Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit bookending 2-run HR’s — in the 2nd to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead and in the 8th for 2 important insurance runs — Trent Grisham hit bookending solo HR’s — in the 3rd and the 5th — and Carlos Rodon pitched a shutout into the 6th to carry the Yanks to a 7-2 win over the Red Sox on a beautiful Sunday night in the Bronx. A nationally televised game.
The Yankee bullpen of Luke Weaver, Devin Williams, and Camilo Doval did their job with 3 shutout innings of relief.
For Chisholm the 2 HR’s came after losing his best friend the day before. The tv cameras caught Jazz with tears in his eyes in the dugout after his 1st HR, with teammates congratulating and consoling him. His 2nd HR was not only huge insurance but also the 100th of his career.
“It felt kind of surreal. I lost my best friend yesterday,” said Chisholm afterwards. “Today felt like a different type of day, especially with the 100th home run coming today. I’ve been going through a lot in the last 30 hours.”
The Yanks salvaged the final game of the 4-game set and pull back to within .5 of the Red Sox and 5 of Toronto. NY is now 70-60; Boston is 71-60.
1. Jazz 2-Run HR Puts NY Up 2-0 in 2nd
Having won the first 3 games of the series — the last two with tremendous starting pitching courtesy Brayan Bello and Garrett Crochet — the Red Sox threw Dustin May, who was great in his last 2 starts with Boston (6 shutout innings, and 6 innings, 2 runs).
But May has had a career marked by injury and inconsistency — he was dreadful in his first start for Boston after they picked him up from the Dodgers at the trade deadline.
In this one the Yankee batters — especially the lefties — ripped away at him. May worked the first 2 batters of the game — Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge — in the bottom of the 1st, but got out of it with a double play and line out.
But in the 2nd, Giancarlo Stanton led off with a single and Jazz Chisholm Jr. upper cut a 372-foot BOMB to right center for a 2-0 Yankee lead. His 100th career HR.

2. Grisham Solo HR Makes It 3-0 in 3rd
Trent Grisham was next, leading off the 3rd with a 406-foot BOMB to right for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

3. Caballero Sac Fly Makes It 4-0 in 4th
Giancarlo Stanton led off the 4th with a double to center, Jazz Chisholm grounded out to move Stanton to 3rd, Ryan McMahon was hit by a pitch, and Jose Caballero — playing shortstop with Anthony Volpe given the night off — hit a sac fly to center for a 4-0 Yankee lead.
4. Grisham Bookending Solo HR Makes It 5-0
Trent Grisham led off the 5th with a 413-foot solo HR to right — bookending his solo HR earlier — to give NY a 5-0 lead.

May struck out Judge, walked Ben Rice and was gone — relieved by Brennan Bernardino. May’s line: 4.1 IP, 5 hits, 5 runs.
5. Rodon a Shutout Into 6th
Meanwhile, Carlos Rodon came into the big game needing to represent — and he did, shutting out Boston into the 6th like a co-Ace should.
He wasn’t perfect — but scattered hits and walks, and got 2 big double plays — in the 3rd and the 5th — to erase baserunners.
Rodon got in trouble in the 6th — issuing consecutive 1-out walks to Gonzales and Alex Bregman, and then a 2-out walk to Trevor Story to load the bases in a 5-0 game. Rodon was pissed at some of the calls he was getting from the home plate ump.

Luke Weaver relieved Rodon — and allowed a 2-out, 2-RBI single to Jonathan Lowe before striking out Jallen Duran to end the inning. NY 5 Boston 2.
6. Weaver a Shutout 7th
Weaver amended for the hit to some degree by pitching a shutout 7th — working around a 1-out single — and preserving the Yankee lead at 5-2.
7. Devin a Shutout 8th
More good news for the Yanks — Devin Williams came in and kicked ass in the 8th; groundout, strikeout of Roman Anthony swinging, and strikeout of Trevor Story swinging. A 1-2-3 inning, preserving the Yankee lead at 5-2.
8. Jazz Bookending 2-Run HR in 8th
And then Jazz Chisholm Jr. bookended his 2-run HR earlier by upper cutting a 2-run BOMB off Walker Buehler with Paul Goldschmidt (who had singled) aboard for a 7-2 Yankee lead in the bottom of the 8th.

9. Doval Finishes
Camilo Doval pitched the 9th — and it wasn’t perfect; in fact he had Yankee fans at home ready to push the panic button.
A leadoff single by Jonathan Lowe, a strikeout of Duran, but a double by Ceddanne Rafaela put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out in the 7-2 game. And Yankee fans at home were calculating when the tying run would come to the plate.
But Doval struck out Carlos Narvaez swinging and got Masataka Yoshida to ground out to Chisholm for the old ballgame.
