

Down 5-0 entering the 5th, it was looking like an awful night for the Yankees. Again.

But Atlanta brought in 6’4 righty Wander Suero for the 5th, and the Yankees pounced — a leadoff doubly by Trent Grisham, and HR to left by Anthony Volpe — who was mired in the mud with a .212 batting average.

3. Effross Gives Atlanta Back the 5-Run Lead

Tim Hill pitched the 5th for NY — allowing a 1-out walk, then getting a fly out for the 2nd out, when NY brought in Scott Effross to face the righty swinging Sean Murphy and Ozzie Albies.

Unfortunately Effross allowed a single to left by Murphy, threw a wild pitch that moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd, and then allowed a single to center by Ozzie Albies and Atlanta had their 5-run lead back, at 7-2.

4. Yanks Pull Within 7-6 vs De Los Santos in 6th

But Atlanta brought in old friend Enyel De Los Santos to pitch the top of the 6th. De Los Santos pitched briefly with the Yanks last year after being acquired from San Diego in July for outfielder Brandon Lockridge. De Los Santos pitched in 5 games for NY before being waived in August — 6.1 innings, allowing 13 hits and had an ERA of 14.21.

And it looked like he hadn’t missed a beat as:

Exit Enyel De Los Santos — bases still loaded and nobody out.

Rafael Montero came in and got 3 straight outs that scored runs:

  • Trent Grisham hit a fielder’s choice groundout to 1st, but an error by Matt Olson trying to get the runner at 2nd allowed everyone to be safe as the run scored — bases still loaded with nobody out. Atlanta 7 NY 4.
  • Anthony Volpe hit a sac fly to center. Atlanta 7 NY 5.
  • Austin Wells hit a ground out to 2nd for another run. Atlanta 7 NY 6.

5. Bellinger D Helps Loaisiga; HR Makes It 8-7

Jonathan Loaisiga came in to pitch the bottom of the 6th and was terrible again. He allowed a lineout to 3rd, then a liner to left by Allen that had double or triple written all over it, but Cody Bellinger made a terrific catch for the 2nd out.

Loaisiga then allowed a walk, threw a wild pitch, and allowed an RBI single to Matt Olson and Atlanta was up 8-6.

But Cody Bellinger helped with his bat leading off the top of the 7th — hitting a first-pitch curveball by Pierce Johnson 382 feet to rightcenter for an 8-7 game.

6. Weaver Saves Loaisiga

Loaisiga was back at it — being terrible — in the bottom of the 7th, coughing up a 1-out single to Sean Murphy, then walking Albies and hitting Nacho Alvarez Jr. with a pitch to load the bases with 1 out.

In came Luke Weaver to save the day — striking out Harris II and getting Allen to fly out — keeping the game at 8-7 Atlanta.

“Well, Vacation is over indeed,” said Luke Weaver afterwards about the outing. “It’s just kind of a fired-up moment. One where you’re a little bit edgy out there — and you just have to trust it, and be like ‘hey, I either got it or I don’t’ and live to fight another day, and I got on the right side of it.”

7. Volpe HR in 8th Ties It

And that allowed Anthony Volpe to tie the game 8-8 with a 1-out, solo BOMB 411 feet to left center off Dylan Lee in the 8th!

8. Grisham Slam in 9th Wins It

Luke Weaver pitched a shutout bottom of 8th, and so the game went to the 9th in an 8-8 tie.

Atlanta brought in their Ace closer Raisel Iglesias, and:

And then Trent Grisham took a slider for a ball, fouled off a four-seam fastball, and ripped an 83-MPH slider 4-6 feet to right center for a Grand Slam! NY 12 Atlanta 8!

9. Devin Closes

Devin Williams pitched the bottom of the 9th with a 12-8 lead, and walked leadoff batter Sean Murphy on a 3-2 pitch. But he struck out Ozzie Albies for the 1st out.

Devin then allowed a double to Nacho Alvarez Jr. and a groundout to Michael Harris II to make it a 12-9 game, but struck out pinch hitter Marcell Ozuna swinging for the old ballgame!
