Anthony Volpe somehow, incredibly, evaded the tag from catcher Cal Raleigh in the bottom of the 10th to score on a sac fly by Aaron Judge and give the Yankees an amazing, come-from-behind 6-5 win in 10 innings.
The Yanks were losing 5-0 and being no-hit by Bryan Woo in the bottom of the 8th when Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single. Ben Rice followed with a single, Austin Wells drove in a run with a sac fly, and Giancarlo Stanton pinch hit a 2-run HR to pull NY within 5-3.
Austin Wells came up with a CLUTCH, 2-out, 3-2 pitch, 2-RBI single in the 9th to tie the game. Devon Williams was filthy in stranding the inherited runner in the top of the 10th.
Maybe the most amazing comeback win the Yanks have ever had. At Yankee Stadium on a beautiful Thursday night in the Bronx.
It was prophetic that Volpe was the final hero — as he has been in a horrendous slump, and was booed earlier in the game after striking out — then hit a drive to the warning track in right center to end the 9th which could have won the game if he hit it a notch further. But that made him the inherited runner at 2nd in the bottom of the 10th.
“I knew he was at 3rd,” said Aaron Judge afterwards about Volpe. “That was my whole thought going into it; just get the ball somewhere in the air and let 11 take care of the rest.”
“Just impressive,” added Judge. “What a great slide. Nobody else I want at 3rd in a situation like that besides Volpe.”
“That was sick,” said Austin Wells on Volpe’s slide. “Totally went around him, got his hand in there. Yea that was a great slide. It was sick.”
NY sweeps the 3-game series and improves to 52-41, pulling to within 2 of idle Toronto. Seattle falls to 48-45.
1. Woo Wows ‘Em
Bryan Woo made the All Star team this year — and looked every bit an All Star. The 25-year-old, 6’2 righthander is of Korean descent but was born in Oakland, California and was drafted by Seattle in the 6th round of the 2021 draft.
Woo came in with an 8-4 2.77 record in this his 3rd year with the Mariners. He was 9-3 2.89 last year.
Woo walked the first 2 batters of the game — Jasson Dominguez and Trent Grisham — but struck out Judge and got Cody Bellinger to hit into a double play.
And then he simply mowed the Yankees down — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd thru the 7th — using 80 percent fast balls to get lots of fly outs and pop ups and ground outs and some strike outs — he struck out 5.

“Guys were having good at bats all night — just kind of hitting it right at guys or just missing balls. But Woo is one of the best pitchers in the game for a reason,” said Aaron Judge about Woo. “He commands both fastballs well. Works his slider all over the plate.”
“He’s been doing it since he got called up. That’s just his pitch. Good feel for both of them. He’s got a lower slot. He’s got good feel for it; good placement for it. And I think what makes it tough is that he works the 4-seamer and the sinker and you think you’re getting ready for the sinker and it’s a 4-seamer and vice versa. He’s been giving us fits for quite a few years so we’re happy to steal that win there.”
2. Stroman Good
Meanwhile Marcus Stroman was good in his 3rd start since returning from the long IL stint due to knee soreness that comes from an ACL injury years ago.
The Mariners got to Stroman for a run in the 2nd with a 1-out walk, single by Canzone and RBI single by Cole Young — but Stroman rope-a-doped the situation by getting a strike out and ground out.

Stroman pitched a shutout 3rd, striking out Cal Raleigh in an 11-pitch at bat.

The Mariners made it 2-0 in the 4th on a 1-out ground-rule double by Canzone and a 2-out RBI single by Mastrobuoni.
But Stroman pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 5th and left trailing 2-0. His line: 5 IP, 6 hits, 2 runs, 3 K’s, 2 walks. He did good.
3. Beeter Beaten by 2-Out, 2-Strike, 3-Run HR
Clayton Beeter relieved Stroman for the 6th, and pitched a shutout inning — and giving everyone what they had been waiting for when he faced Mastrobuoni with 2 outs and a runner on 1st.
Beeter got Mastrobuoni to “pop out” to shortstop.
After walking the leadoff batter in the 7th, Beeter got 2 fly outs. The Yanks were down 2-0 and it seemed Beeter was keeping NY in the game.
But Beeter walked Randy Arozarena, and then, after going 0-2 on Jorge Polanco, threw an 87-MPH slider over the plate and Polanco ripped it 366 feet to left for a 3-run HR and 5-0 Seattle lead. It seemed like ‘ballgame’.

