Trevor Rogers Out-Duels Will Warren. Baltimore 4 NY 2

The Orioles’ young 6’6 lefty ace Trevor Rogers outdueled Will Warren — pitching a shutout for 6 innings including a no hitter through 5 — in leading Baltimore to a 4-2 win on a hot and dry and beautiful Friday night at Camden Yards — game-time starting temperature 90 degrees.

Rogers went to 9-2 1.35 on the season.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a 2-run HR off reliever Dietrich Enns in the 7th to make it a 3-2 game, and NY was within a single of tying the game in the 8th with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, down 4-2 — but Giancarlo Stanton grounded out to 3rd.

“I thought he threw the ball,” said manager Aaron Boone about Rogers. “We didn’t pressure him a lot. We ran his count up — we made him work. I thought he was getting some pitches there – especially the glove side. But just obviously had a hard time mounting much against him. We did get him out of there though, enabled us to kind of climb back in it.”

NY falls to 86-68, and remain 3 behind Toronto which also lost, and 2 ahead of Boston, which won.

1. Rogers Throws No-Hitter through 5

Trevor Rogers burst on the scene in 2021 with the Miami Marlins when he made the NL All Star team as a rookie, and finished 2nd in Rookie of Year voting with a 7-8 2.64 record. He had been the 13th overall pick of the 2017 June draft by Miami.

But Rogers had an awful 4-11 5.47 year in 2022 and then suffered a series of injuries in 2023 and 2024 that derailed him. He was 2-9 4.53 for Miami last year when they traded him to Baltimore for two top young hitters — Kyle Stowers (who made the All Star team this year for Miami and is currently slashing 25-73-.288) and  Connor Norby (now Miami’s 3rd baseman currently slashing 6-31-.252).

Miami got what they needed — hitters — and Baltimore got what they needed — a great young pitcher under control for a while contract-wise.

Rogers has been lights’ out this year and was lights’ out in this game — pitching a no-hitter through 5 and a shutout through 6.

Rogers used a slider, sweeper, sinker, 94-MPH four-seam fastball mix to stifle NY.

He struck out 2 in the 1st (including Aaron Judge on a 3-2 pitch for called strike 3 that Judge felt was ball 4 — and Umpire Scorecards later agreed), and struck out 2 in the 2nd (including Giancarlo Stanton).

The Yanks almost got to him in the 3rd — when Anthony Volpe hit one to the wall in center with 1 out — caught on the run in the warning track by Colton Cowser.

With 2 outs, Austin Wells worked a walk and Paul Goldschmidt was hit by a pitch, but Rogers struck out Judge for the 2nd time.

Big G worked a 1-out walk in the 4th — but next batter Amed Rosario hit into a double play so the game stayed 1-0 Baltimore.

Austin Wells finally broke up the no hitter with a single leading off the 6th — and with 1 out Aaron Judge ripped a liner to left that had single written all over it — but Dylan Beaver made a terrific catch sprinting in.

2. Warren Great

Meanwhile the good news for NY was that Will Warren pitched great — coming off a poor start against Boston (his 2nd poor start against Boston in the last month, amidst several good starts vs other teams).

Warren pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, striking out 2 — but allowed a leadoff HR to left center by Ryan Mountcastle leading off the 2nd to give Baltimore a 1-0 lead.

Warren then got in and out of trouble in the 2nd — getting 2 groundouts, but allowing a 2-out single to catcher Samuel Basallo, and a double to Colton Cowser — putting runners on 2nd and 3rd.

In a key turning point of the game — Warren got Coby Mayo on a flyout to end the threat and keep the score 1-0.

Warren got help from Aaron Judge in the 3rd — a diving catch in right for the 2nd out of the inning.

Warren then pitched around a 2-out walk in that 3rd and threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th — matching Rogers in a pitchers’ duel.

In the bottom of the 6th though Warren was hurt by his defense — including his own defense as he made an error dropping a comebacker to him to start the inning — allowing Jake Westburg to get on.

Next batter Gunnar Henderson reached on an infield single — Jazz Chisholm Jr. throwing the ball in the dirt at 1st for an error as Westbrook went to 3rd.

Ryan Mountcastle then hit a sac fly for a 2-0 Baltimore lead.

Warren walked Beavers and was relieved by Fernando Cruz — who walked J Jackson to load the bases with 1 out.

Basallo then hit a grounder to 2nd that the Yanks couldn’t quite turn the double play on — as a run scored to make it 3-0 — before Cruz got the final out on a groundout.

Warren’s line: 5.1 IP, 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 earned run, 4 K’s, 1 walk. He loses to go 8-8 4.35.

3. Jazz HR in 7th Makes it 3-2 Game

The Yanks were down 3-0 and seemingly out of it in a fast-moving game on the hot (but dry) Baltimore night when Dietrich Enns came in to pitch the 7th with Rogers at 106 pitches.

Enns got the first 2 outs of the inning — but Austin Slater — who played with Orioles briefly in 2024 after a career in San Fran — singled.

Next batter Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a 2-run HR to right for a 3-2 game just like that.

4. Hill Nipped in 8th for a Run

Fernando Cruz got the first out of the bottom of the 7th — and lefty Tim Hill came in to pitch to lefties Jackson Holiday and Gunnar Henderson.

Hill got Holiday to ground out to 2nd, but righty Jake Westbrook reached on an infield single to 3rd, and lefty Gunnar Henderson inside-outed a 2-out double just fair down the line to opposite field left for an RBI double. Baltimore 4 NY 2.

Camilo Doval came in and got Ryan Mountcastle to fly out, ending the inning.

6. Giancarlo Had Chance to Tie It in 8th

The Yanks had a chance to tie in the top of the 8th — Ben Rice working a 1-out walk against former Met Rico Garcia, and Aaron Judge singling to left.

Cody Bellinger grounded out — moving the runners into scoring position at 2nd and 3rd.

Giancarlo Stanton stepped up — with a chance to tie the game with a single.

But he hit a 2-1, 94-MPH fastball to 3rd for a groundout.

And that was it for the Yanks — Baltimore’s ace reliever Keegan Akin pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — fly out strike out, and strike out for Jazz Chisholm for the old ballgame.
