Holy Schlitt! Rookie Cam Schlittler Throws 100 MPH, K’s 7 in Win. NY 9 Seattle 6

Cam Schlittler K's Cal Raleigh with a 100-MPH fastball for his 1st strikeout in MLB.

HOLY SCHLITT WHO IS THIS GUY???!!

That was the question that exploded amongst Yankee fans watching Cam Schlittler make his major league debut, and hit 100 MPH twice in the 1st inning while striking out 2 — en route to 5.1 innings of 4-hit ball, striking out 7 and leaving with a 6-2 lead. He got the win as the Yankees beat Seattle 9-6 on a Wednesday night in the Bronx.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit 2 homers — a solo HR in the 3rd and 2-run HR in the 5th and the Yankees bookended that with 3-run rallies in the 1st inning and 6th inning on singles and doubles for the 9 runs. The Yankee offense banged out 13 hits, led by Chisholm, Jasson Dominguez who went 3-4, Austin Wells who went 2-4, and Cody Bellinger who went 2-4.

And Luke Weaver and Devin Williams both looked great in pitching shutout ball the last 2.2 innings.

But the buzz was about Schlittler, the 24-year-old, 6’6 righty who got the callup and start due to the injury to Clarke Schmidt. Schlittler pitched 5 games in AAA this year (2-1 3.80, 35 K’s in 21.1 IP) after being promoted from AA.

“I thought he was under control; you saw the live fastball,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Schlittler. “I thought he did a really good job with his secondary stuff, mixing that in, throwing it when he needed to for strikes, to be able to strike them out — whether it was curveball, cutter, slider. I thought they kind of got a good look at some of the breaking balls second time through, but you can see his stuff really plays. I thought his calm, poise, and focus was excellent.”

“From what we saw from Cam this Spring, he gotcha excited,” added Boone. “And then carried that into this season where he got off to a really good start in AA — obviously moved to AAA. I know the upside that exists with him. And I know how much he’s improved over the last 12 months. Just excited to see him go out and do his thing.”

NY improves to 51-41, and pull to within 2.5 of Toronto. Seattle drops to 48-44.

1. Schlittler WOWS ‘EM

Seattle’s J.P. Crawford hit Schlittler’s 91-MPH slider 344 feet into the short porch with 1 out in the 3rd to make it a 3-1 game, and Jorge Polanco got a 96-MPH fastball and put it 417 feet to center for a solo HR in the 4th to make it a 4-1 game.

Schlittler left to a standing ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd.

Cam’s family were in the stands root toot tooting him on.

“Probably had more jitters this morning, honestly, waking up,” said Schlittler afterwards. “Once I got to the field and got around everyone, I felt better about it. I know my dad gets more nervous than I do when I’m out there throwing,”

“It’s a dream come true,” added Schlittler.

Austin Wells led off the inning with a ground-rule double, and Oswald Peraza reached on a 1-out line drive to center that centerfielder Julio Rodriguez dropped when he sort of nonchalanted the catch

Jasson Dominguez singled to right and it was a 7-4 game.

“I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to score that RBI for Judgie’,” said The Martian afterwards about his dash around the bases.

But Jonathan Loaisiga coughed up Another 2-run HR ball in the 7th — this one to 2nd baseman Cole Young after Ben Williamson had hit a 1-out double — and the NY lead was narrowed to 9-6.

7. Weaver Confident & Great

Luke Weaver relieved Loaisiga with 1 out in the 7th, and struck out J.P. Crawford and got Julio Rodriguez to fly out.

Weaver looked like the confident Luke Weaver before the hamstring injury and poor results after he came back. He pitched a shutout 8th — hitting Arozarena with a pitch with 1 out, but striking out Polanco and Luke Raley swinging to end the inning.

8. Devon Great

And Devon Williams came in for the 9th, NY up 9-6, and was awesome — strike out swinging, fly out, strike out swinging for the old ballgame.

Etcetera

Before the game, the Yankees announced they had Designated for Assignment (DFA’d) DJ LeMahieu. He was still owed $22 Million for the last 1.5 years of his contract. According to Bryan Hoch, “Aaron Boone said DJ LeMahieu was willing to begin working at 3B again, but the position had been too physically demanding for him. There were lengthy discussions yesterday and today between LeMahieu, Boone and Brian Cashman. LeMahieu didn’t ask for his release and is not happy.”

Ironically, DJ LeMahieu was not doing too badly this year — slashing 2-12-.266 (.338) in 128 at bats. It was his highest batting average in 5 years. He is 36 years old.