4. Brubaker & Hamilton Hold ‘Em
With NY down 5-0, JT Brubaker pitched a shutout 8th — so that was nice.
With NY down 5-3, Ian Hamilton pitched a shutout top-of-9th — giving NY a final chance.
5. Jazz Breaks Up No-No; Giancarlo Bomb
Woo retired everybody in a row — 21 in all after the 2 walks in the 1st — until the bottom of the 8th, when Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single.

That drove Woo from the game at 103 pitches. Seattle brought in 6’1 righty Matt Brash, who struck out Volpe.
Giancarlo Stanton pinch hit for Jorbit Vivas, and ripped a 97-MPH sinker 415 feet to opposite-field right center for a 5-3 game!

6. Wells CLUTCH Hit Ties It with 2 Outs in 9th
And then came the bottom of the 9th — the Yanks’ last chance, down 5-3.
Seattle Ace reliever Andres Munoz was in — and Trent Grisham (who else?) led off with a tough at bat and single to right on a 3-2 pitch.
That brought the tying run to the plate, and everyone was standing at Yankee Stadium as Aaron Judge stepped up. But Judge flied out to center.
Munoz lost the strike zone — and went 3-1 on Cody Bellinger before Cody singled to right moving Grisham to 2nd. The Yanks had the tying run on and the winning run at the plate in Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Chisholm however flied out to right and NY was down to its final out.
But Ben Rice — down 0-2 in the count — worked a walk as Munoz threw 4 straight balls.
Austin Wells stepped up — with the tying run on 2nd — and worked the count 3-2 before ripping a CLUTCH single to right for a tie game 5-5 !

“I think I was up 6th that inning; so I had 5 great at bats before me,” said Austin Wells afterwards. “Those guys gave me a lot of confidence and trust that I was going to get a pitch to hit. Was just looking for a pitch over, and made a good swing on it.”
Anthony Volpe hit a drive to right center — that looked like it might win the game when he hit it — but it was a fly out. This would prove prophetic.
Yanks Catch Munoz Tipping Pitches
Andres Munoz not only lost the strike zone, he was apparently tipping pitches in the 9th — the Yankees knew when he would throw a slider and therefore also knew what pitches would either be a fastball or a curve. Once Trent Grisham got to 2nd — he was able to relay calls to the batter as Cody Bellinger on 1st saw what pitch was coming. This is highlighted in this amazing video by Jon Boy:

When asked about it, Aaron Boone said he saw nothing, he heard nothing, he knew nothing about it.
Aaron Boone was asked who spotted that Andrés Muñoz was tipping his sliders last night?
“Muñoz was? I don’t know.”
Follow-up: You’re saying that that didn’t happen?
Boone: “I don’t know anything about that.” pic.twitter.com/JcEzPaCDj9

7. Devon Filthy in 10th
Devon Williams was absolutely filthy in the top of the 10th, stranding the inherited runner on 2nd — getting strike out, ground out, and ground out.

8. Volpe Slide on Judge Sac Fly Wins It
And then to the bottom of the 10th, with Volpe the inherited runner on 2nd and lefty Gabe Speier pitching for Seattle.
Oswald Peraza popped up a bunt attempt to 3rd and did not move the runner. The Yanks pinch hit Paul Goldschmidt for The Martian (as there was a lefty pitching and Dominguez is better against righties) — and the Mariners intentionally walked Goldy.
And then Trent Grisham — of course — worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases with 1 out. A Huge at bat by Grisham.
That brought Aaron Judge to the plate — and Judge took a ball, fouled off a 94-MPH fastball, then hit a fly to medium center, where Julio Rodriguez made the catch and an Awesome throw home — but Volpe evaded the tag for the old ballgame!
