Will Warren locked in a pitchers’ duel with Logan Gilbert through 5 shutout innings, allowing for the Yankee offense to arrive like the 7th Cavalry with their BIG GUNS, as NY routed Seattle 10-3 on a HUMID, thunderstorm drenched Tuesday night in the Bronx.
The game was played with dark, ominous cumulous clouds overhead that broke out into a thunderstorm of torrential rain with 2 outs in the top of the 5th — forcing play to stop mid-count with runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs. When play resumed, Warren needed 1 pitch to get a groundout and end the inning.
The Yanks then etched out a run off Logan in the bottom of the 5th on a groundout by Oswald Peraza to take a 1-0 lead, and then rolled out the canon: Giancarlo Stanton with a 3-run HR in the 6th, Austin Wells with a HR later in the 6th, and Aaron Judge with a HR in the 7th to highlight a 4-run inning and give NY a 10-0 lead.
Seattle had not allowed a run in their prior 3 games, having shutout Pittsburgh over the weekend.
The game also marked an Aaron Boone announced move of Jazz Chisholm Jr. from 3rd to 2nd to become the regular 2nd baseman, with Oswald Peraza becoming the 3rd baseman and DJ LeMahieu moving to the bench. The move provided benefits already as both Chisholm and Peraza made good plays in the field.
“Will did a great job of keeping us in the game for a long time,” said Cody Bellinger about Warren’s performance. “Just a good team win. It was nice for the bats to come alive. Big G getting us rolling; Judge doing what he does; and Wellsy with a — that was a sick swing — fun to watch.”
“He was filling up the strike zone, which was good to see; I thought he was sharp,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren. “I thought the sinker was Really good. The depth on some of his sinkers tonite — from the side it was like ‘woah’.”
NY improves to 50-41, in 2nd place, still 3.5 back of Toronto but 1.5 ahead of Tampa and 3 ahead of Boston. Seattle drops to 48-43, 6.5 behind Houston in the AL West.
1. Warren Terrific
What a performance by Will Warren — and much needed too as Warren was RIPPED for 8 runs against Toronto in his last start, and with the recent loss of Clarke Schmidt for the season with Tommy John surgery, the fear was that NY’s starting staff would be in disarray if Warren started to decompose.
But Warren was masterful from the start.
He allowed a leadoff infield single to J.P. Crawford to start the game, but then got consecutive groundouts and struck out Randy Arozarena to end the 1st and was rolling. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, allowed but a 1-out single in the 3rd, and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th.

Warren was matching Logan Gilbert with a shutout into the 5th — then got in a bit of trouble, allowing a leadoff single to Luke Raley, and a 1-out single by Ben Williamson to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Warren got a fielder’s choice grounder to put runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs, and then while pitching to Crawford the skies opened up and the game was halted.
When the game resumed 45 minutes later, Warren needed one pitch to get Crawford to ground out to end the threat.

Warren got the first 2 outs of the 6th in between 2 walks — and was relieved by Tim Hill who got the final out. Warren left with a 1-0 lead and gets the win. His slash line: 5.2 IP, 4 hits, 0 runs, 4 K’s, 2 walks. He is now 6-4 4.70.
2. Yanks Finally Get to Gilbert in 5th
Meanwhile Logan Gilbert was tough too as expected. The 28-year-old, 6’6 righty Ace missed a good part of the start of the season — from April 26 until June 16– with a right elbow flexor strain.
Gilbert was in high form — mowing down the first 11 Yankees in a row — until Cody Bellinger broke up his no-hitter with a 2-out single in the 4th.

Finally, after the rain delay in the top of the 5th, the Yanks got to Gilbert in the bottom of the inning. Paul Goldschmidt lined a 1-out single to left, Austin Wells worked a walk, Anthony Volpe moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd with a groundout, and Oswald Peraza beat out a chopper between 1st and 2nd that 2nd baseman Cole Young couldn’t get a handle on. Yankees 1 Seattle 0.

3. Giancarlo 3-run HR Highlights 5-Run 6th
And then the Yankee Canon arrived, and really belted Gilbert. Aaron Judge led off the bottom of the 6th with a single to center, Cody Bellinger followed with a single to right, and Giancarlo Stanton hit a 401 bomb to left center for a 4-0 Yankee lead. It was Giancarlo’s 2nd HR of the year.

The Yanks weren’t done: Jazz Chisholm Jr. worked a walk and Paul Goldschmidt doubled to right and Logan Gilbert was yanked.
Casey Legumina, a 6’2 righty, was brought in and Austin Wells greeted him with a 414-foot HR to right center for a 6-0 Yankee lead.

4. Judge HR Highlights 4-Run 7th
Aaron Judge made it 7-0 with a 1-out HR off Legumina in the bottom of the 7th — 345 feet to opposite-field right.

Cody Bellinger followed with a single to right, Giancarlo Stanton singled to center, and Jazz Chisholm doubled off the right-field wall — just missing a HR — bringing home Bellinger for an 8-0 Yankee lead.

5. Hill Good
Meanwhile Tim Hill, who got the big out to end the 5th with runners on 1st and 2nd in a 1-0 game, pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th with a 6-0 lead.
6. Hartlieb Has Had Better Days
The Yanks brought Hartlieb in to pitch the top of the 8th with a 10-0 lead — and he didn’t do so well. Single (by J.P. Crawford), RBI double (by centerfielder Julio Rodriguez), and 2-run HR by Cal Raleigh and it was a 10-3 game.
Hartlieb finally got an out — striking out Randy Arozarena — but then walked Jorge Polanco and was yanked for Ian Hamilton.
7. Hamilton & Effross Wrap Up
Hamilton got Solano to ground into a double play to end the 8th, and Scott Effross pitched the 9th — allowing a 2-out walk but getting J.P. Crawford to ground out for the old ballgame.
