Schlittler Matches Joe Ryan, But De los Santos Blinks. Minnesota 4 NY 1

Cody Bellinger homers off Joe Ryan in the 3rd -- the only run the Yanks would get.

Cam Schlittler threw down another good start — matching the great Joe Ryan through 5 innings in a 1-1 game — but Yerry De los Santos came in for the 6th and blinked, allowing 2 infield singles and a double to the gap for a 3-1 game and that spelled doom for the Yankees.

Ryan left with 2 outs in the 7th, and 34-year-old veteran righty Justin Topa from Binghamton NY shut the Yanks down the last 2 innings for a 4-1 Minnesota win on a thunderstorm drenched evening in the Bronx — the game delayed almost 2 hours due to rain.

Cody Bellinger got the Yanks their only run — a solo HR against Joe Ryan to give NY a 1-0 lead in the 3rd.

“I thought he was really good,” said manager Aaron Boone about Schlittler. “That fastball is always good — but man… Obviously it plays up in the zone but he’s really good down with it, just with that angle that he creates, and then he can work the secondary off of that. He had a couple of good sequences where he popped that low strike with the heater, then breaking ball off it where he gets some chase.”

“First 3 innings, just kind of cruising through — I think he was 34 pitches through 3,” continued Boone. “They made him work those next 2 innings quite a bit, but he was still making pitches. I thought he threw well.”

NY falls to 64-57 but remains 6 behind Toronto and 1.5 behind Boston who both lost. Minnesota improves to 57-63.

1. Schlittler Good

Good news for NY is that Cam Schlittler was good again — using his 98- to 100-MPH fastball and off speed pitches to mow down Minnesota. He blew through the first 3 innings, retiring the first 9 batters of the game in a row.

Cam walked Larnach leading off the 4th however, and then gave up a double to Byron Buxton to left. A groundout by Keaschall scored the only run Cam allowed.

But with a runner on 3rd and 1 out, Schlittler struck out Clemens for the 2nd out, walked Jeffers, then got Wallner to pop out to end the inning.

Schlittler struck out 2 more batters in the 5th, sandwiching a 1-out single — then got a fly out to end his evening at 86 pitches.

2. Bellinger Blast Puts NY Up 1-0

Joe Ryan started for Minnesota, and he is as tough as they come — entering with an 11-5 2.79 record. The Yanks put some baserunners on him with a leadoff single in the 1st and leadoff single and 2-out walk in the 2nd, but he got tough each time to strand the runners.

Cody Bellinger got to Ryan in the 3rd with a 2-out HR to right for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

3. Ryan Tough

But after the Bellinger homer, Ryan got tougher — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th, allowing just a 1-out walk in the 6th, and the first out of the 7th before yielding a double to Anthony Volpe.

Ryan got a ground out then was relieved by Kyle Funderburk who struck out Austin Wells looking to end the 7th with Volpe on 3rd in a 4-1 game.

4. De los Santos Blinks

Yerry De los Santos came in for the 6th and blinked — a sharp liner in the hole at shortstop that Volpe made a great play on to stop but couldn’t get the speedy Byron Buxton at 1st, then an infield single just fair down the 3rd base line by Keaschall, followed by a 2-run double into the gap in right center by Clemens for a 3-1 Minny lead.

Mark Leiter Jr. came in and got a foul out and pop out, but yielded an RBI double to Lewis and it was 4-1 Minnesota.

5. Devin, Doval, & Headrick Pitch Well

Some more good news for NY — Devin Williams pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 7th — fly out, fly out, strike out swinging.

Camilo Doval pitched a shutout 8th — allowing just a 2-out walk.

And Brent Headrick pitched a shutout 9th — getting the first 2 outs, then allowing an infield single, double, and intentional walk to Buxton to load the bases — before striking out Keaschall looking.

6. Topa Grounds Yanks Out

And 34-year-old Justin Topa shut the Yanks out in the 8th and 9th.

He got ground out, fly out, and strike out of Bellinger swinging in the 8th.

In the 9th, Giancarlo Stanton singled to lead off, but Topa got Ben Rice to hit into a double play, then got Jazz Chisholm Jr. to ground out for the old ballgame.
