Ump Brian Walsh Beats the Yankees. Houston 8 NY 7

Austin Wells hits 2-run HR in 4th putting Yanks up 3-0. Wells went 3-4 on the day with a double as well.

They say if the ump is calling a good game — you should not know his name.

Brian Walsh was the home plate umpire for this game between the Yankees and Astros on a Wednesday night in Houston.

And Brian Walsh KILLED the Yankees — and Devin Williams and Jazz Chisholm Jr. in particular.

He called strike 3 a ball 4 on Devin Williams with 2 outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th, which put Houston ahead 5-4 and sent Williams from the game. Williams was thrown out by Walsh too after he had choice words for him when walking off the field — feeling Walsh had robbed him of 4 calls in the inning.

Walsh then called a balk on reliever Camilo Doval to score a run when Doval was having trouble with the PitchCom — which the Yanks strenuously objected to.

And finally the game ended when Jazz Chisholm Jr. took ball 4 on a 3-2 pitch in the top of the 9th of an 8-7 game — which would have put the super-fleet Chisholm on base and brought up Giancarlo Stanton — but Walsh called it Strike 3 for the ballgame — causing Chisholm and the Yanks to erupt in complaint. Manager Aaron Boone had already been tossed in the bottom of the 8th.

According to Umpire Scorecards, Walsh had a very subpar night and missed 16 ball-strike calls — 12 of which went against the Yankees, favoring Houston by 1.4 runs but really all 4 runs in the 8th would have never scored had he done a better job. Others had him for 21 blown calls —16 against the Yanks.

It all started out so well for NY — with Will Warren pitching great and NY jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the 5th and 4-1 lead in the 6th. But Warren faltered in the 6th, enabling Houston to climb within 4-3, and Luke Weaver allowed a game-tying run in the 7th.

That set the scene for Brian Walsh getting Houston 4 runs in the 8th.

Cody Bellinger hit a dramatic 3-run HR in the 9th to pull NY close.

Ump Brian Walsh in the Spotlight

“He definitely missed 4, which is what I told him, and he threw me out for it,” said Devin Williams about ump Brian Walsh. “When you’re making good pitches — which I was — not getting those calls really changes the course of an at bat. Obviously (Carlos) Correa hit the double so I had my back to the wall right away. I made some really good pitches to (Jesus) Sanchez but he missed 2 in THAT at bat.”

“It’s just ridiculous — to have the inning I had and then Jazz got the bat taken out of his hands on a pitch that was a lot further from the zone then pitches I was making,” continued Devin. “I’ve never been ejected in my career.”

NY drops to 77-62, and are now 3.5 behind Toronto and tied with Boston. Houston improves to 76-72, in 1st in the AL West by 4 over Seattle.

1. Big G Hits One Over Train Tracks for 1-0 Lead

The Yanks were up against Jason Alexander, who threw 6 innings of 1-hit shutout ball against them 3 weeks ago in a Houston win.

This time the Yanks got some runs off him — starting with a Giancarlo Stanton Monster 403-foot blast over the choo choo train tracks in left leading off the 2nd for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

2. Wells HR Puts NY Up 3-0 in 4th

Jason Alexander pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd, but Ben Rice ripped a single to right with 1 out in the 4th, and Austin Wells followed with a 355-foot HR to opposite-field left for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

3. Warren Great Into the 5th

Meanwhile Will Warren was great for NY — aggressively attacking the strike zone and pitching a shutout into the 5th. He pitched around a 1-out single in the 1st, then retired 8 in a row — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd and 3rd.

Warren allowed a ripping 1-out single to Yordan Alvarez leading off the 4th, but got Jose Altuve to ground into a double play an struck out Carlos Correa to keep the score 3-0 heading into the 5th.

In the 5th, Warren ran into some trouble — a 1-out double by Diaz, single by 1st baseman Victor Caratini, and sac fly by Ramon Urias made it a 3-1 game.

4. Wells Double, McMahon Sac Fly Puts NY Up 4-1 in 5th

But NY came right back to make it 4-1 off lefty reliever Steven Okert in the top of the 6th. A leadoff single by lefty Ben Rice, and double to left by next batter Austin Wells put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.

Okert struck out Anthony Volpe swinging on a 2-2 slider, but Ryan McMahon came through with a liner to medium center that was just deep enough to score the run on a sac fly. NY 4 Houston 1.

5. Warren Tires in 6th

But Warren got into more trouble in the bottom of the 6th — a leadoff HR by Jeremy Pena made it 4-2, then a double to left by Yordan Alvarez sent Warren to the showers.

Fernando Cruz came in and threw a wild pitch — sending Alvarez to 3rd, from where he scored on a Jose Altuve groundout to 3rd. NY 4 Houston 3.

6. Astros Tie It Off Weaver in 7th

And then the Astros tied it off Luke Weaver in the 7th — who allowed a leadoff single to Caratini, then struck out Urias and got Trammell to fly out to center.

But with 2 outs, Weaver walked Jeremy Pena, and Yordan Alvarez singled to left over Giancarlo Stanton’s head — the pinch-runner Jacob Melton scoring on an error on the throw in from Stanton.

7. Ump Brian Walsh Gives Houston 4 Runs in 8th

With the score tied 4-4, Devin Williams came in to pitch the bottom of the 8th — and allowed a leadoff double to Carlos Correa.

Then ump Brian Walsh took over.

  • Devin walked Jesus Sanchez — with the 1-1 pitch appearing to be a strike — but called a ball.
  • Devin then struck out Yandy Diaz in a 9-pitch at bat — all strikes were swinging.
  • Devin then walked Christian Walker — not getting a call on the edge of the strike zone on a 3-2 pitch.
  • Devin then struck out Ramon Urias swinging — all strikes coming on foul balls or swinging.
  • And then with bases still loaded, and 2 outs — Devin walked Taylor Trammell — on 5 pitches — 2 of the pitches appearing to hit the edge of the strike zone. A run came in — and it was 5-4 Houston.

Boone relieved Devin Williams — who was tossed by Ump Brian Walsh as he had choice words for Walsh as he walked to the dugout.

Aaron Boone went berserk and was tossed by Walsh.

Camilo Doval came in and allowed an RBI single to Pena for a 6-4 Houston lead.

Ump Brian Walsh then called Doval for a balk — when Doval signaled that he was having trouble with the PitchCom. That scored a run and it was 7-4 Houston.

Doval then threw a wild pitch scoring another run — Houston 8 NY 4.

8. Bellinger 3-Run HR in 9th Brings Yanks Within 8-7

Bryan Abreu pitched the 9th for Houston — the game seemingly lost with Houston up 8-4.

But Ryan McMahon hit a 1-out single, and Aaron Judge ripped a 2-out single to center.

Cody Bellinger then woke everyone back up with a 3-run HR just over the wall in right — Houston 8 NY 7 !

9. Ump Brian Walsh Wins It for Houston

Jazz Chisholm Jr. came up as the tying run — with Giancarlo Stanton on deck.

Chisholm worked the count to 3-2, then took ball 4 just outside — but ump Brian Walsh called it strike 3 for the old ballgame.

Etcetera

It was reported afterwards by IB THE GAMBLER that ump Brian Walsh had public posts on Facebook that showed him as a Dodger fan who loved the Red Sox too; and allegedly deleted his Facebook account after the game.
